Annabeth sat with her back against a tree trunk, a cricket chirping somewhere off in the dark woods behind her. Well, at least it wasn’t some sort of monster. But that was what she was here for. She had patrol duty for… she glanced at her watch… another hour and a half. Nothing so far. Which wasn’t really bad news. She glanced at the two darker shapes just in front of her: Percy and Nick, both fast asleep. From all the talk they had on the train, they were all going to need every ounce of strength they could muster. She sighed and thought about what Luke had told her in her dream. Old and evil forces… and now this talk about Phobos. And what Sami had said about a ‘threat within’. It was all a little too creepy. What if Percy had actually been right about the Great Prophecy from two years ago? Could it actually be coming true already? Scary thought.
She drew her dagger instead and started occupying herself by sketching some building plans in the dirt and running the load calculations for different materials for them, even though it was hard to see it in only the speckled moonlight. She had swapped out this dagger - her original dagger - for the replica one she had carried for two years nearly immediately after the other two had fallen asleep. It felt odd to use it again, remembering the last time it had been wielded - two years ago in the Mount Olympus throne room. But after that hurt look Luke had gotten in her dream when he noticed she wasn’t using it anymore she’d decided it was time to take it back up.
Something stirring a ways off caught her attention and she looked up… Silence. Annabeth stayed still and watched the darkness through narrowed eyes for several minutes, but nothing followed. Finally, she returned to her calculations.

in the D A R K i hear a call C A L L I N G me there* * * * *i will go T H E R E and B A C K again The dream started off simple enough. Percy was standing with Annabeth on the pier back at camp. They weren’t saying anything to each other just staring into the others eyes. It was the perfect day. Slowly they leaned in to kiss when Annabeth whispered, Luke Even in his dream Percy knew that wasn’t right. He blinked and stopped, Annabeth still leaning in for a kiss. Then suddenly the entire setting changed.
Percy felt like he was free falling and the next thing he knew he was standing off shore in the middle of some body of water. The waves were large and the wind unforgiving. There was an island up a head and a faint beam of light. The setting changed once more. Percy now stood in a wooded area he could see water just opposite of the tree line though. A campfire served as the light.
At first Percy though he had woken up but he recognized one of the two people at the campfire as Phobos. He recalled what he looked like during their meeting him a few years back and was certain this was the same God. His eyes narrowed, but Percy was unable to move from his spot behind the cluster of trees. There was a boy about his age with sandy hair and a familiar smile and blue eyes. Percy had never seen him before directly but was certain he looked similar to someone else.
“You’re not getting cold feet now are you?” Phobos spoke, the voice sent a shiver down Percy’s spin. “No!” The boy snapped staring into the fire. “Good. Because I reward those who do their job right.” The boy tossed a stick into the fire. “I don’t see how this will help her though.” Phobos gave a crooked smile and hovered over the boy’s shoulder like some twisted conscious. “I told you, Olympus doesn’t care about their children. Your father is the same. He will turn your sister against you. He never cared about you or her. He left you to fend for yourself. Besides, she betrayed you didn’t she.”
The boy’s faced hardened and his fist clenched together around another stick. Percy saw a drop or two of blood trickle down from the boy’s hand. He swallowed. Phobos was trying to turn demi-gods against their parents. Percy wanted to run over and shove Phobos’ face directly into the fire. Even if it didn’t hurt Phobos it sure would make Percy feel a whole hell of a lot better.
“She’s still my sister. I don’t want anything bad to happen to her.” His eyes glistened over with tears in the firelight. “Swear to me Phobos that will be safe.”
“I have already promised you that. You are doing a great service for the war, for the downfall of Olympus you be regarded as a hero in the Underworld. You’re a smart and brave boy Riley.” Phobos smirked and clapped him on the back. “A soul for a soul, even Hades can’t resist—“ He stopped and his head jerked up.
Percy knew what had happened. His presence was no longer unnoticed. Phobos looked directly at him from across the fire and a cruel grin poppe dup on his face. He lifted his shades and even from the distance and fire light, Percy would see the God of Fear’s eyes burn ruby red.
“I see you Perseus Jackson.”
Percy woke with a start. He felt his face damp with sweat and his heart raced inside of his chest. He sat up taking a few deep breathes of a cool Michigan night air to calm him down. He looked over and saw Nick still asleep, the big lug. And then there was Annabeth who was wide-awake and on watch playing in the dirt with her dagger. Percy sighed and tried to pass off his night scare but knew it couldn’t go unnoticed or forgotten. He had seen right into Phobos’s plans, and what was worse Phobos knew he was there. He knew they were coming now. So much for the element of surprise. And who in the name of Hades was Riley? Percy had never seen him at camp before nor had he heard of the kid’s name being used.
He wiped the sweat from his brow and moved over to Annabeth, hopefully she was too preoccupied to notice how upset he was. Doubtful. He moved in close to her and kissed her on the forehead. “Hey.” he said foolishly. “Anything dangerous out there? What are you drawing?” He asked suddenly distracted by the faint pictures in the dirt.

Annabeth looked up sharply when she caught the slightest movement. Percy had sat up. She could tell it was definitely Percy, as Nick towered over the other two of them; that and after knowing him as long as she had, she’d sort of memorized his silhouette. It was hard to make out his expression from the distance, save the small spot where the moonlight that had made it through tree cover gleamed on his face. Wait… gleamed? That likely wasn’t a good sign. “Percy?”
Her worry momentarily vanished, though, when he moved over next to her and kissed her forehead. She smiled. “Hey, Seaweed Brain. No, haven’t seen anything so far. Unless crickets are considered dangerous.” Then again, she’d nearly had a panic attack when a spider crawled onto her knee, but had managed to keep from screaming. Her tongue had stopped bleeding eventually. She’d changed spots pretty fast after that event. But Percy didn’t need to know about that.
She leaned over and kissed his cheek. “Just some building plans. Passing the time.” She said with a smile, figuring she’d leave it at that. No sense putting him right back to sleep, right? Her smile dropped slightly though and her tone became serious. “What’s the matter? Another dream?”

in the D A R K i hear a call C A L L I N G me there* * * * *i will go T H E R E and B A C K again Percy couldn’t help but snigger at Annabeth’s comment toward crickets. He moved in closer to her with a grin on his face. Settling in beside her he glanced over to Nick’s sleeping form. “We have Nick incase the cricket situation gets out of hand. No worries there.” He loved the nickname Annabeth had for him. Sure he hated it at first but coming from her it was alright. It made him forget about the nasty dream only moments before, at least for a few seconds.
As Annabeth kissed his cheek Percy felt his face grow hot. He still got butterflies every time Annabeth kissed him. Blinking he glanced back down at the dirt artwork. Leave it to Annabeth to draw up plans to buildings while keeping an eye out for monsters or fear gods. Percy was certain there were only three things on Annabeth’s mind, architecture, Percy (naturally. At least, he hoped he was always on her mind), and the on going plot of how to get rid of spiders world wide.
The smile fell from Percy’s face just about the same time as Annabeth’s did. He swallowed knowing he would have to tell her. Though he didn’t know if waking Nick would be necessary, it was nice to have a little alone time with Annabeth. Percy cleared his throat and tried to keep the worry from his face.
“Yeah. And I think I know Phobos’ plan, or part of it.” He proceeded to tell Annabeth about his dream, leaving out the part about the beginning where she whispered Luke’s name as they went to kiss. He stopped for a moment when he reached the part about Phobos and the kid. He chewed his bottom lip working on recalling everything he could, trying to remember what they had said word for word.
“The boy’s name was Riley and Phobos talked about a soul for a soul. Like what Nico tried to do for Bianca way back when.” He sighed troubled. “Phobos wants the downfall of Olympus. I knew the guy was mental, but holy Hades I didn’t think he was Kronos cuckoo for Coco Puffs.” Percy reached over and took Annabeth’s hand. “I think we’re in for more than we bargained for. I think we’re on the wrong end of the start of the next Great Prophecy. Should we wake the big guy and tell him?” He nodded toward Nick. As much as Percy didn’t want to wake him he thought he’d at least suggest it. Hopefully Annabeth would be all ‘oh no Percy, let’s just keep this between the two of us!’ followed by a short, or moderately long make out session.

Annabeth grinned at Percy’s mention of their greatest anti-cricket defense. “Yeah, those crickets won’t even know what hit them.” When he moved closer, she instinctively scooted right up practically against his side, finding the comfort she always found just by being near him. That effect seemed less… well, effective when she asked him what was wrong. Watching the usual old cheery, happy expression melt off his face almost made her wish she hadn’t said anything. Except that it seemed way too important to leave it unsaid. And she was right.
She listened silently as he described his dream. It didn’t sound encouraging. She only realized she’d been staring at the ground when he took her hand. Setting her dagger aside and putting her other hand of his, she looked up at him, though any effort to smile was voided by his words. Yeah, it really was starting to look more and more like the next Great Prophecy could be upon them. Especially given the new news about Phobos. Downfall of Olympus? Lovely, she thought sarcastically. Because two years ago wasn’t nearly enough.
The prophecy Rachel had told at school that Sami had spoken of came back to floating back like a recording was playing in her head. Shrouded in darkness they will forsake. Doubt of fear is the greatest mistake. He will come and seek to win. Beware the one who hides within. She shivered. That was definitely high on the creepy list… Annabeth took a deep breath. “I admit I need to tell you about something as well… Before we left, I sort of haphazardly met Sami, one of the other campers, in the forest. She goes to Rachel’s school…” She went on to tell Percy about what Sami had told her about the prophecy Rachel had given in class. “I’m starting to think you might be right about all of this. As much as I hate to say it.”
Annabeth paused at Percy’s question and looked over to where Nick was sleeping. Nick did need to know… but it seemed so… horrible to destroy the opportunity to be here with just Percy, at least for now. She looked back to Percy with a slight smile. “We can tell him in the morning. He… needs his rest.” With that, she took her hand off his and wrapped it around him instead, pulling him close and briefly leaving a kiss on his lips. “We’ll sort this all out. Don’t worry,” she said quietly.

in the D A R K i hear a call C A L L I N G me there* * * * *i will go T H E R E and B A C K again Feeling Annabeth shiver Percy looked over and pulled her closer rubbing his hand on her arm trying to warm her. He realized after this action that she was probably just reacting to what he had unloaded on her. To be honest the dream made him shiver too. He hadn’t had dreams like this since Kronos and that was never a good sign. At the idea of Kronos Percy went back to thinking about Annabeth whispering Luke’s name in his dream. Percy turned his head away and rolled his eyes, he was being foolish. It was just a freaking dream. It didn’t mean anything, it couldn’t.
He swallowed his brow furrowing slightly as Annabeth revealed her news about Rachel and some camper named Sami. Percy hadn’t recalled any Sami, she must have been new and he had yet to get a chance to meet her. He chewed on his lower lip processing everything Annabeth told him about the prophecy-warning thing Rachel had cited. It wasn’t the Pythagorean theorem, it was worse.
He ran his hand through his dark messy hair. “Well that doesn’t sound pleasant. If we didn’t have enough things to worry about. I’m going to have a talk with Rachel and see if she can’t predict a nice prophecy for once. You know one that deals with me winning the lottery, or marrying a hot super model.” He paused for a second realizing what he said. Percy’s eyes grew to the size of walnuts. He turned his head slowly to Annabeth and gave a weak grin. “I mean, Grover. Grover getting to marry a hot super model.” Percy hugged Annabeth and held her for a handful of long moments hoping it would take her mind off the dumb idiotic thing that slipped from his mouth. He pushed back and decided to change the subject. “Why are we always the ones to save everyone butts?”
Percy couldn’t be happier to hear Annabeth’s response. Waiting until the morning to tell Nick about having to fight a God and stop him from brining Olympus down was a good idea. That was a lot of information to try and take in in the middle of the night. He smiled at Annabeth dreamily as she kissed him again. Her kiss still had that affect on him. Percy hoped it never wore off. “I know we will. I trust you fully. After all you are Wise Girl.” He smirked smugly and kissed her on the head.

Annabeth smiled when Percy tried to warm her up. He really was sweet. Sure, she was only maybe a little cold, but it was still a nice gesture either way. And one of the reasons she really hated having to break it all by telling him about Rachel’s prophecy… stupid prophecy. She watched his reaction carefully, worry written all over her face. He was right: it did just seem like another ton of weight on all of their shoulders, and there was enough there already! Problem was, Percy didn’t exactly stop there…
She pulled away, glaring at him. Sure, him winning the lottery she could deal with. It would likely inflate his ego even more, but not anything she hadn’t handled before. “Marry a supermodel, huh? So I’m just a placeholder? Good to know.” She felt her anger rising. Well, if he’d wanted miss perfect, maybe he should have stayed with Calypso! Useless little freak on her stupid little island. And just Annabeth’s luck, she wasn’t there anymore. Wonderful.
Percy seemed to finally catch himself… and managed not to fix it at all. Annabeth crossed her arms. “Yeah, I’m sure Juniper would love that idea. Nice going, Seaweed Brain. Seriously?” Then he had the audacity to try and hug it away? Goodness sake, he was desperate. And the not-so-unexpected change of topic. Alright, she might as well roll with it. “Just lucky, I guess.” Well, bumbling idiot or not, she still couldn’t help but love him. And want to spend all the time she could with him. “Thanks, Percy. I trust you with my life. You’ll always be my Seaweed Brain,” she said with a smile. She was a little disappointed, though, when he only kissed her on the head. Well, better than nothing, right? She moved back to where she’d been sitting right next to him before his less-than-intelligent comment and wrapped her arms around him, resting her head on his shoulders. “I love you, Percy.”

Percy figured Annabeth would take what he said wrong. Of course Percy didn’t mean what came out of his dumb seaweed brain mouth. He took Annabeth’s hand and squeezed it. He ran his other hand through her hair and tried to laugh the situation off.
“I didn’t mean it like that. And I totally forgot about Juniper, which doesn’t help the subject. But listen, it was just something that slipped out. I didn’t mean it. You are the only one.” He assured her. Inside of Percy there was a slightest nagging doubt. His dream had disturbed him, but whether Percy was more disturbed about Phobos or Annabeth saying Luke’s name and not his, he couldn’t say.
He returned the smile, Percy was glad that Annabeth trusted him with her life. It went without saying that he fully trusted her with his own. But if anything were to happen to her, he would never forgive himself. As Annabeth rested her head on his shoulder he laid his gently on hers. With a sigh Percy said, “I love you too.”
Annabeth couldn’t see it but the smirk on Percy’s face faded as he thought about the dream. More focused on the Annabeth and Luke part than anything. He was putting to much thought into it. Annabeth had already told Luke she didn’t love him. Besides, no offense to the guy, but he was dead. There was no way for him to come back. end . . .
