Annabeth woke early and found herself with nothing to do for a good half hour, plus having to be quiet about doing said nothing. So she gathered the bag she’d packed for the mission, along with her dagger and Yankees hat, and went to sit out on the edge of the dew-covered fountain in the middle of the courtyard. The sun was just barely starting to rise, but it was enough light that she could sit and study a map she’d found of the northeast US. They had a long way to go just to get to Lake Superior, and then searching the lake… oh boy.
She glanced at her wristwatch. Seven fifty-eight. Well, two minutes until people were supposed to get up anyway. Close enough. She folded the map up and tucked it carefully into her backpack, then set off for the corner at the top of the U of cabins made by cabins one and three. Climbing the stairs to the front of the Poseidon cabin, she knocked a couple times on the door. Percy’s half-sister probably wouldn’t be pleased about the wake-up call (she didn’t seem the type to be pleased about much of anything from the once or twice that Annabeth had seen her), but the quest was a bit more important that her Gabrielle’s crankiness.

Percy had been up for a while unable to sleep. How does one sleep before leaving on a quest? He never learned. Percy had simply been content lying in bed staring at the ceiling. Gabrielle had been a sleep for hours, had she not been here Percy would have been pacing back and forth. On the flat of his back Percy drummed his fingers on his chest impatient for the sun to rise already. His mind was swimming with various scenarios of how wrong this quest could go. He closed his eyes.
There was a bright light that caused Percy to cover his eyes which was weird cause he thought he had already closed them. When the light died down Percy saw a tall tower like building. It was a lighthouse. It sat off in the distance across the water. It was night, probably early morning, and the water was still. The scene quickly changed as the light came back around to Percy. When he blinked he was closer to the lighthouse. There was some writing on a sign that stood next to it but his dyslexia made it hard to figure out. He read a word that looked like Royal, and the scene changed again. A teenaged boy with dark hair, a leather jacket, and sunglasses stood at the base of the lighthouse. Just as the boy looked in Percy’s direction Percy’s eyes flew open.
The sun was shining into the cabin. Percy must have fallen a sleep even if it was for a short amount of time. He climbed out of bed and grabbed his book bag, which had been packed the night before. He rummaged through it making sure everything was in place. He thought on the dream for a few minutes. Had that been Phobos? and what was the deal with the lighthouse? As he patted his jacket pocket for Riptide there was a knock on the cabin door. He glanced over his shoulder to Gabrielle. Percy slid one of the straps of the backpack on his shoulder and quickly shoved his feet into his shoes. He gave one more look around the cabin before he moved out the door squeezing past Annabeth.
He looked Annabeth in the eyes for a moment. There was a sad almost mournful smile on his face. He debated about telling her about the dream now or waiting until later. Percy leaned in and kissed her on the cheek and took her hand. He would wait just a little while longer. It was probably nothing anyway. “Let’s go get Sparky and we can get out of here.” He gave her the best and biggest encouraging smile he could manage. It was difficult to do.

Today was the day, they where going to start a quest that seemed simple enough but Nick had a bad feeling that when they came back, a lot of things would be different. When it reached the time for them to be heading out, he had already been up for hours using a target he taped to his wall as a practice for both his lightning and daggers. He wanted to be on the top of his game, because only the gods knew what could be waiting for them at that lake.
When his watch went off Nick grabbed his leather jacket and his backpack, yea it was warm out but it was his lucky jacket and it never hurt to be prepared. He put on his jacket before he slung his bag over one shoulder, running his hand over his left wrist to make sure that his lightning bolt pendent was still on the front of its leather strap. He could never go anywhere without his sword..
Once he knew that he had everything he walked out of his cabin and just sat down on the steps and waited for Annabeth and Percy. It wasn't to long before he saw them coming out of cabin 3, when they got close he stood up and walked the rest of the way to meet them." Hey guys, ready to rock and roll?" He asked with a small smile.

Annabeth could tell something was wrong from the moment Percy opened the door. First off, she’d known him for, what, six years now? And second, he was rubbish at hiding stuff. Maybe it was just nerves. It had been a bit since either of them had gone anywhere on a quest. But all she managed to get out was “Morning, Percy” before he unexpectedly froze her train of thoughts for an instant and took advantage of her pause by cutting in. Not to mention even going for one of his painfully fake big, brave hero faces; she had to give him credit for trying. It didn’t mean she was going to let this drop, though, of course.
That was about when Nick’s voice came from the general direction of Cabin One. She’d just have to ask Percy what was going on a bit later. She turned to Nick. “Ready as ever. Shall we?” Better now than later after all. Hardly waiting for a reply, she started off, leading the way to the Big House as the camp started to show signs of morning activity around them.

Percy adjusted his backpack and shared a look with Annabeth before Nick joined the two of them. He forced another grin at Nick and gave a nod. He admired his enthusiasm. Percy let go of Annabeth’s hand and began to walk. He didn’t get too far before he stopped and turned back to them.
“I know we should have thought about this before but uhh, how exactly do we plan to get to Lake Superior? I’m assuming Nick could jump start a car for us once get outside the Property Line.” Percy sighed; they didn’t exactly plan things down to a T. The details weren’t refined but Percy knew the three of them would be able to come up with something. Another thought suddenly popped into his head. Once they got to the Lake how in the name of Hades were they going to search or cross the waters? They would have to borrow a boat as well. He wouldn’t try to express that idea until they came to it, besides it was Annabeth’s quest and Percy knew she would want him to try and take the sidecar or even the back seat if he could manage that.

Nick nodded to them both as they came up to him, knowing they looked as excited as he really felt. Or well more, nervous. He didn’t bother to try and answer when Annabeth asked if they should go, instead he just fallowed the other two. Though he stopped when Percy spoke up, truth was that he was right. They had gone over a lot about the quest but they hadn’t really covered transportation.” Yeah, I could.” He said gently when Percy suggested him hotwiring a car. He had learned it on the road the few months before he had reached camp half blood.
Just this was Annabeths quest, so he looked down at his friend while pulling on the strap of his backpack a bit.” What do you think? “ He asked, though he would be surprised if she liked the hotwiring idea with how often she was one of the ones enforcing the rules around camp. Though while waiting for her to respond he did think about the stables, flying horses? But he kept that idea to himself for now so they could both see what the leader had up her sleeve.

Annabeth stopped and turned. “Actually, I’ve been thinking about that.” She pulled her backpack off her shoulders and pulled out the map she’d been studying. She continued speaking as she opened it so they could both see as well. “Argus can take us as far as Manhattan. Then past that I’m bringing the money I saved from my part time job over the school year and we can use that for fare for bus or train or something. I know it won’t be enough for the whole way, but it will be a start. Unfortunately… that’s all I’ve thought of so far. So, as much as I hate to say it, it may come to that. Last resort though.” She flicked the map so it held itself fairly flat and pointed along the route as she named it off. “The fastest route would probably be through Sunbury in Pennsylvania, to Akron, then skirt southern Cleveland, over to Toledo, Detroit, Flint, Bay City, Mackinaw City, and end up at Lake Superior at Sault Ste. Marie. From there…well, we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.”((The map I was looking at for that route: www.welt-atlas.de/datenbank/karten/karte-0-9013.gif))

Percy stared at the map and followed the road planned by Annabeth. It was a clear path and would be the best way of getting to Lake Superior without flying. If there was ever a time for Zeus to forgive him for all the things he did in the past, now would be a great time. Percy wondered what his chances would be if he flew with a son of Zeus. The chances of getting zapped out of the sky might be less, but he wasn’t going to chance it. He nodded to Annabeth and looked over to Nick.
“Money isn’t going to get us far, I have a little we can use but we’re going to need some for food too, and a place to stay for a night.” He studied the map over Annabeth’s shoulder his hands gently touching her waste.
“When we get there I can get us across the water some how. The big problem is figuring out what we are going to be up against. Oh yeah, let’s hope no one is out to stop us when we are on our way.” He looked to Annabeth and gave her an innocent look. “Just thinking out loud. Sorry.”

When Annabeth said that she had already been thinking about their transportation and route he smiled. He really should have seen that coming. As she pulled out the map he stood behind both her and Percy, easily being able to see over both their heads to look at the map." Sounds like a plan to me." He said after she went through her plan, it all seemed logical enough. Just when Percy spoke up Nick nodded and reached into his back pack, pulling out a wad of money which was about 150 bucks." Will this help? I kind of got it off a guy when I reached New york...I never had a chance to use it though."
He had been saving it for over two years just in case, but also he had never really a chance to learn about American currency, he new more about drachmas and Russian money. So he wasn't exactly sure how much good he would be able to help with his money. Just Percy mentioning having no idea what they where up against, he had to admit he shared his concerns but would could they really do?" Well then I guess its a good thing we are a team of a couple of sons of the big three as the fire power, and Annabeth calling the shots so we dont do anything stupid." Leave it to Nick to crack a joke under pressure, but it was really how he dealt with things.

Annabeth tried to ignore the feeling of Percy’s hands resting lightly on her waist, which wasn’t the easiest thing to do, but his words, and the dismal reality of them, made it a bit easier. “Yeah, I know. Unless you have a better idea for the way there. Seriously, I’m open to any suggestions. Just not spiders.” At the very thought of spiders, she shivered slightly, moving a bit closer to Percy. “Let’s assume we’re going to be facing every monster out there and it’s mom. And possibly other enemies as well,” she added, though left it at that.
Then when Nick spoke up she stopped short and looked at him with wide eyes. Where on earth did he get that much money!? Got it off a guy when he reached New York. Maybe better just not to ask. “Yeah, that should definitely help.” She started the tedious job of folding the map and pulled her bag back off her shoulder to put it away. As she reached in, her hand brushed against a long piece of metal, though, and she paused, her mind going off for a second.
It was her dagger. Not the one strapped to her waist. Her original dagger, that Luke had given her. In a dream just last night she had spoken to Luke. He said he’d gotten out of the Underworld and had, apparently, made it as far as Connecticut. She remembered everything from the conversation, but his expression when he noticed she didn’t have the same dagger he’d given her when she was seven... that wasn't something easily forgotten. It was for that reason she’d decided to take it out of her trunk and bring it along. She still wasn’t a fan of using it though, after what it had done…
Nick’s joke brought her back to what was going on. She smiled half-heartedly, closing up her bag and putting it back on her shoulder. “Hopefully it works out that easily.” Just because she was pretty much known as a know-it-all, didn’t mean she couldn’t join in the joking around too, right?

Percy took his hands off Annabeth’s waist and stood back. He let out a heavy sigh and shook his head. He couldn’t think of much in the way of suggestions, plus the underlining tone in Annabeth’s voice made Percy keep his mouth shut. When she moved closer his arms instinctively wrapped around her.
“Well, I’m here and so is Nick.” He added glancing up to him. Percy leaned down to Annabeth and whispered in her ear. “Invincible. I’ll never let them hurt you.” He wanted to continue on with being close to Annabeth but he suddenly became aware of Nick’s presence again. His arms unwrapped themselves and folded across his chest. He gave a nervous smile to Nick. Awkward.
His eyes widened at the sight of money in Nick’s hand. He whistled, “I second what Annabeth said. I suppose we don’t need to worry about money as much.” Percy still knew the money combined probably wouldn’t take them all the way but it would get them damn close. Not to mention they had to find a way to get back. One thing at a time Percy.
Percy noticed the quick change in Annabeth’s expression no matter how subtle it was as she rummaged through her backpack. He was going to question her about it but Nick spoke up again. Percy glanced over in his direction and gave a snort. He wasn’t sure if Nick was trying to say Percy wasn’t the greatest when it came to making smart decisions. After giving it thought for a few seconds Percy came to the conclusion that he was over thinking the matter. He smiled at Nick and adjusted his backpack, “Can’t argue with you there. So, should we head out then?”

Nick nodded a little as Annabeth told them to just be prepared, that was all they could do right? Though at the closeness of the other two he couldn’t help but rub the back of his neck awkwardly and look at the grass, so he didn’t really feel like his was intruding. Though when they started talking about money he showed them both what he had, and he actually did feel good about it because by the look on their faces it would be able to help them a lot.” Well Im glad it will be some help..” He said before putting the money away and looked back at the other two, thankful that Percy had gotten away from Annabeth. Just because he had been starting to feel like a third wheel, and it had also gotten him thinking about Annabeth’s sister Gail. Who the Son of Zeus had developed a crush on…Not that he would admit that to anyone.
When Annabeth started looking through her bag, Nick also noticed the change in her expression like something was on her mind. Just he didn’t mention it, he guessed that if she wanted to share it with either of them she would. He nodded a little, returning Percy’s smile.” Yeah I guess we should head out.” He said as he started heading towards his sisters tree, guessing that Argus was waiting for them at the bottom of the hill to take them to Manhattan.

Annabeth smiled slightly as Percy embraced her, his words reassuring. That is, until she too remembered Nick was right there. Percy seemed to notice too as he quickly let her go. She shuffled her feet, no doubt blushing like mad, and cleared her throat. She’d definitely have to watch it on that one. Poor Nick; she didn’t mean to leave him out or anything, or go all mushy in front of him. She’d have to talk with him later, apologize. “Right… yeah, we should get moving.” She was sort of glad when Nick took the lead, despite her earlier eagerness to lead this.
Following after him, she did her best to keep the subject firmly on the quest. “So I suppose the question now is what type of transport. We can go for bus, or there’s probably a train. Taxi would be far too expensive. What do you guys think?” She made a point to look at Nick when asking the question, with only a glance at Percy. Hopefully that would help with the actually feeling like a team thing, though she hoped Percy didn’t mind she was paying Nick more attention. Gods, this was not easy.

It still felt weird that Grover wasn’t going to be on this quest but Percy would get over it. He nodded to Nick and Annabeth and followed after them. He stay to Annabeth’s left locking his fingers gently around her hand. When Annabeth glanced in his direction Percy knew it was alright to answer. He kept reminding himself to stay on the back burner for this quest. It’s Annabeth’s, don’t try to be the hero. [/color] He thought. Then again it was never that Percy tried to be the hero, it just sort of happened. It was in his nature to jump into trouble and come out victorious, or be willing to die trying. His brow furrowed, “Well we all know how the bus went for us that one time. A train may give us a little more privacy. That way we can discuss our plan of action more. We could transfer from Train to bus or some other means of transportation later on.”[/blockquote]

Nick was glad when Percy and Annabeth toned down the boyfriend/girlfriend thing a bit. Not that he didn’t think they where good together, he just sort of felt like a third wheel when they where like that. Though he started feeling better when Annabeth looked at him as she asked what they would do for transport. Though Percy answered before he did, the son of Zeus nodded gently." I actually agree with Percy, as long as we can get a big enough compartment to ourselves." He said as he looked at the other two, he had been on trains before and a lot of the time the space was very cramped even when the passengers weren't 6'4 and riding with two others.
Then again with the reaction he had gotten when he had showed them the money, he hoped that they could spring for a compartment. Though he also wasn't against stealing what they needed.." I think we should take the train as far as we can, and then look for other transportation by what we find when we stop." He said as they all walked down the hill. He listened to see if either disagreed, looking at them out of the corner of his eye.
