When he felt her brush his cheek he cursed mentally in Greek, knowing he had let a few tears escape probably. He hated looking weak in front of her, always had. Mostly because growing up he knew that she had looked up to him and if he had looked weak or scared it would have probably made things worse for her. He was so used to being strong for the both of them, and not just because of male pride. But as he looked at her out of the corner of his eye he remembered that he didn’t have to be all the strength anymore..Its just whenever he thought of how he had almost been the cause of her death, and the look in her eyes when he had told her to try not to die. It had just tore him up inside, but all he could do was be thankful that Jackson and his crew had come in time to save her. That would be something he would owe him for till the end of his existence, no matter how much even thinking about the guy annoyed him.

“Its alright Annabeth, don’t worry about it..” He said softly as she said his name, and he looked ahead of him for a few moments so it might be harder for her to read his face as she told him that he was right about thinking that he had broke her faith in him back on the mountain. Just when she said how she had really cared about him, he had cared about her too. More then she probably realized.” I did what I did, because acting like you didn’t mean a thing to me gave you more chance to survive. Kronos had already been suspecting my weak spots and I didn’t want him to use you like that, he would of probably killed you just to try and break me.” And it would of worked..He added in the back of his mind. Just when she said that she knew he had to he nodded a little, though it didn’t make him feel to much better.” I still hate that I made you think that, I cared about you a lot and when you turned me away I felt like I had lost everything that made me human.” It was true, he had already bathed in the Styxs by then and the one thing he had pictured to keep himself tied to humanity, was her.

“ Its in the past, aren’t you the one that has been telling me for the last hour that what is in the past is in the past?” He said trying to tease her, even though he knew how hard it was to let go of past guilt. Especially when you where as stubborn as she was. He rested his head ontop of hers for a moment because even if she had grown, he was still taller and whispered.” It wasn’t your fault Anna..” He said knowing that she was still blaming herself for what happened to him.” You didn’t realize how much trouble I really was in..and after what I did I wouldn’t blame you if you hadn’t cared.” He said but she had cared hadn’t she? He had just pushed her away to many times and lost her.

When something rustled in the trees, the son of Hermes head turned in the direction of the noise trying to find out what it was. However he didn’t think on what it could be very long, because Annabeth had jumped and was now latching onto him for dear life. Though it didn’t really feel like it was because she was scared, he couldn’t really put his finger on what it was.” Hey, its okay. Your not really exactly here. Anything attacks, you will probably just wake up back in your cabin.” And he was glad of that fact, he didn’t really know how he could fight with her, and protect her as a ghost. Though when the shadow flew over head and let out a loud ‘Whooo’ he couldn’t help but laugh a little.” Annabeth Chase spooked by an Owl, what a first.” He said teasingly, he always used to love to tease her. Mostly because at the end of the day no matter how much they teased each other they had always the same Luke and Annabeth. Part of him was starting to believe that would never really go away, even if he never saw her again.” Scared your mom is checking up on you?”

Despite how much she wanted to stop him, Annabeth let him go on explaining everything that had happened on Mount Tam. She knew he had probably done it for good reason - at least, she did now, not so much then - but she didn’t know it had been that bad. It only made her opinion of Kronos, if possible, even worse. And when he mentioned her turning him away had taken away everything that made him feel human even, it made her opinion of herself worse too. Wow, warm fuzzy feelings all around. She nodded slightly just to appease him to hopefully think she was able to let it drop that easy; sure, the past was past, but it didn’t feel pleasant either way.

When he rested his head on hers, though, she managed a small smile. “Thanks, Lu-” Then he just had to open his big mouth. She pulled away from him sharply and glared. “Luke Castellan, how can you even suggest that!? Of course I cared what would happen to you. I care about you a lot more than you even know, mister. I can’t even tell you how guilty I felt after that. You died because I couldn’t bring myself to believe you! You think that’s a good feeling? I hated myself so much. So of course I cared! And don’t you ever think otherwise!” Any other argument was cut off by the owl’s sudden appearance.

Instead of being frustrated and guilty, Annabeth was left embarrassed like crazy, her face likely a good couple shades redder than normal. Though that changed quickly as some of the color drained at Luke’s words. “What? No! I don’t want to go back to my cabin! I finally get to see you again and then have to go back?” Without thinking about it, she hugged him close, a little less panic-protective this time, and muttered, “Nothing better attack then…” The last time she’d seen him, on Mount Olympus, he’d just gotten himself back from Kronos’ grasp and she finally had him back in her life the way it was supposed to be. Just in time for him to be stolen to the dark, unforgiving Underworld. It seemed so unfair. And now that she got to at least see him again, there was the ever-present threat that the dream would end any second and she’d lose him again. It was cruel really.

She smiled when he teased her. Finally, something happy. “The world is full of firsts, I guess.” If only she could come up with a good come-back. That had always been a challenge, trying to get him at these little teasing wars. He usually won. So she went with her old faithful last resort… and stuck her tongue out at him. “Sometimes I wonder if she is. Not scared though. No reason to be.” She leaned against him, trying to think of something to change the topic to. She knew Luke didn’t really get along too great with his dad, so family stuff might not be the best thing to talk about. “So… where will you go? Now that you’re sort of on the run and all?”

Her question was left unanswered, though.

Annabeth opened her eyes to the old familiar war map stuck to the ceiling above her bunk in Cabin 6. The playground was gone. Luke was gone... And she hadn't even gotten to say goodbye.
