It’s been a few weeks since they’ve returned from Adonia’s quest and everything in the world seemed different, she’s never had that big of an adventure, or been so scared. But today had to make matters even worse, today was the day that her old flame died in a car accident, it happened last year and it was still fresh in her mind. As she walked down towards the cold waves on the sand, she tried not to think about it, but the memories always crept up like a thief in the night. She felt like the stars were mocking her, they twinkled and danced on the waves of the sea, and the moon casting a silver glow everywhere. It was a gorgeous night to be out and about, she loved how the silver light made her eyes look like the moon itself, so bright and welcoming. She got to the edge of the water and put her bare foot into the clear water, instantly she felt the chill of the water crawl up from her toes to the tip of her head, it was something she liked to feel when she was sad, the coldness of the ocean. It was always her escape back home, she lived on the edge of the ocean, where her back yard met with the sand of the beach. Cyrene then submerged her other foot in and walked out to her knees in the freezing water, she lifted up her lavender dress so it wouldn’t get wet. The demi-god closed her eyes and let her mind wonder, she could feel the spray of the waves splash on her arms and face, she felt home.
Cyrene walked back out and sat on the sand where it wasn’t wet, she zoned and watched the world in front of her. Sometimes she wished he was still here, waiting for her in Pismo when she left this place in the winter months, she wanted to see him one last time and say those three words that she wanted to tell him. Grabbing a handful of sand, she let it slip through her hands as she thought about that year with Adonis, she smiled about the ironic name because, Adonis was a young man that Aphrodite loved dearly and he then died at a young age by a tusk of a wild boar. They met when she was shopping and she tripped on her heel and he caught her just before she hit the ground, she commented how he had all that strength to catch her plus with five shopping bags on each arm. To thank him, Cyrene bought him lunch and they sat and talked for hours, she learned a lot about this man, he was twenty years old and in college to become a doctor. He also learned a lot about herself, and she couldn’t keep her eyes off of him, she was used to having the other effect on men. The two of them started out as friends, and then the relationship climbed to unofficial boyfriend and girlfriend, they acted like the part, but no strings.
On this day of last year, he was off to a trip to Italy with a few of his friends and he stopped by her house the night before, he took by her hands and led her out towards the back patio and talked. Adonis bought Cyrene a diamond necklace that was a locket, inside was a picture of him and her at an amusement back kissing, he said that he loved her and knew that they were meant to be together forever. Cyrene was shocked, she didn’t know what to do, she was scared and didn’t know what to say. Instead she told Adonis that she would have to think about, and that she wasn’t the type to get into anything serious for a long time, Adonis got up and she walked him towards the door, kissed her, and walked out to his car. Just before he got into his car, Cyrene yelled out, Wait! I wanted to say…. she hesitated saying I love you to him, be safe ok? That’s all I ask. she said. Adonis chuckled, nodded and waved, getting into his car, and drove away. She then got a call that next night form Adonis’s mom saying that they never made it to Italy, on their way to the airport, a car crashed into them on the free way and there was a seven car pile up and no survivors. Cyrene was devastated for months, she couldn’t talk to anyone, she still tried to look her best on the outside, but in the inside she was a mess. That was when Cyrene vowed that she would never let anyone get that close to her, and then her warm heart turned to ice.
Out on the beach at camp, she thought about that memory and started to cry, she had to, there was no point holding it in. Pulling her knees to her chest, she buried her face and let it go, thanking to herself that she was wearing waterproof make up so she still looked beautiful crying.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
