The day was coming to an end and as usual Sami was dead tired. Here day consisted of sword training and trying to survive the rock wall. She almost didn’t make it. Ever since she had spoken with her dad at Camp Sami made it her mission to become great at something. She didn’t want to be mediocre at everything. Besides if she were better able to defend herself she would be able to go out and find Riley. Sami rubbed the back of her neck as she left the armory heading toward the lake. A smile played on her lips when she thought about the incident in the forest. Somehow, Riley had managed to help her out and actually saved her life.
When she reached the beach Sami eased herself onto the sand. She could almost see Riley’s smile in her mind. She felt good knowing she would see him again soon. Sami had to believe that she would see Riley again soon. There was so much she needed to tell him and so much she needed to apologize for. Her hands reached up and she played with the silver locket around her neck. As Sami let the cool air from the water wash over her she couldn’t help but feel uncertainty in her gut.
In the past two days Sami’s hopes of seeing Riley again were cornered by doubt. It was the first time she had ever began to seriously question if her brother was still alive. Something didn’t feel right but Sami refused to give into that feeling. She couldn’t dwell on the what if. There was absolutely no way that Riley was dead. She would instantly know, she was sure of it. Sami’s smile dropped from her face. Pulling in her bottom lip to chew on it Sami made a silent prayer to Hermes to protect Riley, at least until she would be able to leave Camp and find him.
Sami drew in a breath and sighed forcing another optimistic smile to her face. She reached back and drew her hair tighter in the ponytail. She thought about her accomplishments today. Sami was steadily getting better with a blade. Her archery needed a little work, but her skills with a sword were good enough to make a kid of Ares falter slightly. And while she was still defeated, Sami walked away with a little pride. “You should have seen me Riley.” She muttered to the open air.

Nick had been cooped up in the big house way to long, yeah he had to get a couple ribs reset and he was still a little sore. Just he was never one to just lay there and let people take care of him, even if one of them was a certain daughter of Athena. Gail had barely left his side since they had appeared on the front porch of the big house, it really seemed like she was worried about him. But no, he kept reminding himself that she was probably just feeling guilty of the fact that she had injured him before he had even gone on the quest....Even if he kept telling her that it wasn't her fault.
He had gotten up out of bed, as quietly as he could and made his way past Gail who had dozed off in a chair by his bed. He left her a note that said Need to get some air, be back soon...Nicholia He didn't have any of his clothes in the big house really, just the pajama pants he was wearing, some flip flops and his favorite hoody. He pulled the jacket on, but not zipping it up and he put the hood up over his dark brown hair before sticking his hands in the pockets and getting out of the big house. Making sure not to wake anyone who would miss him..
He hadn't really had anywhere in particular in mind when he left, but it wasn't to long before he found himself walking along the beach. He closed his eyes and just walked, closing his eyes and just listening to the waves.
He didn't open his eyes again until he sensed another presence on the beach, when he looked around and his eyes finally settled on the figure his heart dropped. Sami... It wasn't that he was unhappy to see her, he considered her a good friend but it was the fact that he carried awful news with him. He had failed her, and failed her brother. Riley was dead, and he knew that the news just may kill Sami too. Once he was in ear shot he waved to her." Hey Sami.." He said as he approached, his voice still sounding a little hoarser than usual. He lowered his hood once he was beside her, and put on a forced smile." We got to stop meeting like this.." He joked, knowing that this was also the place they first met." How have you been?"

Sami jumped a little as someone greeted her. She turned and the shock washed away into a smile as she saw Nick the son of Zeus standing there. It had been a few weeks since she had seen Nick. He had been off on that quest with Annabeth Chase and Percy Jackson. The smile faded slightly as she actually took in what Nick’s condition was. She blinked and turned a further to face him, “Nick, oh my Gods.” Her eyes were full of concern as her friend sat down beside her. He was still managing to joke which was always a good thing.
She shifted and forced a smile through the worry, “Yeah, tell me about it.” Sami replied. Chewing her bottom lip she forced herself to focus on Nick’s question. “I’m fine, Nick what in the name of the Gods happened? Are you okay? Are Percy and Annabeth okay?” Her words were flying a mile a minute again like they normally did when she got nervous or excited. Sami caught herself and swallowed taking a deep breath.
She rewound and went back to answer Nick’s question fully. “Sorry. I guess I’ve been doing okay.” Obviously Percy and Annabeth were okay, otherwise Sami would have heard about it by now they were the Camp’s it couple. Sami scratched her head for a second and shrugged. “I’m training more and more each day. I’m going to find Riley.”
Her eye lit up when she said his name. “You Nick I have a feeling that he’s looking for me. And I realized I can’t sit around and wait for him to come here. I’m going to find him and tell him how sorry I am for abandoning him. You’d love him, he’s really funny and he does the best impression of the Genie from Aladdin. It was kind of our favorite movie when we were growing up.” Sami licked her lips and sighed. She placed her hand on Nick’s leg and look of worry came back. As Sami looked in Nick’s eyes she could tell something was wrong. “I didn’t know you guys were back from the quest. I suppose I’ve been busy, I don ‘t hang around the other campers much anymore. What happened out there?”

Nick couldn't help but smile as the young blond smiled up at him. It was nice to see her smile, but he felt his stomach lurch a little as he thought that it may be the last time she smiled for a long time. How could he possibly tell her what happened? That her brother had sacrificed himself for a useless cause? He sat beside her and right away noticed the worry and concern in her eyes as she saw what kind of shape he was in. He didn't deserve her concern, her friendship. He went on a Quest to bring her brother back to camp, to find her other half and make her whole again but he failed..
Now as her friend, it was his job to tell her about her brother and pray that she doesn't hate him. If she doesn't, he would do all he could do be there for her. Though if she does hate him, well he thought he would probably deserve it. He kept his hands buried into the pockets of his hoodie, while his toes buried themselves into the sand. He waited until she was done with her little rambling fit, he didn't really mind. He was used to it by now.
However when she said she was going to go and find Riley his heart sank again. Gods how what he supposed to do this? Zeus give me strength, father please He prayed silently as he turned to look at his friends." Sami...I, I really need to talk to you okay?" He placed his large hand on top of hers on his leg." When we finally got to where we where meant too, it was an island in the middle of no where with a lighthouse. But we got there to late. Phobos, the god of fear had tricked a boy into exchanging his soul for another. A soul that he thought if he brought back would serve him. We tried to get to the boy in time, but Phobos showed Annabeth her fear and threw me into a wall and broke like four of my ribs. Before we could get to him, the boy passed away and Luke Castellan was laying beside him..." He sighed and ran his fingers threw his dark hair with the hand that wasn't holding hers." Luke put on an act that he was on Phobos' side, but it was only to get a good shot at him..We all got home but.." He turned and looked his friend in the eyes, his own filled with sorrow and regret." The boy we couldn't save...Gods I wanted to save him Sami....It was Riley...I'm sorry." He said finally in a hoarse voice, squeezing her hand comfortingly.

Sami shifted slightly at the tone in Nick’s voice. Obviously things hadn’t gone too well on the quest. She stared at Nick for a moment trying to search his face for the answer and the reason behind all of the sadness. Taking a deep breath she nodded and tried to manage a small encouraging smile. “Yeah sure,” Her eyes fell to the hand on top of hers. Nick’s hands were baseball mitts compared to her petite hands. Had Percy or Annabeth gotten seriously hurt, more so than Nick? Had one of them died? No. If Percy or Annabeth died Sami would have heard about it, there was no doubt about that.
She listened to Nick recall the quest, her eyebrows lifting and falling at the appropriate parts. When Nick mentioned a boy Sami thought, who would be that stupid? Sami wondered why Percy hadn’t done more to stop all of this, wasn’t he supposed to be invincible? Going up against a God should have been cake walk. Nick would be in one piece. Sami’s expression went all dreamy for a second as she tried to remember the stories about the demigod Luke Castellan. She had heard about him from many of her siblings. He served with Kronos but died at the end of the war, to save everyone. Something like that. He was a son of Hermes and her brother. Sami couldn’t understand why he would have sided with Kronos in the first place. It was a dumb thing to do, just like that kid who killed himself in Nick’s story.
Her eyes drifted up to Nick’s hair as he ran his finger through it. She was quiet the whole time even though she wanted to ask about a billion questions. Sami chewed her lower lip and glanced down at her lap. Sami wasn’t sure why Nick sounded so sad though. Sure a kid had died but they all returned alive. Nick was making it sound like he knew the poor kid. She looked back to Nick, he was staring at her and the pain in his eyes was too much. A light bulb went off in Sami’s head the instant Nick gave her that look. She knew everything before Nick said it. Her heart rate accelerated as her worst fear was realized. The feeling in her gut over the last two days and that hot jab to her stomach she felt during training that day wasn’t just a cramp. It was a sign. Her free hand shot up to the silver chain around her neck. She clasped the heart shaped locket and squeezed till she thought her nails would cut through her skin.
“No” She mumbled shaking her head but Nick continued and confirmed everything she had been denying. As Nick said Riley’s name Sami’s eyes started to ring and the apology from Nick cut out.
Hearing that Riley was dead left Sami with a hollow pain in her chest. All of the air was sucked from her lungs and for a minute she almost forgot to breathe. Tears rolled down her cheeks and they stung like pouring salt into a fresh wound. Her jaw quivered and the air came back to her. She gasped for breath and stared over Nick’s shoulder unable to look at his face any longer. Sami wanted to say something say anything but her brain wouldn’t let her form complete words or thoughts. They broken up in fragments and bitter cold memories flooded her mind.
She felt useless and numb. Sami wasn’t aware of Nick squeezing her hand. She was hardly aware that he was still sitting there. Everything she had done here at camp was pointless. She betrayed her brother, if she had gone with him back then everything would be okay now. Or at the very least the two of them would have died together. Luke. Phobos. Riley...names blurred together and Sami felt guilty for everything. A terrible picture of Riley stabbing himself entered her mind. Blood poured form his wound and the light vanished from his blue eyes. She snapped.
Sami had been silently crying for just about a minute and a half and suddenly she let out a agonizing howl of sorrow. She ripped her hand away from Nick to cover her face as heavy sobs shook her shoulders. The world darkened. It could have been the tears clouding Sami’s vision but it to her everything seemed lost. The biggest thing that drove Sami mad with sorrow was that Riley died without knowing she was sorry for everything that had happened. He probably died hating her. Sami couldn’t stand to live with that knowledge. Words were still absent. She couldn’t portray what she thought or felt verbally, but then again Sami didn’t need to. Her emotion reaction was enough.
After another minute Sami sniffled and tried to speak. Her words came out in gasping breaths, “Where-where is heee? You did---n’t lea-leave him there did did you?” She paused to try and catch her breath but it didn’t help. “Why—why did—n’t you hell-help...” She broke off into another sob. Sami took a minute to gather more deep breaths. She shut her eyes tight momentarily cutting off the streamline of tears. Blaming Nick wouldn’t help. She knew he had tried. Nick wasn’t that kind of person. The guilt was hers.
