Looks::
James has chocolate brown hair that is always kept neatly, and a long, pale face that speaks more of his most recent choice of residency than anything else (see History). His choice of clothing is usually bland and formal: a button-up top and slacks are a must, and usually a jacket and tie to complete the set. Occasionally he wears reader glasses as well. His hight is average and his frame slightly on the lanky side. Perhaps the only thing unusual about him are his eyes. They seem an odd shade of silvery blue in most lights, though can sometimes appear to have flecks of green, violet, and sometimes even yellow or red. They seem to change with varying light, or perhaps viewpoint, though it’s nearly impossible to tell.
Personality::
James has grown accustomed to being alone, and that is how he prefers it most of the time. He has no one he considers a friend, but many people he considers ‘interesting case studies’. His anti-social behavior mostly stemmed from a mix between a realization of his abilities, his childhood habits, and their combined effect on his little sister, Jessica (for more, see History). His friends are his books and, occasionally, his ipod. He can be awkward around people at first, and never really open up all the way. He doesn’t discriminate at all; mortal to demigod, to mythical creature, to god (if ever he met one). He simply doesn’t make friends with anyone easily, if at all.
James’ views on life and on every sentient being (mortal, demigod, god, etc) are, in most people’s eyes, a bit cold. To him, life is an experiment. He loves to push himself to new limits, and sometimes he can push others a little too much too. He has little regard for feelings, though it is more because of his isolation than actually being coldhearted. He will not hesitate to use his abilities on another person, so long as he knows it will not be fatal. One of his great aspirations is to replicate, if on a smaller scale, the feat his half-brother, Morpheus, did when putting all of downtown Manhattan to sleep. This is not to say he sided with Kronos’ cause, though. James is a man of psychology and is more likely to play devil’s advocate than anything else. He viewed the move, as much of the others done by both sides in that great war, as curious tactics employed to either physically or mentally weaken the opponent, the latter of which being his prime interest. Nothing more.
He will jump at any chance to analyze a particularly interesting case, often using surprisingly direct routes to butt into areas where people generally wouldn’t want to talk about. This follows his lack of concern for what people think about him; he sees nothing wrong with his tactics simply because they are all he knows. Because of his peculiar sleeping habits (see History), he is devoted almost entirely to the pursuit of knowledge, for lack of anything else to do most of the time. His profession gears more towards sleep disorders, though he has found time over the years to study a wide variety of things as well. Over all, he tends to give off a sort of 'mad scientist' vibe, as some of his old college peers would have described him.

History::
James was born to Margaret Shreve and Hypnos in the dead of winter in 1982 just on the outskirts of Charleston, South Carolina. He had a charmed life: his family was rich, he lived on an old plantation with acres of land, and he had a mother and grandparents that adored him, and his little sister, two years younger than him, thought he could do no wrong. But there was something wrong. Even as a toddler, James simply hardly ever slept. He didn't fuss or complain, but he only seemed to need a couple hours a day to tide him over. By the time he started kindergarden, it was down to one hour at most. His mother took him to doctor after doctor, but no one seemed to be able to diagnose his problem. Maraget worried endlessly, but eventually she had to cut him some slack so he could regularly attend school rather than regularly attend appointments all the time.
But by then, the damage was already setting in for Jessica. Because she idolized her brother so much, she saw his ability to stay up unnaturally late as a goal for herself as well. By the time she was ten, she was addicted to caffeine and too stubborn to give it up. But it was about that time, when James was 12, that his abilities started to truely manifest themselves even more. It had stemmed from his desire to help his sister with her own problem that he learned he could literally put people to sleep. His first time with it, she didn't wake up for three days, which sent the entire family into a panic as she was held in the hospital.
From then on, he was careful around other people, but noticed that whenever he got too close, others tended to quiet down to an almost stupor. He spent his hours of alone time during the nights working on controlling his weird effect on people until, by the time he graduated high school, he was able to be within a few feet of someone without noticeable effect (though touching was out of the question).
When he wasn't working on his abilities, he was studying. In his opinion, the less time he spent around people, the better off they were. It was thanks to this that he was accepted into Harvard easily and immediately outpaced the rest of his class, able to take more classes thanks to his dislike for social gatherings and more time for studying. It was while he was at Harvard that he was visited by his father, Hypnos, who patiently explained everything about the greek gods and about James' own place in it. Also, he explained James' unusual sleeping patterns that had baffled doctors since his childhood: thanks to his parentage, he simply reenergized from sleep much faster than other, normal, people. It was after the realization of being a half-blood that the mythological monsters started knocking on his doorstep, though they were still few as he was not exactly Olympian-kid material. Never one for a fight, he tended to rely more on trying to put the beasts to sleep and then run for it than actually force them away.
James graduated a year early with a full PhD in Psychology with the use of his impressive thesis paper on insomnia (ironically). After getting his degree, he moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where he began his practice in treating people who had been affected by the area's ever-changing daylight hours. While in Anchorage, James was occasionally visited by his three immortal half-brothers, which was how he eventually learned from none other than Morpheus himself that there was a whole camp of demigods and there had even been a war they had been involved in. He was inspired first to test his abilities after learning what Morpheus had done to Manhattan, which all-in-all helped his area in Anchorage get much better sleep at night. Though his curiosity overcame him and he eventually packed up his bags and headed back south towards Long Island to finally try to meet other people like himself.
