Joel was all smiles. He had been since he happened across Julia. Well, in truth she stumbled upon Joel in the lake. He was glad she did. It was unexpected for him to fall so hard, or eve fall at all. But if someone asked Joel flat out about his feelings for Julia Porter he would reply, “Yes, I love her.” And that was a great feeling. He smoother out the blanket at the bottom of the amphitheater. The hearth was burning brightly. Everyone else would be at capture the flag but Joel had something else in mind. He wanted to have a special night just him and Julia. Hopefully Chiron wouldn’t be too cross with him.
His heart raced waiting for Julia, his girlfriend, to arrive. He wrung his hands together pacing back and forth looking for any imperfection. He took a few pillows from his otherwise empty cabin and arranged them on the blanket. If only they were plain white. He imagined an exotic layout with pillows that almost looked Arabian. A basic quilt and boring old camp pillows wasn’t good enough for Julia. He sighed. Everything was imperfect. But it was too late to change anything now.
The son of Triton had never been more nervous. Tonight was the night he was going to tell Julia about Phobos. Maybe. He still hadn’t fully decided. Joel had weighed the consequences in his mind a million times over. He didn’t want to lose now that he had her but Julia wasn’t just another dumb Aphrodite kid. She was smart. She would figure him out. And then there was the problem with Phobos. Joel took a deep breath and sat down on the ground burying his face in his hands. He couldn’t let Phobos know about Julia.
“What am I doing?” He muttered staring into the hearth. Joel flopped back and stared up at the clear night sky watching the constellations he had learned everything about. There was no Triton in the sky though. No place at Camp and no place in the stars for Triton. Joel rolled his eyes. He was pretty sure he still hated Percy but ever since he met Julia he had seriously started to rethink this whole Phobos alliance. Not like he had a choice in the matter though. Maggie was in danger and Joel had no way of protecting her. She wouldn’t be allowed to come to camp, the safest place for demigods. He would have been angry with Julia for stirring such emotions that Joel had all but forgotten he had, but it felt so great to be around her and to feel like that. This relationship complicated things.
“I can never tell her.” He concluded opening his eyes again watching as a shooting star streaked the sky. Joel hesitated but he shut his eyes and made a wish like a fool. NOTES::adorable export! WORD COUNT::479

Julia had been avoiding any situation that would involve seeing Joel. It had been that way since she had met her godly half-brother in the woods. She was too worried about what she would do if she saw him again; wasn’t even sure if she would be able to see him without either breaking into tears or screaming and throwing something at him. And neither of those sounded like something she wanted to do to the guy she had fallen head-over-heels for. Crying things out to her brother, though she hadn’t told him the exact details, had helped a bit but she had still been keeping a safe distance from the Triton cabin just to be safe. There were enough things screwing this up without her stepping in to help.
But then Joel had thrown a wrench into her plans. If it hadn’t been for the flutter in her heart when she’d heard he was waiting for her at the amphitheater she might have just ignored the invitation to join him. Her heart had a different idea though, and she couldn’t resist the urge to slip away from capture the flag to go see him. Sure, she didn’t like the fact that her cabin’s reputation would take another blow because she decided to ignore the game but the prospect of seeing Joel had rekindled the feelings she’d felt when they met each other at the lake. Feelings that were too strong to just push aside for the good of her cabin.
She had stayed through the beginning of the game, but slipped away as things picked up. She wouldn’t be missed that badly, right? After she collapsed her dagger back into a nail file and stowed it safely in the back pocket of her jeans, Julia began removing pieces of armor as she made her way towards the amphitheater and dropping them to the ground. She would come back and clean them up eventually. Finally pulling off her armguards left Julia in a simple long-sleeved v-neck and a pair of jeans. Her hair was still pulled back from getting ready for the game and she didn’t plan on taking it down. She hadn’t brought a brush and didn’t really feel like trying to style her hair with fingers.
What was all of this about? Of course Julia’s mind flew to the Phobos situation… But there was no way Joel could know that she knew. Unless Phobos told him. And what would that mean? Was he planning to tell her about what was going on? Julia had plenty of her own secrets and she wasn’t sure if she could even tell Joel about them without risking some sort of retaliation. She was close to the amphitheater now and took a moment to calm herself down, try to stop her heart from beating out of her chest before she moved into the space.
A smirk passed across her features as she saw Joel laying on the ground. The set-up was absolutely gorgeous ; it must have taken him quite a bit of time to organize. Another flutter caught her off guard before she calmed herself down and began to move towards him, keeping her footsteps as silent as possible. She wanted to surprise him. Julia slowly made her way to the bottom of the amphitheater, quietly approaching Joel on the blanket. When she was close enough she leaned down and placed a kiss on his cheek. ”You seem to be a great way to get out of combat.”

Joel opened his eyes after the wish and let out a heavy sigh. He hadn’t felt so mixed up in, well he wasn’t sure how long. This whole thing with Julia was a new feeling. Sometimes he wished that none of this had happened. He almost preferred life prior to meeting Julia when things were only semi complicated. But then he thought about her and the way she smiled, and laughed and Joel hated himself for even thinking about wishing her away. There had to be a way to get out of this Phobos deal. Joel could find a safe house to take Maggie to and everything would be alright. Phobos wouldn’t come to Camp...would he?
He shut his eyes again trying to come up with a plan in his head. The light kiss on his cheek brought his concentration and sent his heart racing. Joel’s eyes popped open. He blinked and turned to look at Julia. There was no point in trying to hide the smile. Joel gazed up at her completely enthralled by everything about this girl. “Well I try.” He replied with a shrug.
Joel sat up just enough to plant a kiss on Julia. Joel let out a small laugh. He had forgotten the real reason he was doing all of this. It seemed like he just wanted to spend more time with Julia but there was another motive behind tonight. Joel needed to man up and confess what he had promised Phobos. Everyone in camp would hate him and throw him out but if he told Julia maybe it wouldn’t be so bad.
And while Joel had nearly convinced himself that he could never tell her only a few minutes ago, he was second guessing himself. That was another new thing that started after meeting Julia. He had never doubted himself before. Joel pushed a chunk of Julia’s hair from her face, his hand lingering for a long moment on her cheek. He flushed red though it probably wasn’t too noticeable in the firelight. He sighed.
“You know you manage to look beautiful in any light.” Joel said. “Must be an Aphrodite thing.” He paused and took a deep breath kissing her once again. He smirked as he pulled away and reached over to grab another pillow from the other side of him. He fluffed it and laid it down gesturing for Julia to lie down. The smile slowly fell from his face but he kept the concern and anxiety from his eyes. “You know that since meeting you I haven’t really been the same. I mean I don’t think I’ve met a girl quite like you. You’ve managed to break any kind of wall.” Joel interwove his fingers with hers. “And I would do anything for you, even with this whole war looming. You’re probably one of the most important things to me right now. And I hope I’m not piling all of this onto you and, oh Gods now I’m babbling I’m just going to shut up now.” He flushed a deeper shade of red. NOTES::adorable export! WORD COUNT::512

Julia couldn’t hide the smile that came to her face and the spark in her eyes when Joel smiled up at her. ”And you’re good for plenty of other things.” She said after he had kissed her. Good for making her forget about everything else that was going on around them. Good for turning the confident heart breaker into a giddy girl that was experiencing love for the first time… She blushed a little at that thought. Aphrodite kids were supposed to be completely in tune with love, and here she was feeling like a girl on her way to her first high school dance. Well, if you ignored the fact that there were some gods and goddesses watching.
A chill passed over her when Joel’s hand lingered on her face for a moment after brushing a strand of her hair out of her face. When she was around him it was so easy to ignore everything she was so worried about. She never wanted to leave; unless there was a way for them to run away and get away from everything. But that wasn’t possible. Not with gods who had the ability to appear at will.
”Flattery will get you everywhere.” She said, smirking at him before he kissed her again. She was glad when he pulled a pillow over and gestured for her to lie down next to him. Julia was starting to feel a bit dizzy. Joel just seemed to have that effect on her. ”I haven’t been the same either Joel…” What could she go into? That she wasn’t used to being in love, but rather she was used to breaking hearts? What did that make her look like? No, she wasn’t going to get into that. But she definitely was different. She gave his hand a reassuring squeeze after he finished talking. ”I would do anything for you Joel. You’re not piling anything onto me. You’re more important to me than anything else and I would rather die than do something that would hurt you.” She took a breath and kissed him, wishing again that they could just stay here and forget about everything and all of the gods who wanted to pull them into a war.
”You’re adorable when you babble.” She said, looking into his eyes and smiling. ”And you’re romantic… And chivalrous… And you don’t need to shut up because your voice is probably my favorite sound in the world.” She moved a little closer to him, laying on her back and looking up at the sky, her hand still intertwined with his.

The more he prolonged the inevitable the more nervous Joel became. He swallowed trying to keep the doubt from his eyes. Around Julia he wasn’t his cunning sly self and it was very inconvenient. Not that lying would be the best way to go about this. Joel smiled at her wishing that the entire world and all of the problems that came with it would vanish. This whole mess with Phobos was...well a mess. And there was no avoiding the conversation any longer.
“Julia...” He stopped short though when Julia began to explain how much he meant to her. Joel starred dumbfounded at the daughter of Aphrodite and hardly kissed her back when she leaned into him. Great, there was some more guilt to be added to his conscious. Joel’s throat suddenly felt dry. He tried to swallow but it was extremely difficult. He rolled over on his back lying next to her. His thumb swept over her hand. He wanted to reply to all of the complements but he just couldn’t. If he lost Julia because of this stupid lie, Joel wasn’t sure what he was going to do. The only people he had in his life whom he trusted were his sister Maggie and his girlfriend, the beautiful demigod next to him.
Joel turned his head to Julia and starred at her for a moment wondering how to begin. If she cared about him as much as she claimed, maybe she would understand after all. Joel had to take the chance otherwise things could go from bad to worse.
He found himself saying, “I love you.” That probably wasn’t the best way to start out the conversation that would lead to him revealing his alliance to the Fear God. “I mean it. I’ve never meant three words more in my life. And its because I love you that I have to be honest with you.”
Joel sat up still holding onto her hand. There was no trace of a smile on his face. It was now or never and if the Fates were kind enough they wouldn’t take Julia away from him because of his stupidity. Joel glanced around to make sure no one was listening. He lowered his voice to a whisper. “The only reason I came to camp was under the orders of Phobos. And before you freak out and run off to turn me over to Chiron, it’s different now. You can’t tell anyone, no one at all. And I’d throw it all away if I could but I can’t. I can’t tell you why but I just needed you to know the truth before you got hurt.” Joel sighed not feeling any of the weight lift from his shoulders. If anything there was an extra ton added. He just confessed to treason against Camp Half-Blood and the Olympian Gods. He was a traitor but the truth had to come from his mouth and not anyone else’s, especially not Phobos.

Julia, for one, wanted to prolong the inevitable as long as she could. How would he react when he found out that she already knew about Phobos and hadn’t told him? And what had Phobos meant about asking Joel the real reason he was helping the god? She could tell that something was wrong with him and she could only hope he couldn’t tell the same about her.
She was glad he was cut off when she started talking about how much he meant in her life. She didn’t want him to feel bad, she just wanted to make it clear that she wasn’t going to let him get hurt, even if he wasn’t aware she knew what she would be trying to protect him from. Another small gesture, just his thumb running across her hand, was enough to make her want to just come out and tell him that she knew what was going on and that he didn’t need to hide or worry about anything anymore. But she didn’t want to upset him or make him think she had been hiding anything from him. She just hadn’t wanted to bring up the Phobos incident before she made up her mind about his offer, which she still hadn’t done. She didn’t want to see Joel get hurt but she wasn’t going to abandon her family. Her mother had never done anything make Julia hate her, and her siblings certainly didn’t deserve to die.
Julia’s face flushed red when Joel said he loved her, but she hoped it would go unnoticed. She wanted to reassure him and let him know he could tell her anything, but she got the feeling he didn’t want her to cut him off this time. She let him continue, watching as he sat up. Should she feign surprise? Or just let him know what had happened in the forest?
”Joel… I love you too.”
She said, sitting up as well. ”And if we’re being honest with each other then… Then I need to tell you something too. The day we met, after we left the lake, I skipped dinner and went into the forest to think about… things.” About how she was worried he was going to break her heart, even if she was a child of Aphrodite, because she had done that to so many guys in the past. About how she felt like this was different than any other relationship she’d ever been in, even though they’d only known each other for a short time. ”And I met my brother, Phobos.” She said, even though the name sent chills down her spine. ”He told me you were working for him… But I can’t believe you would be helping him because you don’t like anyone at camp or because you’re angry at the gods. I know you’re not like that.” She stated firmly, giving his hand a slight squeeze. ”I meant what I said before, Joel. I would do anything for you, anything to stop you from getting hurt.” And as for her getting hurt? She had no doubt her half-brother would find a way to hurt her if it meant Joel helping him… Or vice versa. [/blockquote]

The moment Julia said those three words that held so much weight and meaning Joel felt himself exhale with relief. Hearing her say those words freed him for a moment from everything. He was more than overjoyed to hear her say those words toward him. But then the reality of the situation sank in. He was endangering her just by being with her. Phobos would use Julia to get to him just like he used Maggie. Joel couldn’t have two of the people he loved in danger and under threat from that psychopathic panda.
He kept a grip on her hands as she began to be honest with him. In hindsight Joel really wish she hadn’t. What she said to him was not something Joel wanted to hear in a million years. His brow furrowed as he processed what the forest and thinking had to mean. Joel didn’t have to wait long to find out. Phobos. The color drained from his face and Joel dropped Julia’s hands and he sat back away form her with a dull sick expression on his face. He eyes stared off into space scanning the open air as if trying to pluck an explanation from the particles.
Joel pulled his hands back from Julia’s again. When she had finished Joel met her gaze the same sick expression there as before. “You’ve just met me Julia, how can you say you know I’m not like that. Obviously I am otherwise I wouldn’t be working with Phobos.” He stopped for a second anger emerging at different levels. Joel was frustrated that Julia had been reckless and gone off into the forest at dinner alone. He was angry with Phobos for even speaking with Julia. And most of all he was angry that Julia knew perfectly well about everything he was doing with Phobos and didn’t say anything.
“You don’t know the first thing about me Julia.” Joel scoffed. His eyes hardened he couldn’t believe that Phobos had met with her. Joel didn’t want Phobos within ten miles of Julia after what happened with Maggie. There was a cold hatred building in Joel’s heart. He was so upset that his hands started to shake. Joel’s brow creased as he turned his to the ground not wanting to look Julia in the eyes.
“Wait.” He said realizing the meaning in Julia’s words. Joel’s head shot up again this time with a look of concern and caution dancing in his eyes. “Julia, what do you mean you would do anything for me? What did you do?” Joel still loved this girl and could not stand the idea that she would give her life for him. He didn’t want to lose her, she and Maggie were the most important people in the world and Phobos now had some kind of control over the both of them. “What did you do in the forest with Phobos?” Joel asked again this time with more urgency and anger in his voice. His relief made her smile again. She just hoped he felt the same way. He had said he loved her first, but did love mean the same thing to a son of Triton as it did to a daughter of Aphrodite? She was pretty sure things were different with Joel, but she had had plenty of other guys tell her that they loved her in her past. She’d never returned the words before though, and this was something completely different. There was a whole new level and depth to what she was feeling with Joel, like she couldn’t stand the thought of living without him. Which was why she was willing to do whatever it took to make sure nothing bad happened to him.
She could see the change in him as he processed what her words meant. First the furrowed brow, not too bad. That could just mean confusion, right? But then he went pale and backed off from her. Her expression changed but she tried to hide the sadness that came along with his actions. Could she blame him though? Obviously Phobos was associated with bad memories to Joel, to anyone really, and to hear that someone you cared about had met the god? That couldn’t bode well. Julia had flat out refused to believe it at first when Phobos told her about Joel, but Joel was hearing this straight from her.
He pulled his hands back again, looking at her and bringing up the fact they hadn’t known each other for a long time. ”Just because you’re working with him doesn’t mean you’re a bad person, Joel.” She tried to look away from his gaze, anywhere but at that sick expression, but couldn’t make herself look away. ”When he was talking about you he told me to ask you about the real reason you were helping him.” She wasn’t even sure if she should be bringing this up with him. ”If there’s something else you know you can tell me. We might have just met each other but I know you’re not the kind of person who wants to destroy just to destroy.” She just hoped he would be honest with her. She wanted to help him.
Her gaze dropped to the ground as Joel’s voice was filled with more anger than before. ”I might not know the first thing about you, but that doesn’t mean I can’t try to learn more. Or that I can’t help you. I know that I love you, and that’s all that matters.” Maybe he wouldn’t understand. Julia wasn’t just going to sit by and let someone she loved, maybe the person she loved most in the world, be played as a pawn by some power-hungry idiot half-brother of hers.
Julia’s head shot up a moment after Joel’s and she noted the concern in his eyes. ”I mean that I would do anything for you.” She stated, frowning slightly. When he asked what had happened in the forest she looked away again, wiping away a tear that had formed in her eye. ”I didn’t do anything. Not yet at least.” Thinking of the forest threatened to bring up more tears, which she wiped away as she thought of what Phobos had done. ”He told me that he would give me a day to think over the offer of joining him. He hasn’t come back yet, but I’m not sure when he will. And to be honest I haven’t figured out what I’m going to do. She reached out and placed a hand on his arm. ”I’m not going to let him do anything to hurt you, no matter what that means for me.”

“What does it make me then Julia if not a bad person?” Joel scoffed, “I’m working with the enemy, that doesn’t exactly make me a hero!” He glanced around hoping there was no one else nearby to over hear their conversation. He pinched the bridge of his nose and brought his voice down again to a stage whisper. “What do you want to hear Julia? I could have said no to working with him but I saw a chance for my own father’s revenge and I took it, to prove something to my father. I hate Percy Jackson as much as he does and as much as Phobos. I’d see him fall at Phobos’s hand any day, and I don’t know why I hate him so much I just do. Hate that I can’t explain, does that really make me a hero?”
Joel still couldn’t find the exact extent of his hatred for Percy Jackson. He had never met the kid for more than a few minutes before in his life and yet Joel held so much animosity toward the Son of Poseidon. He liked to claim that it was because Percy acted so high and mighty but as Joel confessed to Julia it had to do with Triton. Joel knew his father’s dislike for Percy, his own half brother. It made Percy his uncle, but that didn’t quite matter to Joel to be honest. Triton had never really been there for Joel and he hadn’t heard from him in a very long time. It was as Joel said, he was doing this for his father. Maybe then Triton would be proud of him. It was a stupid reason but Joel resented Percy for the relationship he had with his father Poseidon.
“I’m a very good actor Julia. I’ve had to be.”
Joel got to his feet a new wave of worry pulsing in his veins. His head was full of what if’s and what could be’s involving Phobos and Maggie and Julia. He didn’t want Phobos to have either of them and right now it was safe to say that their lives were in the God of Fear’s hands. It was all because of Joel, which was the bit that made him want to vomit. He ran his hands through his hair and began to pace back and forth. He stopped, his back turned to Julia. Joel was struck by the words ‘I love you’ and it froze him for a moment. There was no getting used to hearing those words come from Julia.
“He’s holding my sister as insurance, so I don’t go back on my word. If I fail him in anyway she dies.” Joel slowly turned and tried to keep the pathetic expression from his eyes. He didn’t need Julia to pity him. He didn’t want or need anyone to pity him. And the last thing he wanted was Phobos going anywhere near Julia. He got back to his knees again moving closer to Julia but not reaching for her. He searched her eyes trying to deduce if she was telling him the full truth. This is bad. He thought, I can’t let him take Julia too. Joel swallowed passed the lump in his throat.
He heaved a sigh and hung his head starring down at the blanket he had laid out for them. His hands came up and covered his face, he didn’t cry but he felt like he might. For a split second Joel found himself wishing he hadn’t met Julia that way she couldn’t be put in danger but then the idea seemed in itself a betrayal. He erased the thought and slowly tilted his head back up toward Julia. The touch of her hand on his arm made Joel feel cold not warm and comforted, as it should have. The image of Julia lying dead next to his sister tore him inside.
“I’m not going to let you die for me or even put yourself in that situation.” his voice was shaky and soft just above a whisper. “But I think it’d be more dangerous for you not to accept the offer.” Finally making eye contact there was a tear threatening to drop from the corner of his eye. “Why did you have to come along and be so perfect?” There was that regret and the thought about never meeting her. Joel had brought her into this even without meaning to. He should have known that anyone who got close to him would have to answer to Phobos at some point. It was selfish what Joel did and he would never forgive himself if she took the offer or even if she denied it. There was no simple solution to this disaster that he had created by coming to camp. ”I don’t know what that makes you!” She shot back, caught somewhere between anger and sadness. ”I don’t care if you’re not a hero, Joel!” She choked out, a few tears falling down her cheeks as she listened to what he was saying. She wasn’t sure what to think about it. She could see why Joel would want to help his father, but was working with Phobos the right way to do it? She had never really met Percy, but other than occasionally seeming to have a big ego he didn’t look that bad. And to be honest he deserved that ego; he had saved the world a few years ago after all. Even if Joel’s father didn’t like him, Percy didn’t deserve to die.
”You shouldn’t have to prove anything to your father, Joel. Especially not this way.” Her voice was quiet, almost as if she hadn’t wanted him to hear what she was saying. ”I understand that you want to have a good relationship with him. Love isn’t just about romance and I know more than anyone the importance of love in life.” And the opposite of that love was hate, which seemed to be consuming Joel’s life at the moment.
Julia let her head drop into her hands as Joel stood up. She wiped a few tears from her eyes again as she sat there, trying to make sure she still looked presentable. ”Joel… I… I didn’t know.” She said, looking back at him. If Julia had known that her brother was holding Joel’s sister as a bargaining chip… ”Joel, my brother is manipulative. He understands love just as well as I do, maybe even better, and he uses that to make people do what he wants.” She looked at him, wanting nothing more than to find some way to comfort him. ”I won’t let him hurt her, Joel. I promise.” She wasn’t quite sure how she was going to stop him, but she would find a way to keep Joel’s sister safe.
What could she do? Promise to stay alive for him? If it came down to it, Julia would lay her life down to make sure Joel was safe, and that meant keeping his sister safe. ”I’m not sure if it’ll be safe even if I do accept the offer.” She said, so many conflicting thoughts running through her head; not to mention the scenarios of what would happen if she turned her brother down. Would he hurt Joel or his sister? Would he do something to her to keep Joel under his thumb? ”If I help my brother he might not hurt me, but my mother? What if she finds out about this? She certainly won’t be proud of me for trying to overthrow her.” She was hysterical by this point, tears flowing down her face. After taking a few breaths Julia began to calm down and she looked back to Joel. ”I’ll think about his offer.” Her voice was wavering, ”But I promise that whatever happens I will find a way to help you. I’m not going to let Phobos go on manipulating people like this.” But what would she do? Charmspeak could help, but that would only make her more like Phobos. That might have even been a reason he wanted her to help him. Persuading people to join his cause would be that much easier then.
She managed a smile at his question, though his tone didn’t seem like he was joking. ”I guess I just like to drop myself into complicated situations.” She said, leaning her head onto his shoulder. ”But I could ask you the same question.”

Joel tried not to let it show how much seeing Julia cry affected him. He sucked in a deep breath and puffed out his chest a little tightening his jaw. He hated all of the trouble he was bringing into her life because of his decision to help Phobos. All he ever wanted to be was a hero, to his sister mostly and everyone else. Joel grew up not knowing he was a demigod but believing what he had read in comic books. Joel had to be the hero or the villain. He didn’t know how to be anything else.
At the idea of having a good relationship with his dad, Joel held back the urge to role his eyes. He didn’t expect the guy to stick around and go fishing...or whatever on the weekends. He just had to do this for his dad because it was about honor. They were blood but would never be family. The only thing that Joel was hoping for was a shred of pride in the son Triton had abandoned. He shook his head dismissing what Julia had said about love.
Glancing at her from the corner of his eye Joel saw her place her hands over her face. He frowned turning away again when she looked at him. “Yeah well, it’s not exactly the best way to start a conversation. Hello, I’m Joel Phobos is using my sister’s life to keep me in line so I better be a good boy or else she dies.” he said mockingly. The topic of Maggie was just infuriating him even more. He turned to face Julia again almost scowling at her. “I’m not stupid Julia, you think I didn’t figure that out?” the tone was a bit harsher than it should have been. Joel scoffed at Julia’s naivety. As heartfelt as it was and endearing Joel couldn’t deal with it in this situation. “What are you going to do Julia walk up to Phobos and ask him nicely to leave my sister alone?”
Joel sighed realizing that getting angry wasn’t going to help anything. He couldn’t take out his frustrations on Julia it was unfair. Scratching the back of his neck Joel tried to play things out in his head envisioning different scenarios. All of them ended in Phobos doing the worst thing possible, killing both Maggie and Julia while he looked on helpless to save them.
Sitting there on his knees Joel silently shook his head as Julia suggested she actually help Phobos. She was full out crying now and it added to the pile of guilt sitting in Joel’s stomach. He sat there listening to her go on not exactly sure what he could say to make it all better. Joel didn’t want to make broken promises about keeping her safe. It wasn’t like he didn’t want to protect her but Joel wasn’t sure if he could, not from Phobos. If he hadn’t met her everything would have been fine and he wouldn’t need to worry about her safety. Joel couldn’t imagine camp without her though. He was having a hard time imagining his life in general without her.
Joel relaxed slightly as her head rested on his shoulder. He took a deep steady breath and spoke in a soft voice hoping it would help to calm her. A small smile wavered on his face, “Yeah well, I wasn’t trying to be perfect. It’s just a gift.” He couldn’t keep the smile on his face. Joel slowly wrapped his arms around Julia and pulled her close. “We’ll find a way out of this, or not...what happens though I guess we’re going to go through it together.” NOTES::hope its alright. my muse died half way through WORD COUNT::612 SONG::BROKEN STRINGS

Julia sensed the changes in Joel’s mood, probably because he didn’t want her to see how her own mood affected him. What was it with boys? It was something that Julia never understood. Showing emotion was a good thing. And maybe it was an Aphrodite thing, she didn’t really know, but she picking up on emotions always came easy to her. But normally picking up on emotions didn’t tear her apart inside.
”If you had told me, I would have tried to find a way to help!” Preferably not one that involved her running into her brother and getting forced into helping him, but it was too late for that. Joel’s scoff was almost too much for her to handle. It felt like a dagger right through her heart. ”And now he’s doing the exact same thing to me, Joel.” If she messed up, Phobos could hurt Joel. Or Joel’s sister, which would hurt Joel as well. ”He’s not the only one who can manipulate people, Joel. Though frankly it might involve a little bit of asking nicely.” Phobos knew she could Charmspeak, so if that was the route she would take it would require a little bit more than just that, but she would figure it out.
She smiled when Joel relaxed, hoping he was starting to unwind at least a little. ”You’re a very gifted person then, Joel. It’s not fair.” She wished there was some way to keep the smile on his face. It lit everything up. Julia leaned into him as he pulled her closer to him, taking a deep breath. ”We will find a way out of this, Joel.” She said, though in her head she really wasn’t quite sure. Things didn’t look the brightest, but she wasn’t going to say something like that to Joel.
”Joel… No matter where this ends up, I just want you to know that I love you. All of this craziness aside, I wouldn’t want anything else.” And maybe, hopefully, they would be able to look back on all of this and say the same thing… Julia just wanted him to be happy, no matter what that meant.

Joel scoffed at the notion but he did take it to heart. This girl cared a lot about him more than he probably knew. Still it was for this that Joel didn’t want Julia involved with the wonder twins. He didn’t want to be involved with them but he was and there was no getting out once you were in. It was kind of like a mob if you twisted it and looked at it from a strange light but then not like the mob as these were Gods who basically answered to nobody.
Joel sighed, “How could I have told you Julia and risk you hating me? Risk anyone here finding out narking on me and well putting me in prison cause I’m basically a traitor.” He sat there for a moment his brows furrowed together, “Not that they have a prison or any kind of holding area. And I men I can’t be a traitor if I never knew them before right? That’s how it works isn’t it?” Details. He waved his hand dismissing the confusing thoughts.
Joel flushed a little around the ears, usually his ego would have loved the compliment and he would drink it in allowing his head to swell but coming from Julia it was almost embarrassing. “Gifted? Demigods usually are.” His way of saying thanks. Joel held Julia close to him. Beyond her, Maggie meant the most to him. He did all of this out of his own pride and ambition. Wasn’t that how it always started out? He was so stupid for listening but he would go through with one thing: bringing Percy Jackson down. That was a family matter. He didn’t want Julia in any of this, he didn’t want to risk her death and for it to fall on his conscious.
He ran his fingers through her hair. Joel had never cared for anyone more especially in such a short amount of time. He prayed silently in that moment to his father and to Aphrodite to watch out for Julia when he couldn’t and to forgive her for anything she may do. “I know.” Joel replied kissing her on the top of her head. “I wouldn’t want anyone else but you. I love you Julia, and no psycho God of Fear or of Terror is going to change that. I’d do anything to keep you safe. Just please don’t hate me when this is all over.” Joel couldn’t stand it if Julia were to hate him. He didn’t want to kill so much but he knew that with Phobos and Deimos at the command he would have to in order to protect Maggie and even Julia. He didn’t want her to see him as a monster. ”Do you think I would tell anyone about this and risk something bad happening to the person I love?” Julia raised an eyebrow. His question about prison was a good one… They didn’t really have prison here, did they? More like feeding the traitor to Cerberus. Or throwing them into Tartarus. Or… No. She wasn’t going to think like that. Because they weren’t going to do anything that would get them branded traitors. They would find a way out of it. ”R-right. Exactly.”
Perfection was his gift… And what? Charmspeaking was hers? But it wasn’t like Charmspeaking was going to be enough to stop her half-brothers. It might be one of the reasons Phobos wanted her on his side, maybe it made her more than just another body fighting for him, but she wasn’t even sure if Charmspeak worked on gods. She hadn’t exactly had the chance to try it on any of them before. ”Well if perfection is your gift you’re certainly more gifted than any Demigod I’ve ever met.” She leaned into him as he held her close, trying to think of something comforting to say to him. But she couldn’t help but feel like there was something he wasn’t telling her. That maybe this wasn’t only about his sister. But it wasn’t her place to ask if he didn’t want to tell her.
”I could never hate you, Joel Harbor.” She said, looking up at him. ”You won’t hate me either, right?” The scenarios of what she might have to do were running through her head. Would she be willing to Charmspeak him out of doing something if it came down to that? While he was praying to her mother and his father to keep them safe, Julia was silently asking Aphrodite why she did this to them. There had to be a reason, right? Or was this one of those times when her mother just wanted to see what trouble she could stir up with a couple? No. Julia refused to believe that. Aphrodite wouldn’t do that to one of her children, would she? ”Do the two of them show up together a lot? I met Phobos… But Deimos hasn’t said anything to me. At least not yet.” She couldn’t really say she was looking forward to meeting him.
