CRYPTOS VAN HELSING
Name::Cryptos van Helsing.
Nickname:: Crypt or Death Head.
Age:: 16.
Gender:: Male.
Species:: Demigod.
Olympian Parent:: Hades.
Years at Camp:: 1.
Claimed:: Yes.
Celebrity Claim: Garrett Hedlund as Murtagh from Eragon
Looks:: His hair is usually kept to a moderate cleanliness and he rarely has it cut. He only cuts it when it gets excessively long, which means he cuts it when the bangs reach down to his mouth. Otherwise, he simply lets it hang without styling it.
His cloths are simple. He wears black jeans with whatever t-shirt he finds suitable (usually a metal band t-shirt). He also keeps this one trench coat. It's pure black leather and reaches down to his ankles and the collar sticks up to the middle of his ears when it is pointed upward.
He can usually be seen wearing a black leather fedora. He also keeps his headphones, full sized ones, not earbuds, around his head most of the time. When they're not on his head, they're around his neck.
Cryptos stands at about 5'6" and weighs 112 lbs.
Personality::
Cryptos is an average teenager. Angst. Moodiness. Occasional laziness. Yep, the whole nine yards. He blocks things out by listening to music and relieves himself of anger by sword-fighting, though he's not stupid about it. On the contrary, he's quite intelligent and tries to avoid fights for the most part. This is not to say he won't accept a challenge, because he never backs down if he's challenge or directly confronted.
Not much really angers him. The one major thing that irks Crypt is when people look down on others. That and people being petty. That's what really annoys him. It causes him to get into arguments and fights, mainly because he steps into arguments that aren't his. Not because he's loyal to the people involved, but because it annoys him for the incessant to cut through the sound of his music.
There is one other thing though. He loves to read. Like, a lot. Most of his section of the cabin is filled with books, mostly in stacks since he had long filled his bookshelves. And he is very protective of his books, and his stuff in general, and goes into something akin to a berserk rage when someone steals or damages one.
Most of his books are horror or science fiction, like H.P. Lovecraft's Call of Cthulhu or Rick Yancey's The Monstrumologist and its sequel The Curse of the Wendigo. He also owns a copy of the Egyptian Book of the Dead and reads bits of it every now and then. The types of music he listens to are mostly heavy metal, though he listens to classic rock too. He has branched out a bit since he found out that he's a son of Hades and has begun listening to musics that surround dying, like a New Orleans funeral procession (mostly jazz music).
Family::
- Father: Gabriel Hortensia, M.D.
- Mother: Katherine Hortensia (maiden name: Katherine van Helsing), Mortician.
- Half-Brother: Stephen Hortensia, age 4.
History::
Katherine van Helsing was a German Mortician, constantly surrounded by death and such. She had recently put an ad out in the local paper for an assistant when she received a notice that someone had applied to the position. The man who did was dark and handsome and was kind all around. Time passed and the tarted dating.The day following the first night the two sleep together, the man disappears.
Katherine searched for the man. The local police put out a search for him even though they told her no record existed for the man in question. Months passed. Nine, in fact. Over that period of time Katherine discovered she was pregnant and at the end of the time Cryptos was born. Shortly thereafter, Katherine and her infant child move to Pennsylvania, America. She never told Cryptos this, but it was because she suspected strange things were going on around them like people showing up outside her windows and people watching her at work, with Cryptos there of course.
As Cryptos aged, he had a few run-ins with monsters.
At preschool, the teacher picked up Cryptos and thrust him against the wall, only to leave suddenly when a man appeared in the doorway. Everyone in the class said it was the "pwincipal," but Cryptos didn't think so (though honestly he didn't put much thought to it since he was only four). He and his mother moved shortly afterward to Avalon, Minnesota.
In fifth grade, a few older students showed up and started beating up on Cryptos. When he decided to stand up against them, the kids seemed to change form into single-eyed giants, but Cryptos stood his ground. He fought back, futilely, and was only saved when another student came by in the hallway, picked up Cryptos, and ran. The two quickly became friends shortly afterward.
It took some convincing, but Cryptos managed to get his mom to stay in Avalon. This was helped by the fact that she had met and started dating someone, though Cryptos admitted that he'd never call this guy "Dad." The two did get married toward the end of Cryptos's fifth grade year and had a child a few months later.
During the time surrounding the Battle of Manhattan, a lot happened for Cryptos. People that didn't look quite human followed him around all day and he got into fights more and more frequently with people he'd never seen before, and he knew most of the town the small town of Avalon. This all happened during his final year of middle school, 8th grade.
Then Cryptos started highschool. The first year was normal, until Cryptos got in a fight with a student and had to switch schools after that year. The following year was significantly less normal. Even on the first day, Crypt could tell things were right. Teachers glared at him, people ran headlong at him in the hallways without being corrected by teachers. Several classes were spent with everyone simply glaring at Cryptos and him feeling incredibly awkward. Upon one memorable trip to the bathroom, a teacher chased him through the hallway until the guy tripped and Cryptos got away. Realizing that he, uh, "no longer needed to use the bathroom," Crypt called home from the office and that ended his day.
The following day seemed more "normal." No one stared directly at him or charged at him. He felt like everything was going fine. That was until he saw his friend getting attacked by what appeared to be incredibly hairy jocks. When he confronted them, the four jocks turned around and revealed wolf-like faces with incredible canines, the teeth, not dogs.
When Cryptos asked where he could get some silver to slay the werewolves, one of the four leaped at him and said they weren't "werewolves" but were "Lycanthropes." Falling back and lifting his arm to shield himself, the ground moved too. It made a curved dome over Cryptos. When he noticed this, he decided to try something. He tried to impose his will on the ground beneath the other three wolf-men. As he felt it, he flicked his three fingers up and three spires erupted from the ground and skewered the wolf men. The last one, the one who had attacked Cryptos, ran off in fear.
Once all the action was over, Cryptos talked to his friend, who apparently was a satyr, a goat-man. He told Cryptos that they needed to leave, immdiately. They ran to the train station and purchased tickets with what little money they had. Several hundred miles and several days later, the group managed to get to Long Island, New York at Camp Half-Blood. Cryptos made sure to immediately mail his mom what had happened, the fact that he was ok, and the general facts as he understood them, like monsters, gods, and all that jazz.
Cryptos's claiming occurred on the first night of his saying at camp. They were all sitting at dinner and eating, him with the Hermes cabin since he wasn't claimed yet. He was laughing and eating with them when suddenly every quieted down and stared at him. He looked around, trying to figure out what happened when someone pointed above him. Sure enough, above him floated the symbol of Hades, designating him as a Son of Hades. That got him a good bit of attention for the next week or so, but it died down after a while.
A year has passed since then. Cryptos has stayed at camp the whole time, training to use his powers more effectively. Nothing major has happened for him as of yet.

Crypt entered the camp arena. The sand underfoot, Crypt took a look around. He noticed that only a few people were there. All of them were Ares children, and none of them were Crypt's friends. He decided that it would be smarter to practice alone.
Since all the dummies were being used, he had to set up his own. He set to work and spent about ten minutes setting up three dummies, fully equipped with shields. Once he finished his set up and stepped back to admire his work, two of the Ares boys tackled them and laughed it up.
"What the hell guys? I just spent like the last ten minutes setting up those dummies to fight," he complained, not really wanting to fight. He had come out here to practice, not pick a fight.
"Guess you'll have to do it again," said one of the two. The other simply laughed.
Again he set up the three dummies, luckily they weren't damaged, but he had a plan this time, anticipating another tackle. As soon as he stepped back to admire his work, the two came back to assail the dummies yet again. Unfortunately they didn't expect for the dummies not to be there, so they crashed into the wall of the arena. The dummies weren't here because Cryptos had pulled the ground of the way by using his Demigod powers, causing the dummies to fall out of the way.
Now it was Crypt's turn to laugh. The two Ares kids were stumbling their way back, their brains addled by their impact with the wall. They really looked quite foolish and even the other kids in the arena were laughing. The laughter became louder when one of the two fell over into the other, and both went down. Unfortunately, the two came back to their senses after that. Seeing it as unintelligent to stay and get double-teamed, Cryptos took his opportunity to go to lunch.
