1-- It’s Not Easy To Be Me
If you asked two months ago if I believed in Angels and Lucifer and Hell, I would have told you to shove it. I would presently tell you the same thing but only because I now know it all to be true. Unlike most people who find religion during near death experiences I found my “religion” while I was at a frat house and after several games of Beer Pong. Yeah, my freshmen year at college was going great until I discovered that I was really some chump with Angel blood running through my veins. In one night my life was proverbially flipped upside down after I was introduced to Hadraniel, I decided to call her Harper. I couldn’t spell the name let alone pronounce it.
I was only in college for a month before I was awakened...awoken. Whatever. I guess that was the end of my college carrier. Not much time for schoolbooks and exams when I have to worry about saving the world from Lucifer and his merry little band of Fallen Angels. You see, every seven centuries Lucifer makes an attempt to get his hands on God’s throne. You think he’d give up after a few millennia of failed successes. Got to hand it to the guy, he’s persistent. Anyway, every seven centuries there are seven lucky (or maybe not) people born with honest to God Angel blood inside of them. These Charges, as we have come to be called, are the ones who are supposed to basically cock block Lucifer’s army from making it to Heaven. There is this all out battle that takes place on Earth, kind of like the apocalypse.
My name is Gavin Sawyer and I’m one of those gifted people. Seven Charges trained by seven Angels of the Lord or AotL’s for short. I’ve been in training mode the last two months meeting and greeting the others who will join me in the heat of battle. Trouble is, the Angels haven’t a clue when Lucifer is going to make his full out attack. Until then we just have to stop any rouge Fallen who try to disrupt peace or what not. Basically I’m some kind of angelic super hero. I’d relish in the fact that every little boys dream come true is to be a freaking superhero if it weren’t for the annoying AotL’s breathing down my neck 24/7. I’m stuck at Angelic Superhero boot camp and I am two harp strings away from taking a flying leap into Hell to root for the other team.
This Angel Boot Camp, ABC for short (aren’t we a clever batch of half angels?), is located in the middle of the Sahara Desert. Why the Sahara? I’ll be sure to let you know once I figure it out. We’re located in some unseen biodome kind of thing...I’m not the best when it comes to describing places. All I know is that it’s air-conditioned and doesn’t have cable. There are seven levels and in the basement are the sleeping quarters. Attached to the side of the levels is a dome that stretches seemingly infinitely into the sky. It’s used for flight training. Haven’t reached that yet.
On each level of the invisi-building are training rooms that are suited for each of our needs. Each Charge has a special area of expertise. There is Fire, Water, Air, Earth, Ice, Dark, and Light. I got landed with light. I was hoping for Fire so I could give myself a cool super hero name like Pyro from X-men. You don’t get to pick and choose though; I was born with the power of Light. The only redeeming factor is that light encompasses the ability to use lightning. I’m working on a nickname right now I’m on Static Spark. It’s kind of lame but it’s a work in progress. Level 1 is a basic training room. I’ve been stuck there for the last two months...
“Try again, focus this time.” Harper said with an edge to her voice.
She was tired of being here and so was I. My fingers curved and I did my best to summon the energy that I could feel budding just beneath the tips. Like the last two hundred attempts my finger’s sparked resembling a sparkler momentarily before fizzing out. I sighed my head starting to hurt from the concentrating.
“And again.” Harper said, her chocolate brown eyes focusing on anything but my failure. I knew I wasn’t what she had expected or wanted in a Charge. I was sarcastic, a little selfish, and I didn’t play well with others. That was written on my grade card at school in kindergarden. Nothing really changed. But because I knew this was exactly who I was there was no way I was gonna change for some AotL.
I shook my hands out and glared at her. She was standing a few feet away her arms folded across her chest. Her complexion was perfect and her hair was long matching her eyes, and in short she was hot. Of course she was a freaking Angel and I knew when to cut my losses, besides she got on my nerves too much for me to like her.
“I’ve been at this for two hours now. My fingers are starting to hurt and I think I popped a blood vessel in my eye about fifteen minutes back.”
“Gavin, we will be at this until you can get it right. The others are able to create a simple energy ball. It is the most efficient weapon in an Angel’s arsenal. You can’t expect to master your ability if you cannot pass this first step of training.”
“Yeah well, the others have been at this longer than I have. Maybe you snatched up the wrong guy two months back.” I grumbled turning my back on her. I went over to grab my water bottle.
“As hopeful as I might be that would be impossible.” She replied in a matter of fact tone. Harper was always so precise with whatever she said. Though she knew how to throw out a few good jabs both verbally and physically. That was another story I don’t care to relive.
“Can we call it day on this energy ball crap?”
I turned back to face her. She glared at me but I knew she would cave because I could see impaitnece in her eyes. After a moment she sighed and turned her nose up walking toward the exit.
“Tomorrow we will be training for five hours instead of the usual three in order to make up for loss time today.”
“What?”
She left without another word. Why did I get stuck with her?******
“I told you, touch my pillow again and I will personally smother you with it!”
That was what I walked into back in the Bunks. Natalie, a beautiful Asian goddess with a fiery temper was threatening another one of the Charges, Cameron. It was rather fitting that her special ability was Fire. Of course I valued my teeth enough not to say anything to her about it. I wasn’t afraid of her but I really didn’t want to be responsible for punching a girl even after she hit me first.
She tossed the pillow back onto her bunk. The guy Cameron held his hands up in surrender. “It was laying on the floor and I picked it up for you. You’re welcome.”
“Did you ever think that may be I wanted it there?” She snapped.
He glared, his stupid baby blue eyes trying to make an attempt to break through Natalie’s tough exterior. Good luck pal. “My mistake, next time I will let it go.”
Cameron was usually calm and collected and charming as a freaking prince. It was annoying. He had the ability of Water; the irony of the two was obvious. If Natalie wasn’t such a flat out bitch I’d be willing to give her a chance with me. She was only a year older and again totally hot. But like Harper her personality kept me from liking her too much.
Cameron winked at Natalie and turned. I saw tiny flames ignite in Natalie’s eyes but didn’t do anything to stop her.
“Wink again and you’ll lose your eyelids!” she screamed throwing her hand outward to Cameron. With catlike reflexes he turned and dodged the flame that was sent his way. It landed on my bed. Go figure.
“Woah!” I rushed forward to put out my smoldering blanket. Cameron scoffed and flicked his fingers at the blanket. A jet of crystal clear water sprayed from his fingers soaking my blanket yet preventing the fire from spreading. “I don’t know if I should thank you or just skip the formalities and punch you.”
Cameron didn’t reply, he moved over to his bunk a few down from mine.
“Jerk.” I mumbled.
“Is your blanket okay Gavin?” It was Morgan, the other equally hot Charge who had a hint of an Irish accent. I glanced up at her and shrugged. She was able to control Earth and was probably the nicest Charge here. The others often called her Mother Nature. I didn’t cause I could tell that it bothered her even if Morgan was too shy to say anything.
“Yeah it’ll be fine.” I replied sitting down on a part that wasn’t wet.
She stood awkwardly with her hands folded behind her back. I scooted back making room for her she smiled and sat gingerly.
“Shouldn’t you be training still?” she asked with concern. I loved any chance to talk with her if not solely for her accent.
“Got done early, Harper said I was making progress.” A lie.
“God I sure hope so.” Natalie scoffed from her bunk. “You’re the only one who hasn’t mastered the energy ball. It’s kind of pathetic.”
Natalie wasn’t mean to everyone all the time. Actually she could be pretty cool but when she was in a bad mood it didn’t matter where you previously stood with her, you would always be that tiny worm on the hook ready for her to eat.
“Don’t listen to her Gavin.” Morgan said placing her hand on my leg. I starred at her hand trying not to turn red. “I’m sure you’ll be up to speed in no time. The Angels say that you’re the most important of all of us.”
I swallowed past the lump in my throat. “Yeah, don’t remind me.”
Morgan stood and left. I wish she had stayed. The other three must have been off in training still. I was kind of glad. Everything was a little more peaceful without all of us in a single room together. We were supposed to be this army but half of us couldn’t stand each other. I had only been here two months, the last to awaken. The others had been here from four to six months. After two months I was ready to go crazy I couldn’t imagine six months.*****
One thing I have come to somewhat enjoy was group training. Mostly because it involved the AotL’s showing us how things were done. I had to admit it was pretty awesome to see them in action. When they’re standing in front of you they hide their wings but in the air there isn’t a sight better than seeing the twenty-foot wingspan of an angel. We would never have wings just the ability to fly without them. I was cool with that made us more of super heroes anyway.
The only thing I didn’t like about group sessions was the fact that I was always left out when it came to showing where we stood in our training after each week. Natalie was almost to level where she could start flying lessons, and Cameron had mastered the energy ball four days after arriving. What the Hell was wrong with me then? Two months and all I managed to do were creating sparks and put up a weak ass barrier. Everybody else was already on their ability training. Some Charge I was.
Ariel stood in front of us all. He had short dark hair and that movie star look. He was Cameron’s Angel and usually in charge of the group sessions. He often wore a black trench coat with a dark plain t and jeans. Angels were kings of fashion.
“As you all know, next week we will be starting flight training. It will be a long process and some of you may have an advantage over others.” He glanced to Ryan.
Ryan was just as bad if not worse than Natalie. His temper was unmatched and he pretty much hated everyone all the time. The only one he didn’t fight with or give the cold shoulder to was his angel Chasan mainly because the two were exactly alike. Chasan had a God complex that even for an Angel needed to be knocked down a peg or two. Ryan controlled Air and he was already in the early stages of flight since he was able to manipulate air currents. That was pretty awesome.
Ariel licked his lips and continued. “And I know some of you are not quite...up to level yet but do no get discouraged, you will just have to train harder.”
I looked over to Harper; she stood in line a thin smile on her face. She knew as well as I that Ariel was referring to us or rather me. I wasn’t doing it on purpose and I wondered for a moment if she knew that. I felt a tiny bit or remorse for her hoping that my lack of skill didn’t reflect on her Angel teaching abilities. It wasn’t her fault that I just generally sucked.
“At the end of the week we will be taking you all back to civilization to do some patrol. Since you have a grasp on your abilities and basic Angel powers it is time for some fieldwork. As you are still in training and cannot fly, your Angel will accompany you. In the future once you have mastered flight you will be allowed frequent trips to civilization to patrol for Fallen. Do not think of these trips as a vacation, they are the exact opposite. Out there you will be exposed and easy targets for the Fallen. They will be able to sense you so you will have to be on guard.”
I didn’t really care what Ariel had to say about the Fallen all I heard was that we were going to get out of ABC and out into the land of fried food and greasy burgers. But I knew the trip would be out of the question for me if I couldn’t handle producing a single energy ball.
“With that, why not let Annaliese and Shalgiel go first in the individual demonstrations.” Airel concluded. He gestured to the only other female Angel besides Harper, Shalgiel. She was platinum blonde with a serious expression. Her Charge was Annaliese, the youngest of all of us only thirteen. She didn’t speak much to anyone except her Angel. To be honest Annaliese kind of freaked me out. She was good at her ability of controlling ice. Even the kid was better at being a Charge than me.
While she got in front of us to perform some kind of spectacular ice show my eyes drifted over to Harper. She sat off to the side with the other AotLs. Over the last two months I was getting good at reading her expressions. For an Angel she was pretty easy to read. I could tell she was worried about when our turn came about. I hadn’t progressed any. More feelings of guilt racked up but I forced them back. Not my fault they snatched up the defective Charge.
A tap on my shoulder and I jarred from my thoughts. I glanced back to see it was Morgan. I tried not to turn red. She was the only girl I had to fight to keep from blushing around. It was embarrassing.
“Hey.” she whispered. “I can’t wait to see what you can do today.”
My stomach wrapped in a knot. I scoffed a little and grinned, I opened my mouth to respond but Ryan piped up beside me.
“It’ll be the same as last time, absolutely nothing.” His eyes remained forward and on Annaliese who was now creating a tall pillar of ice about ten feet tall. Last week she had been able to create one that was half that size. She was progressing.
I shot a look at Ryan but bit my tongue to keep from going off on him. I knew I shouldn’t have taken it personally, no one took what Ryan said to heart but how could I not take it personally when it was true?
“Ignore him.” Cameron said from my right. “I’m sure you you’ve made progress.”
I couldn’t tell if he was being sarcastic or not. We still didn’t get along a whole lot. His charming ways annoyed the crap out of me, especially since he always seemed to be after Morgan.
“Ryan’s always negative. You’ll be fine!” This time it was Miles, the fifteen-year-old Charge who controlled Darkness. And contrary to popular belief he was actually pretty cool and not at all a jerk. I liked him a lot better than Ryan or Cameron that was for sure.
“Shut up all of you.” Natalie snapped in a harsh whisper.
The AotLs were looking in our direction with severe expressions. Harper singled me out and gave her death glare. I sulked and focused back on Shalgiel and Annaliese. I hadn’t even done anything; they were the ones who were talking.
I was the second to last to go. And when I stood in front of the others I felt my hands begin to sweat. Harper was beside me her presence not making the situation any better. She was just as nervous as I was.
“Alright well, I’ve still been working on creating an energy ball. And well...” I looked to Harper for some help. She just batted her eyes and nodded for me to proceed.
I took a deep breath and prayed to God that by some miracle I could perform a perfect energy ball here and now. I curved my fingers focused my mind, I could feel the pressure and energy building up under the tips. They started to glow faintly. But it was taking much too long. By now the other Charges could have created two or three energy balls. It was second nature and here I stood like a moron unable to create one.
I heard a slight snicker from the crowd. It was Ryan again. I glared at him.
“Alright, you can sit down Gavin.” Ariel said with disappointment heavy in his voice.
No. I wasn’t going to let this go, not now. I stayed put forcing all of my energy to my hands.
“Gavin, I said take a seat.” Ariel said.
“Gavin, don’t worry about it.” Harper was saying next to me but I didn’t want to hear it. She reached out and put her hand on my shoulder and just then I felt something surge through my body. She must have felt it too because she jumped back as if being shocked. We stared at one another for a moment.
“Sit down already Fail Boy.” Ryan called out, “Some of us actually have things to show others.”
“That is it!” I barked. “I am tired of you harping on people all the time, mostly me!”
I wasn’t sure where the rage had come from but I was beside Ryan towering over him. He got to his feet a look of murder in his eyes. “You’re pretty brave for a Charge with no powers.”
“You’re pretty arrogant for a guy about to get his ass kicked.”
“That’s enough—“ Ariel raised his voice but Harper flung out her hand to silence him.
“No wait.”
They watched us, everyone did. I guess she wanted to see me get my ass kicked cause in all honesty I was the one who didn’t have any powers. Ryan could beat me six ways from Sunday if he wanted to, and I was pretty sure he did.
“Go on then, show me how you’re going to kick my ass.” Ryan pushed his hands toward me and in doing so summoned a batch of air to knock me square on my hindquarters. I sat up rubbing lower back my eyes still in a dead lock stare on Ryan. I stood up my body feeling like it might explode. There was so much energy bubbling under my skin and mixed with anger it was a dangerous combination.
“Just what I thought, you’re a waste of time. I bet you’ll be the first to be picked off by Lucifer and the fallen.” Ryan scoffed and unrolled his sleeves. “Leave saving Earth and Heaven to the real heroes, failure.”
That did it. “Don’t ever call me a failure.” Without a second thought my hands worked together and I shoved them in Ryan’s direction. A large ball of electric blue light shot forth. Ryan’s eyes grew to the size of walnuts and at the last moment he raised a protective shield. The force of the energy ball had still managed to force him backward.
He was furious. I was in awe. What the hell had just happened? Almost foaming at the mouth Ryan lunged forward but Chasan intercepted him. I blinked. Sweat dripped from my brow. I looked down at my hands they were warm and still glowing slightly. Everyone had the same expression, that kind of “what the hell did we just witness?” kind of expression. I was pretty sure I was wearing the same one.
Suddenly my head felt light and I wavered on my feet. Harper was next to me in an instant supporting me up. When we made contact this time there was no energy surge or static shock feeling. She just felt soft and nice. My knees buckled and I fell into her. She was stronger than she looked being able to hold me up all on her own. Then again she was an Angel.
My head was all foggy and my vision blurred. “What...”
“Ssh.” she cooed in my ear. “Just relax.”
“What in the name of Lucifer was that?” I heard Cameron say. His voice was distorted but I could tell it was him.
“I don’t know it didn’t look like any energy ball I’ve made.” Natalie replied.
“Do you think he’s going to be okay?” Morgan voiced her concern.
“Ariel, did you see?” It was Uriel, Natalie’s Angel this time. He was hovering around me like the other Angels.
“Yes, I did.” Ariel replied almost grimly.
My head began to throb and I couldn’t take it anymore. I closed my eyes and buried my head into Harper’s shoulder. She smelled nice. The scent of vanilla and citrus sent me drifting off to sleep.
