 Heaven knows I could really use a friend…Charlie sat hunched-over in the strawberry fields, his faithful cat companion, Bruno, attempting to catch a cricket a little ways off, but never straying too far from him. Charlie was not feeling well. Physically, he was fine, but mentally he was screaming in torment. He’d been teased yet again by some of the other campers his age, even one of the older ones, for his inability to control himself, and for his lack of skills when it came to the bow and arrow. It wasn’t as though he wasn’t used to the usual teasing, but today it seemed particularly bad. He brushed some of the dirt off his shorts before pulling his knees up close to him and resting his forehead on them. A few tears escaped despite his efforts to keep them at bay.
Why were people so mean? He was trying his best. He really was. What would his dad have said? His dad had always thought so highly of him, even when he couldn’t do it. He was always there with a smile. Charlie wondered mildly if maybe he could have been frozen with that kind smile for the rest of eternity when he had been killed. It wasn’t likely, he knew, but maybe the gods had granted him mercy and given him an easy end at least. The thoughts brought back too horrible memories of that day he had learned of his father’s fate and was forced to leave his still-hysterical step-mother and stunned and confused step-sister. He wondered if he would ever see them again, but so far he wasn’t so sure. It had been struggle enough for his father, a demigod himself, to handle him, but his poor step-mother and step-sister were regular mortals. They didn’t deserve the trouble. The memory of his gone father and never seeing his family again, though, didn’t help the depression.
He hugged his legs all the closer and a fresh wave of tears streamed out of his eyes to soak his knees and his small body quaked slightly with the force of his grief. In response to his outburst, though without his bidding, half a dozen or so strawberries around him exploded in little colorful fireworks. That was enough to catch his attention and he looked up, sniffling and wiping his nose as the last embers of the mini magic fireworks show fell harmlessly to the ground. Bruno, also curious of the magic show, though by no means not used to it by now, wandered back over to see what was going on. After pausing to regard Charlie, he padded up and bumped him on the side as if reassuring him it would all be okay. Charlie made and effort at a smile and pet the cat. “Thanks, Bruno.” He looked back to the slightly-burnt stems of the now gone strawberries before speaking again. “Maybe someday I’ll take you back to meet mom and Helen. How does that sound, Bruno?” In answer, the cat merely bumped him again and purred, which was a fine enough answer for Charlie.
He looked back over the plants and thought of what it must have looked like when his father had been at Camp here, tending the fields as the Demeter kids did now days too. He reached out and took one of the damaged stems between his fingers and muttered, “I’m sorry, dad. I didn’t mean to. I’ll do better.” A single tear escaped his eye at the thought that he’d damaged his father’s legacy here, but at least he managed to keep all the rest from falling too. Bruno, however, decided Jonathan’s legacy made a nice little afternoon snack.  Nathan had spent most of his morning trying to figure out what had gone wrong with his latest invention, a set of high powered inline skates. His backside still hurt from the test run. There were still pieces of hay in his hair that he was picking at. Nathan had decided to try it in the stables, which turned out to be both a good idea and a bad one. He crashed into a pile of hay. It softened the crash making the idea a partial success. However, Nathan didn’t account for their to be Pegasus....business within the hay. After rinsing his face in the lake much to the displeasure of the water nymphs, Nathan headed back to the stables to grab his skates and try to pick up what was left of his dignity.
“Maybe pieces of hay got clogged up in the gears.” Nathan muttered flicking a piece of hay with his index finger and thumb. Ruffling his hair to get the remaining bits of hay the lake didn’t wash out he sighed stopping just before the stables. For some reason or other Nathan had glanced off to the opposite direction toward Strawberry Fields. Now, Nathan was never a fan of strawberries or any kind of fruit that had the word berry...actually Nathan had never been a fan of fruit in general. So there would have to be a reason for him to ditch what he was doing to go wander over into the fields. Call it demigod sight, or maybe the kid stuck out like a sore thumb amongst the strawberry bushes, but Nathan could make out another camper. Nathan’s brow creased. And with enough curiosity to kill an army of cats, Nathan strolled off into the field of disgusting fruit.
Speaking of cats, Nathan did a double take when he saw the young camper with a cat as a companion. Nathan hadn’t realized they were allowed to bring pets like Hogwarts. The camper was somewhat familiar not someone Nathan had bothered before. Half way over Nathan realized it was that young boy from the Hecate cabin. So he wasn’t so far off from Hogwarts. Nathan chuckled to himself. He strutted over to the kid with a big dumb grin on his face but he stopped at seeing the tear run down his cheek. Crap. Nathan wasn’t good with situations like this. It was too late to turn around and high tail it out of there. Nathan cursed to himself and smiled at the kid.
“Hey there Harry Potter, how’s it hanging?” He asked with a loud optimistic tone. Nathan added another goofy grin at the Hecate kid. He vaguely knew what kids of Hecate were capable of and Nathan only wished he had those abilities. He’d be the most badass demigod/wizard around. Nathan quickly imagined himself firing lightning bolts from his hands, and sending his enemies flying into the air. Of course, Nathan didn’t have archenemies so he picked the Ares cabin instead. It was close enough.
“Like the cat.” Nathan added nodding to the small furry creature. “I’d rather have a dragon like the one they have up on the hill, but I bet Chiron would be against it.” Nathan was trying to make small talk that wouldn’t lead him to having to ask what was wrong with the kid. “Uhh, I’m Nathan by the way. Hephaestus cabin.” Nathan rocked back and forth on his feet. “I can just leave if you want me to.” WORD COUNT//580

Charlie looked around when he heard a voice and immediately chastised himself for not having heard the other demigod sooner. Hadn’t his dad taught him the importance of being aware of one’s surroundings in all his little Survival For Demigods home classes? He tilted his head slightly at the introduction. “Harry Potter?” He couldn’t really say he knew where that name came from or why this boy was confusing him with him. He opened his mouth to correct him when his mind, which he hadn’t even realized was working on the question still, latched on to something. “Oh wait, that’s that book, isn’t it? I saw someone at school reading it, but I never read it before. But anyway, my name is actually Charlie.” He wiped at his face, getting rid of the last trace of the tears save for slightly red eyes. Be called after a book he didn’t know had effectively distracted him. He just hoped it wasn’t another form of bullying… again.
He smiled down at Bruno and back up at the older boy. “His name is Bruno. I found him in the forest. Or really, he found me. And he’s been living with me in my cabin ever since.” He paused in his long spiel to think about the older boy’s words. “A dragon? How would it fit in your cabin?” That was half the fun of having a little pet was having it curl up in bed with you, or follow you around. A little awkwardly, Charlie stood up and brushed the dirt off his shorts as best he could, leaving a good few smudges that would take actual soap and water to fix.
“Hi, Nathan. You don’t have to go. Unless you want to.” He paused when he finally noticed what Nathan was holding, and pointed at the straw and dirt-caked skates. “Are those skates? Did you go skating? And why is there a piece of hay one of them?” There was no doubt that Charlie was a curious one and, as his depression was quickly shifting into hyper state, it seemed to leave his usual shyness behind in a cloud of emotional dust.  The kid had never heard of Harry Potter, or knew enough about it to get the reference. The smile on Nathan’s face as his clever nickname failed. He pursed his lips and adverted his eyes for a second. “Right, memo to self no calling him The Boy Who Lived.” Nathan cleared his throat and smirked at the son of Hecate named Charlie. Nathan tried to think of a nickname but was feeling a little discouraged after his first attempt.
Boy, this kid was a little slow on the uptake wasn’t he? Nathan’s brow furrowed as Charlie asked how the dragon would fit into his cabin. He had to remember that this kid was still kinda young and a little bit than a more naïve apparently. Nathan chuckled at this and shrugged his shoulder and made another joke to go along with it. “Simple, I’d create a miniaturization ray. Shrink it up and BAM, pocket sized fire breathing dragon. I’d name him…Smaug. Long story behind that, don’t ask. More things you probably won’t understand.”
Nathan had thought about leaving, he was never good around kids so much. He shrugged his shoulders and remained where he stood. Charlie didn’t seem like a bad kid, but he was supposed to have some pretty epically special awesome demigod powers being the son of Hecate and all. He kinda wished for a moment that he had super awesome powers. Building basically anything from whatever spare parts were laying about and being able to understand technology was pretty cool. But Nathan wanted to be able to make things float and junk or explode things with his mind. Now that would be an awesome demigod power. Nathan would have no choice but to become a super hero with abilities like that. Some demigods were just blessed with cooler powers than others. Again, Nathan wasn’t dissing his dad in any respect it was just a thought that crossed his mind momentarily.
Nathan blinked bringing his ADHD mind back into the present. He saw Charlie pointing at the skates Nathan had almost forgot he was holding. “Oh, right.” he said staring down at the skates like he had never seen them before. “Just a project I’ve been working on. It’s no big deal, just some high powered skates. Like rocket skates I suppose.” Nathan looked back up to Charlie after picking the piece of straw off. “Yeeaaah. Well, I never said they were completed…or successful….or safe.” WORD COUNT//407
