I really need to stop posting stories I never finish. But this one is dffierent...maybe. Anyway its not a Prophecies crossover and is actually related to the Doctor Who/Torchwood universe. It has original characters and I am excited for this story over all. Enjoy...possibly. Not sure if you guys will be into it. I don't know...
oh this is also the first draft of the first chapter, and I may go back and revise information and of course fix grammar or typos later on.
Chapter One
ESCAPE THROUGH TIME
ESCAPE THROUGH TIME
Hailey sprinted across the lawn going as fast as he legs could carry her. Her long golden hair whipped around her face as she ran, making it almost impossible to see at times. She fumbled with the wrist strap, struggling to get it around her wrist securely. Feet pounding the ground echoed behind her. She didn’t dare look back for fear of tripping. They were after her that much she knew but Hailey didn’t need to know how many. Even one was too much. The clicking of their sonic laser alarmed her though. Hailey finally managed to the device around her wrist, now she just had to input the right coordinates. Of course Hailey had no idea where or when she was going to go. She just had to vanish before they killed her.
Blood pulsed in her ears and Hailey forced herself to run faster. Her lungs burned and her heart felt as if it were going to burst.
“Captain says shoot to kill!” a man shouted. “Fire at will!”
Hailey pressed a few random buttons and finally glanced back just as the sound of the weapons fired off. Her eyes widened in fear. She slammed her hand down on the device and shut her eyes continuing to run. And in a shimmering flash Hailey was gone before the attacks hit her.
“Damn it.” Curse one of the men. The small horde of men slowed to a halt. “McNaibor isn’t going to like this.” He pressed a button on his wrist device and took a deep breath. “Sir, the girl got away?”
“What?” roared a voice from the other end “How could you let her escape? Why are you talking to me, find her now or I you will be the next one on the extermination list.”
The man swallowed and glanced around to the others who were hearing the conversation. He nodded looking fearful for his life. “Y-yes sir.”
Traveling through time and space was the most uncomfortable feeling but Hailey was already in pain from running for her life. When she opened her eyes she was in a different location and more than likely a different time. She still had the momentum of running and it took her a minute to realize that no one was following her and that she was probably safe. Hailey glanced back once more to make sure she was alone. It was a mistake though, because a split second later Hailey collided with something solid. A wall?
Hailey bounced back and tumbled to the ground. She rolled over on her back and lay panting staring skyward.
“Woah, are you okay?” a male voice asked generally concerned. Hailey’s vision crossed for a moment. She shut her eyes hoping the spinning feeling would stop.
“I’m fine.” She groaned.
“Yeah, sure you are.” The voice replied with thick sarcasm.
Hailey opened her eyes. She had collided with the young man who was presently standing over her. He had dark brown nearly black hair with brilliant green eyes. She blinked and stared for a moment. He smiled at her.
“Still alive down there?” he asked with a British accent. So she was in Britain.
“I’m not quite sure.” Hailey replied trying to sit up. The man extended a helping hand to her.
“Here let me help you. I’m Sutton by the way.” He said taking Hailey’s hand. She rubbed her head, her vision still a little blurry.
“H-Hailey.” She replied with difficulty.
Sutton pulled Hailey to her feet. She wobbled but he was there to steady her.
“Do you make a habit of literally running into every guy you meet?”
Hailey was still out of it and extremely tired from running for her life to really pay attention to the charm in Sutton’s voice. She just shook her head. Sutton didn’t take his hands off from her knowing that he was really the only thing keeping her standing.
With a little less tongue and cheek Sutton watched her with concern and asked, “Are you sure you’re alright?”
“Yes. I’m just a little tired that’s all.” Hailey tried to take a step but her vision quickly turned black and she slumped into unconsciousness.******
“Let me get this straight. You allowed a twenty-year old girl, not even a Time Agent slip from your grasp?”
The three other Time Agents in the room hung their heads and waited silently and still. McNaibor stood with his back to them staring out the window of his office on the top floor of the facility. He had worked hard to get to where he was. And if he wanted to secure his spot as the head of the Time Agency he needed that girl dead. Hearing that Hailey Riley had escaped through time made him furious. The anger didn’t show in a clear expression on his face.
When no one responded McNaibor turned to look over his shoulder. He sneered at them. He faced them. “Well?”
The man on the far right spoke up. He lifted his head, “Sir, she stole her father’s Vortex Manipulator and vanished through time.”
“I don’t care if she had a ruddy TARDIS how could you have let it happen? Seven trained men armed with Sonic Blasters, failed to apprehend one girl. You are a disgrace to the Time Agency.” McNaibor pressed a small red button hidden under his desk. A minute later the door opened and in came two rather scrawny looking Time Agents. Both had dark hair and almost looked like they could be twins. They wore no expression on their faces.
McNaibor didn’t acknowledge them he scratched his chin and gave a shrug. “Your superiors were already taken care of.”
“Sir?”
“Your service was greatly appreciated however I feel like we are going in different directions. I am afraid you are all terminated from the Agency.” McNaibor turned his back again cold and distant. He didn’t need to watch to make sure the job got done properly. He blocked out the screams and the sounds of the gun blasts. McNaibor smirked cruelly as he gazed out the window at what would soon be his empire.
When the sounds of death ceased McNaibor cleared his throat. “Thank you boys, that will be all. Oh, and be sure to send Hammer and Bevell after the girl. I can trust them to get the job done.” McNaibor glanced at the bloody splatter that had made its way to the window. He considered it with an upturned nose. “Get this cleaned up.”******
Hailey woke to the scent of violets and tomatoes. It was an odd combination but the smell of tomatoes made her hungry. The scent was also followed by something being fried or grilled. Her stomach grumbled. Hailey opened her eyes. She was tucked into a bed in some room that looked like a train had gone through it. Articles of clothing were flung in every direction, the walls were covered with posters of what Hailey had to assume were musical groups, empty bottles and can lay about and while it looked like the room should smell foul it just smelled of violets.
There was a tiny rap on the door before Sutton poked his head inside. He beamed at her and stepped inside. He was holding a tray complete with a bowl of soup and grilled cheese. Hailey raised a brow at him as he came over to the bed.
“I see you’re awake. I made you some food, figured you’d be hungry. It’s tomato soup and grilled cheese.” Sutton pointed to each of the food items as if Hailey couldn’t have figured out which was which. He set the tray at the foot of the bed and stood awkwardly with his hands slid into the pockets of his skinny jeans.
“Thanks.” Hailey replied just as awkwardly. “Where am I exactly?”
“Oh, my flat. You kind of passed out so I brought you back here to my place and laid you in my bed. Yeah, it sounds more creepy than it really is.” Sutton flushed, he didn’t realize how insane the entire situation sounded until he said it out loud.
Hailey managed a chuckle, “Right, cause waking up in the bed of a complete stranger who made me tomato soup is the furthest thing from creepy. But really, thank you.”
She reached for the soup. Sutton nodded, “You’re American. I mean, you sound American anyway.”
“I am.” Hailey didn’t want to play twenty questions, especially since she wasn’t from this time period. The less this guy knew the better off they both were. Hailey nibbled on the grilled cheese, it was partially burnt. But it was sweet of him to go through all of this trouble.
Sutton sighed and sat down on the edge of the bed and stared at Hailey expectantly. She recoiled a little feeling uncomfortable being watched. “What?” she asked with edge to her voice.
“Sorry, I was—you’re a bit of an enigma right now. I mean, who or what were you running from exactly? I’m fine by the way, no harm done. You didn’t bruise this body a bit.” He teased her.
His flattery or charm was becoming a bit annoying to Hailey. She resisted the urge to roll her eyes, “I was just out for a run and I wasn’t looking where I was going.”
Sutton pursed his lips not pleased with the response. He was expecting something more than the lie that Hailey produced. It was clear that Sutton wasn’t convinced. Hailey chewed a piece of the grilled cheese slowly adverting her eyes away from Sutton.
“That was some running. You looked like you were afraid. Like you were being chased. I’m not trying to pry—“
“Than drop it.” Her tone took a sharp note. Hailey hadn’t meant to sound so cruel and it showed on her face. She frowned seeing the hurt in Sutton’s eyes. “I’m sorry. I’ve just had a really bad day. I don’t want to talk about it.”
Sutton was silent for a long while he kicked at a pair of shoe son the floor of his room. He was pushing his luck here. He had just met this girl and he was expecting her to confide in him. “Okay then.” He stood. “Well, I hope you enjoy the soup and I’ll let you be.”
Hailey never meant to scare him off. Apparently Hailey needed to work on her people skills. “Wait, can you tell me what the date is?”
“November 10th”
“And the year?”
Sutton cracked a smile; “Blimey you must have hit your head pretty hard when you fell. It’s 2011.”
Hailey held her breath for a moment and nodded. Sutton left the room. She had traveled back from the 52nd century to the 21st. Hopefully no one would find her here in this century. Hailey finished the grilled cheese but didn’t touch the soup. She was never a fan of tomatoes. She set the tray aside and climbed out of bed. Her muscles ached a little. Rubbing the back of her neck Hailey was a little sorry she wouldn’t be able to say good bye to Sutton. She couldn’t stay here for too long, otherwise she risked McNaibor and his Time Agents finding her. Flipping open the Vortex Manipulator Hailey was careful to input a specific date and place this time. However when she pressed the button that would send her through the time vortex, nothing happened. Hailey blinked and tried again. And again.
“You’ve got to be joking!” she exclaimed. The manipulator had gotten damaged somehow and was no longer operable. And since Hailey had no idea how to fix it, she was stuck in the 21st century.
Her best bet would be to go to a place that a hardware store where she could at least get some tools to try and fix her manipulator. Hailey hadn’t the slightest clue when it came to time technology, or at least fixing it. She had spent enough time around her a father, a former Time Agent to know enough about the stuff but it didn’t make her a mechanic.
Hailey found her shoes sitting by the foot of the bed. He had taken her shoes off? Something about that made Hailey blush. Before the thought could grow in her head she slipped on her black shin high boots.
Sutton’s apartment was small but fitting enough since it seemed only he lived there. There was a small hallway that two other rooms branched off of, one had to be a bathroom and the other probably a guestroom. His living room and kitchen were almost one and the same. They merged into one another with practically no space for any kind of dining table. The apartment itself wasn’t as near as messy as his room was.
“Is everything okay?” Sutton asked slightly alarmed. He turned the TV off and set the remote down. His television was a tiny little thing only around 17 inches. Everything about his apartment Sutton found adorable. She had traveled with her father to various points through out history but Hailey had never seen the 21st century. She ran her hand over the television. It was an antique to her, basically a relic.
“You keep asking that.” Hailey said distracted by the DVD player next.
Sutton just smirked from the couch. He watched her with curiosity as she picked up the DVD player.
Hailey realized she was getting sidetracked and moved toward the door purposefully.
“Wait, you’re not leaving?” Sutton got off the couch and went after her.
Hailey turned. “Oh, sorry my mind was a million miles away. Thank you, and good-bye Sutton.”
“I wish you’d stay for a bit honestly, I’d like to know a little more about the girl I saved.”
“Saved?” Hailey asked incredulously. “I really need to go.”
“Well at least let me walk you to the tube, it’s getting dark out.”
Hailey hesitated she didn’t have anything against Sutton and he was seemingly hard to get rid of. He wasn’t a bad person and very cute if Hailey was being honest to herself. Still, she had to fix her vortex manipulator. She sighed as Sutton begged her with his green eyes. She had never seen eyes that bright before. They were hard not to look at.
She turned her head adverting her eyes otherwise she would have given in without a chance. The pleasant smile on her face fell as Hailey caught sight of something curious. There was a small bookshelf near the door that housed not only books but also a few picture frames. One of the pictures was of a man that looked like an older version of Sutton but with lighter hair. Beside the man was a young boy with brilliant green eyes and a mess of dark hair.
“Who is that?” Hailey asked nodding to the picture.
Sutton took a deep breath and Hailey could tell that it was a topic that held a lot of bad emotions. He didn’t reply right away and instead stared at the photo as if deciding whether to lie or not.
“My dad.” he finally said.
Hailey narrowed her eyes, she had seen that man before somewhere but she couldn’t’ place his face to a name. “He looks like—never mind. Just reminded me of someone.”
Sutton didn’t have that smile that reached his eyes anymore. Hailey realized that something must have happened between the two of them, either that or he was no longer living. She felt awkward and foolish for bringing it up. It was all the more reason for her to leave. Hailey stared at Sutton as he continued to eye the photo in the frame. Before Hailey knew what she was doing she leaned forward and planted a light kiss on Sutton’s cheek.
This shook Sutton from his thoughts and he looked to Hailey with a surprise. His eyes questioned her action but he didn’t say anything.
“Thank you Sutton, I won’t forget you.” Without waiting for him to respond Hailey left, having no idea where she would start looking for a way to fix her manipulator.******
It was late and the Tube was all but deserted. A few people were scattered about its corridors including a man with a guitar and an open case. A few pence and a couple pounds lay inside, his earnings for providing passersby with entertainment. The man strummed his guitar to the tune of “Over the Rainbow” and hummed along.
Two pairs of footsteps echoed down the corridor coming closer to the man and his guitar. Taking this as an opportunity for a few more pounds at the most he stood up straight and played louder this time singing the lyrics.
Around the corner came two large men. They each wore black trench coats with matching insignia on the front lapel. One of them wore sunglasses and the other was completely bald. They walked in sync with one another, almost military like.
They passed the man by without so much as a second glance.
“So up tight you can’t spare a pence?”
The bald man stopped and turned slowly on the balls of his feet. He stared at the man with cold eyes and an expression that could kill. He slowly reached for something inside his trench coat. The other man with sunglasses looked back over his shoulder.
“Hammer, leave him we have a job to do.”
The bald man named Hammer considered this and turned back.
“Nutter.” the guitar man muttered as they walked away.
A second later Hammer pulled a gun from his coat and without having to look aimed over his shoulder. He fired and the guitar man disintegrated to a pile of ash.
“It slipped.” Hammer said coolly after receiving a look from his partner.
They climbed the stairs and were now street level with London, England in the year 2011. Hammer sucked in a deep breath.
“She’s here somewhere, Bevell. I know she is.”
Bevell surveyed the buildings and the people passing by on the streets. He flipped open his Vortex Manipulator and keyed in a few pieces of information. He set it to locate a specific type of genetic code, the DNA of Robert Riley. Riley was a former Time Agent until his demise only a day ago. A blimp showed up on his manipulator and Bevell smiled.
“Got’cha.” he muttered. “We’re coming for you Hailey Riley.”*******
“This is pointless.” Hailey grumbled. She had broken into a computer repair shop figuring they would have the best tools for fixing her Vortex Manipulator. Of course Hailey had no idea how to begin fixing it, plus she was certain the technology was too advanced for anything here. Hailey tossed the screwdriver across the shop.
“Why did you have to go and break on me?” she lifted the manipulator off the table and glared at it as if it would magically listen to her and work again. Hailey buried her face in her hands. Her mind wandered back to Sutton. It was obvious that Hailey wasn’t going to get back to the 52nd century tonight; maybe it wouldn’t kill her to stay with someone for a while. And Sutton wasn’t that bad of a person, he was extremely good looking. She smiled at thought.
The picture of Sutton’s father appeared in her mind again. That face looked so familiar, where had she seen it before? Like a switch flipping on, it flashed back to Hailey. The photo of the same man hung in the halls of the Time Agency. He was in the history books where she was from.
“Matthew Wylder.” Hailey gasped, “How could I have been so stupid?” She grabbed her vortex manipulator and raced out the door of the repair shop. Hailey cursed herself, she never should have left Sutton’s apartment. Fate or whatever it was had brought her to Sutton for a reason.
Hailey was across town by now and it was nearing 3 A.M. she doubted Sutton would be awake. It was of little importance whether he was sleeping or not, she would pound on his door regardless.
About two blocks from Sutton’s apartment Hailey got that sneaking suspicion she was being watched. The streets were dark and mostly empty but Hailey couldn’t help but feel uncomfortable as she went on. Hailey slowed to a walk tired of running. She had done a lot of that in the last twenty-four hours.
Hailey looked over her shoulder after hearing the scuffle of boots. She paused and did her best to see in the darkness. The lights that were available cast shadows and made it impossible to make out the harmless shadows from the not so harmless. She hesitated before continuing on.
From an ally a head of her a man stepped out into a beam of light from a lamp. He was bald and Hailey recognized him from the Time Agency, Kenton Murray or better known as Hammer to the rest of the Time Agents. He was one of McNaibor’s right hand men and one of the more deadly Time Agents. Rules didn’t settle well with Hammer and the lines of right and wrong were always blurred together for him.
Hailey stopped in her tracks. They had found her.
Hammer smirked at her maliciously. In his hand he held a gun but it was lowered at his side. Hailey had a sneaking suspiscion that there was another behind her. And when she glanced over her shoulder sure enough there was another Time Agent Hailey knew as Ashton Bevell. He was another deadly Time Agent, and one of McNaibor’s psychic pets.
“No where to run sweetie.” Hammer said in his gruff voice.
Hailey felt her heart pick up. She looked back and forth between both of them. They started to close in on her. Hailey knew that they wouldn’t just capture her and take her back to McNaibor. He had no use for her. The two of them were here to execute her.
Hailey had to run and run fast. She couldn’t lead them to Sutton she had to go someplace else and find him later. That was, if she was still alive later on.
“Come along cutey, we won’t hurt you. Well unless you count reducing you to ash…but I hear it only hurts for a moment.” Hammer chuckled. He raised the gun and aimed for Hailey.
“Don’t call me cutie you bald headed buffoon.” Hailey probably shouldn’t have called him that, but she had a crazy idea. And it would require her to be quick on her feet. Luckily she was good at running.
Hammer didn’t like this he snarled at Hailey. “You little brat!”
“I bet you’re the brains of this aren’t you?” Hailey said to Bevell. He didn’t reply. “And the looks.”
This sent Hammer over the edge and now it was Hailey’s chance. Hammer let out a frustrated growl and fired his weapon. Hailey reacted just in time though; she lunged out of the way. The attack narrowly missed Bevell who ducked at the last second. Hailey didn’t wait around she took off down another alley trying to come up with a plan. Odd were they had tracked her with their manipulators which meant that no matter where Hailey ran they would be able to find her. She had to stall somehow until she figured out a way to block the signal.
The only way she would be able to block it was if she were to send out a frequency that would interfere with the Vortex Manipulator. Trouble was Hailey had no tools and no means of producing such a signal. The 21st century was useless in the category of helping her technology wise. Hailey caught site of a shop with cell phones in the window display. She could jumble the manipulators for a short time if she was able to send out a signal with the phones. It was a slim chance but Hailey knew vaguely how go about it.
“Where do you think you’re going?” Bevell appeared in front of her. Hailey skidded to a halt.
Hammer approached from behind his gun ready to fire. Bevell held his hands up though to stop him.
“Wait, I think a quick death wouldn’t be right for this one. McNaibor would be pleased to know she suffered even a little bit.” The pleasure at this idea was present in Bevell’s tone. It chilled Hailey to the core. She was going to die.
“Alright then, but I get the first go at her.” Hammer grunted. Without waiting for permission he took a few strides forward and grabbed Hailey by the back of her hair. She shrieked in surprise and struggled against his grip. It only made Hammer’s hold tighter. Bevell came closer. He looked at her Vortex Manipulator.
“Why don’t you run through time like before?” he asked with genuine curiosity.
Hailey didn’t reply she merely glared at Bevell trying to hide the terror from her eyes.
Bevell scoffed and he tapped the screen. “It got damaged when your father was…terminated.”
“You killed him you bastards.” she screamed and kicked at Bevell making contact in his side. Bevell barely flinched.
“He had it coming.”
“Come on Bevell let me take her and play with her a bit.” Hammer said leaning in to sniff Hailey’s hair.
Bevell sighed and nodded. Hammer threw Hailey to the ground. She went down hard putting her hands out to brace for the fall. They skidded on the cement leaving scratches and painful burns. She winced and then looked to her manipulator again. It wouldn’t transport her through time. Again with her not thinking properly. She didn’t need radios or a cell phone to send a signal to interfere with Bevell’s device. She had the answer around her wrist the whole time.
Quickly Hailey went to work and when she pressed the right button a high pitched pulsating noise echoed from the manipulator. Bevell and Hammer staggered back covering their ears. It was all Hailey could to do to not do the same thing. She managed to push herself off the ground and take off running again but not before she messed with her manipulator to disrupt any activity for the nearest devices. It would most likely screw with hers as well but it needed to be fixed anyway. It wouldn’t last for long but it would buy Hailey hopefully enough time to get to Sutton.
She ran as fast as she could disappearing into the shadowed streets of London not looking back to see if Bevell or Hammer were following. Her ears were ringing and she felt like she were going to vomit. This wasn’t good. Hailey didn’t expect them to find her so soon. Hailey turned down another alley after a few blocks in the opposite direction of Sutton’s apartment. She had to be sure they wouldn’t follow her and she could not lead them to Sutton.
Hailey was quite good at breaking into places without being noticed. She could disassemble an alarm system and security system with her eyes closed. There was what looked to be an abandoned apartment next to a small pub. Hungry and needing something to calm her nerves, she borrowed a few things from the pub before hiding out in the apartment. In the morning she would go directly back to Sutton. He had no idea how important he was to her and to the future of mankind.
