--------------------------------------------------------------------- The first thing Harper did upon getting into the hotel room was dump everyone's bags in the corner. Gods, she wasn't built for being a bag carrier. Note to self: Never become a bellhop. She stretched for a second while Gavin went around the room and shut the blinds. It was nice to have a little bit of a breather, though she was painfully aware that her sister was laying on a bed nearby with an injured leg. But before Harper could heal her, she'd need a minute to recuperate. Healing could take a lot out of her if she wasn't careful, and in this tired state she was in, Harper wasn't even sure if she'd be able to make it through healing her sister without passing out.
"I'll be there in a second, Soph. Just hold on, okay?" Harper asked with a worried voice. She stumbled over to her bag and unzipped it. Digging through, she managed to pull out some granola bars. Because in all honesty, she was starving. She hadn't had any breakfast, had gone on a six hour bus ride, and had just faced down a manticore. Without even thinking about it, Harper tossed one to Gavin and made sure to save one for Sophie if she felt like eating after this was done. Without even waiting, Harp tore open the wrapper and stuck the bar in her mouth and rummaged furhter through her bag for the first aid supplies she had. Ambrosia and nectar was pretty much all she had, but in reality it was all a demi-god needed.
Harper brought the ambrosia and nectar over to Sophie's bed and set it down on the nightstand next to it. She pulled the granola bar from her mouth, chewed on the portion that had been bitten off, and looked over to make sure Gavin was coping. But he looked weird, and a concerned expression instantly came over her. "Gavin, if you need me to heal you after Sophie, just let me know. Eat the granola bar, see if getting food in your stomach helps," she instructed him before climbing over Sophie and taking a seat next to her on the bed.
Very carefully, doing her best not to touch the wound, Harper inspected Sophie's leg. The stinger was still there, which meant Harper would have to pull it out. It was surprising - that a little Apollo girl who couldn't even lift a sword wasn't even the least bit squeamish at the sight of blood and gore. "Okay, Soph, here's the deal." Harper reached over her sister and pulled the thermos that contained nectar in it and handed it to her. "You need to take a sip of that, but don't drink too much or you'll catch a fever and your insides will turn to mush. I've got to pull out the stinger, but after that I should be able to heal the poison and maybe even close the wound. After I'm done, you can eat a piece of ambrosia."
Harper scrambled over to their mediocre bathroom and scrubbed her hands clean. She couldn't take the stinger out and handle her sister's wounds with dirt and grit all over her hands. She realized that her skin was slightly raw and scraped from jumping to the ground earlier, but she paid it no heed. Her sister needed her right now. She grabbed a towel too just in case.
The daughter of Apollo settled back on the bed and rubbed her hands together, but winced when that irritated her scrapes. "Okay, this is going to probably really hurt. So please don't punch me or anything." That had happened once, back at camp. She had a bruise for a week. Harp wrapped her hands around the stinger and bit her lip. It was better to pull it outright, like a Band-Aid, rather than ease it out. Taking the greatest grip she could, Harper sharply pulled out the stinger and winced as blood started oozing from the injury. To make sure no blood got onto the sheets, she slid the towel underneath Sophies leg and took a deep breath. This was it. Her half-eaten granola bar sat forgotten on the nightstand.
"Okay, listen. I have to sing when I heal, or it won't work. So that means no interruptions, and please don't make fun of me." With that being said, Harper cleared her throat, and put her hands on either side of the wound. She shut her eyes, concentrated, prayed to her father that she would have the strength to do this, and began to sing.
It was a gentle tune, and it sounded Celtic, the way she wound notes into the other and the music just came naturally to her. She felt the energy leaving her, and the whole process took about a minute or two. Harper was becoming more and more exhaused by the second, and she wasn't entirely sure she could hold out. Instead of singing now, she hummed, and eventually stopped altogether. When she opened her eyes, the wound was mostly healed. It hadn't compeltely closed, but the bleeding had stopped and most of the muscle had sewed itself back together. Harper let out a deep breath, and her eyelids drooped in exhaustion. "You should... you should have a square of ambrosia and then... then get some rest." Every time she paused, a great yawn took a hold of her.
WORD COUNT 955 TAGS Gavin, Sophie NOTES Basically, I winged it as far as the healing went. That's how I pictured it in my head, hope it will do. This is just another one of those posts that got away from me. >.> SONG In my head, Harp was singing something like the tune of this.

~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Sophie nodded and tried ignoring the pain. She was hot and the cool water that she was drinking in her water bottle did not seem to the eldest daughter of Apollo any good. She looked around at the other two and was glad they were alright. That meant to say it was worth being in pain with. She ignored Gavin’s comment about it being like lead or something. She had no idea, but that feeling were her leg was heavy now she could feel throughout her body. What was happening to her, she really wanted to know. Now the pain was nothing but a numb feeling making her mind go fuzzy a bit.
The girl laying in the bed watched Harper come over. Her head was beginning to spin and she closed her eyes hoping it would stop. As she reached for her bottle again she was shaky. She put it down not caring now, despite her dry mouth, that tasted like she was going and wanted to throw up. She turned her head looking away for a moment as nothing sounded good. This was weird as she was always hungry, even if she did not look like it.
The girl just nodded to Harper. “Do what ever you have to Harp,” she replied. The girl honestly sounded sick and just plain exhausted. Sophie maybe the best archer at camp, but Harper was the best healer. Yeah that came in handy. Sophie took a small drink of the nectar and could feel her body warm more then it was, cold. She put it next to her, now just wanting to sleep, which she would have if it was not for the fact that she was in unbearable pain.
Sophie was usually ready for anything but not this! One thing Sophie hated was bloody pain. Her first instinct was to push Harper away (but she knew her younger sister was only trying to help) so she went to her second instinct. Yelling, maybe some cussing a little bit here and there, and crying. Yeah pain did not help her at all. She closed her eyes tight. “Damnit! So glad I killed that freakin thing! Other wise I would just kill it again and again!” she muttered through.
She remained quiet, not really having anything strength now. She closed her eyes and just laid back wanting nothing more then to sleep. When Harper healed her it felt like an icy hot pad that runners would use on their mussels to heal them. Not eating, as she was not hungry, Soph just ended falling asleep right in that spot.

“No, I’m fine.” He lied when Harper offered to heal him. There was no healing these nightmares. “Just help Sophie.” Gavin closed his eyes for a moment and leaned back taking a few calming breathes. He could still hear a small echo of laughter in his head. He rubbed his temples again. He was almost afraid to fall asleep for fear he would dream of that power and of Harper crying. He didn’t want to be the cause of her tears.
Gavin glanced over to Harper as she began to sing. It was probably the most beautiful sound he had ever hear din his life. He was willing to bet it rivaled Orpheus, if Harper wanted to she could probably make Hades himself cry. The singing made Gavin feel guilty for not telling Harper about his dream and everything he wrote in his journal. What harm could pass in telling her the truth? Maybe she could help somehow...no. No there wasn’t anything Harper could do or at least there wasn’t anything Gavin wanted Harper to do. He didn’t need her to worry about him and botch up this quest. If they lived through all of this, then he would tell her. That is as long as his dreams stayed dreams.
When Sophie fell asleep after the healing process Gavin smiled, proud of his Sunshine Girl. Her yawning made him tired as well. He sighed heavily and watched her, was it possible to love someone so much? Gavin wanted to wrap his arms around Harper and take her then and there. But he figured it wouldn’t be appropriate, what with Sophie sleeping in the bed next to them. Not to mention Gavin knew Harper wouldn’t go for it. Gavin would just have to settle with holding her, and that was just as satisfying.
“Good job Sunshine Girl.” Gavin said “You’re a regular Nightingale. And now that you mention it I am feeling kind of out of it. I think you may need to come over here and heal me.” His lips curved up in a mischievous smile and his arms opened for her to fit in. Gavin would fight against his dreams as long as he could. The power was tempting and deep inside he wanted it more than anything in the world. However, Harper was keeping him tethered to this life and this side of the battlefield. Without her Gavin didn’t know what he would do, probably crash and burn. He didn’t want to be alone. WORD COUNT”416 NOTES”harp i love the song you showed me, and it fits so well! --------------------------------------------------------------------- Fairly exhausted, Harper looked back at the day. She'd gotten up this morning, earlier than anyone else at camp, hadn't eaten breakfast, and had met Gavin and Sophie at the edge of camp in the early morning. They'd gotten on a six hour bus ride, pretty much, getting looked over by the manticore guy pretty much the entire time. Then, almost immediately after getting off the bus, they were attacked by said manticore and now all of this. Not many people could say they had this eventful of a day. Just the thought of where they were sort of excited Harper. Soon enough, she'd be able to show Gavin and Sophie the beautiful side of Niagara Falls. Tomorrow, she promised to herself.
Yawning again, she looked over to where Gavin was, there on the bed across from the one she was currently occupying. Harper blinked sleepily, and saw his arms open for her. She smiled at him, the mischievous in his face sparking some in her own. "Oh, you poor baby," she said. "I guess I'll just have to come over there and take care of you." And with this, she stood up, nearly fell over into the wall, and stumbled over. But just before she went to Gavin, Harper blinked. "Oh, hang on a minute!"
She went over to her bag and once again pulled out her blanket. Harper knew very well that she wouldn't be able to sleep without it, even if she was next to Gavin the entire night. For a second, she pondered whether or not she should take out her teddy bear too, but then decided against it. Gavin would definitely make a better teddy bear. But when she pulled out the blanket, the little piece of paper that had the poem she'd written for Gavin tumbled out. Harper looked at it for a second, picked it up and folded it, and went back over to him and climbed onto the bed. She gladly went straight to his arms and kissed him on the cheek. Her heart fluttered as she did so. He was so warm, the warmth that was keeping the fire in her heart going. She was no expert in love, but she was pretty sure that was what this was. Harper glanced over to where Sophie had fallen asleep, just to make sure she wasn't going to wake up and feel uncomfortable.
Holding her blanket with one hand, Harper hesitantly handed the folded poem over to Gavin. She bit her lip. "Um... here. I, uh, while we were on the bus, and... and you were sleeping, I... I wrote that. But don't read it right now. If you... if you ever feel like you doubt that I lo... if you ever doubt about us, I want you to read it, okay?" Harper looked down at that poem, still biting her lip. For some reason, she had an unshakable feeling. He'd need that poem. She wasn't sure how, or when, or why, but she sensed that he would need it. She was completely oblivious to Gavin's dreams and plight at the moment, but there was just something in her that told her he'd need it.
She felt so comfortable in his arms, like he was a puzzle piece she'd been missing all along. To her, it felt like this was the way it should always be - them together, with their arms around each other. Harper was convinced that anywhere would feel perfect as long as Gavin was there with her. Because, the fact of the matter was, she loved him. Really loved him. Loved him more than anyone else in the world.
Being very careful so as not to pull herself from Gavin's arms, she unwrapped her blanket and tossed it over their legs. It was the first time she'd ever shared her blanket with anyone. Leaning her head on his shoulder, Harper wrapped her arms around his stomach and hugged him close. She was so glad that they'd gotten away from this alive. The minor scrapes on her hands weren't really bothering her now, so she ignored them. "So are you really okay?" she asked him softly, enjoying the quietness of the hotel room.

Gavin placed his hands behind his head and leaned back against the headboard. He smirked at Harper. She couldn’t look more beautiful than the way she was looking in that moment. When she stumbled he flinched a little but he saw her regain her balance. He chuckled a little. Healing took a lot out of Harper and while he was concerned about her the stumble was kind of cute. His cheeks flushed light pink when she kissed him. He cleared his throat and eyed the piece of paper.
“Harper,” Gavin took the paper and was very curious to read it now but he would do as Harper said. He wondered what it could be. His eyes scanned it as if he had x-ray vision and could see right through the words underneath. Gavin’s gaze went back to his girlfriends face. “You’re crazy if you think I’d ever doubt us or doubt you.” He set the note aside and wrapped his arms around Harper and drew her closer. He looked her directly in the eyes and kept the stare for a long while. Everything Gavin could ever wanted was laying right next to him.
He saw a life together in Harper’s eyes that he had never seen before this moment. The two of them were still young but he didn’t want to be a part from Harper. It would kill him. And despite all of this and the way he felt about her, the whisperings in his mind and the dreams were strong. He secretly began doubting everything he knew but he clung to Harper and everything about her. Gavin didn’t want to doubt her or their relationship. Unfortunately Gavin was afraid it wouldn’t be long now until that shadow came forward and offered him that power. Gavin wasn’t strong enough to resist it.
Gavin pushed the hair out of Harper’s face and after a long minute he leaned forward and kissed her on the lips. When he pulled back his lips form a genuine smile, something that only occurred around Harper. “I love you.” He whispered and kissed her again. As she laid her head on his chest Gavin soaked in the feeling that he got whenever she wrapped her arms around him. If Gavin died here and now he’d be content in dying in Harper’s arms. He reached up and softly ran his hand through Harper’s long brunette locks. Her hair was soft and felt like silk. Gavin hesitated for a moment. The question of Harper’s had both an easy and a complicated answer.
Gavin still wasn’t ready to tell her the truth. He glanced in the direction where he had set the folded note Harper had written. Again he ran through various ideas of what might be written on it. He drew in a deep breath and exhaled. It would be betraying her trust if he didn’t tell her. Gavin weighed his options but the conclusion was simple. “I’m fine, so long as you’re here.” He kissed the top of her head. It wasn’t a whole lie. There was some truth to it but there was also doubt and uncertainty behind it all. Maybe Harper would keep him safe from himself. It would be nice but Gavin hungered for that power. It was beginning to scare him at how desperate he was to have it. WORD COUNT”558 NOTES”Is this the first time Gavin said “I love you” ? --------------------------------------------------------------------- "It's not that I doubt you or us, Gavin, I just... that's just in case," Harper murmured, snuggling up against him. She lay there for a minute before looking up at him just to find that he was staring directly at her. A small smile formed on her lips as she stared right back. He saw a future in her eyes, and she saw a future in his. She could see them ten years from now, a little Gavin or two running around... she was only sixteen, but a lot of other teenage girls thought about this too. But not a lot of other teenage girls got to experience the love that Harper was experiencing right now. And she had an unshakable faith that she was the only teenage girl who'd ever experienced this kind of love with Gavin Sawyer.
She blushed a bit when he pushed the hair from her face and kissed her, and went even redder when he whispered that he loved her. Looking at him with a conviction in her eyes, remembering the poem she'd written for him, she murmured, "I love you too. More than you'll ever know." Harper kissed him back with fervor, completely unashamed that her sister was sleeping in the bed less than six feet from them.
She lay there, in his arms, and sighed with contentment as his fingers started weaving themselves through her hair. It was so relaxing, and the exhaustion from healing Sophie was catching up to her fast. Gods, everything here felt so right. Being in Gavin's arms was the easiest, best thing in the world to her. Harper never wanted to leave this position, this hotel room. She didn't want to face her quest, the double fear, someone going over the falls, and the betrayal she knew was coming. Just thinking about it made Harper want to cry. She wouldn't be able to handle it if either Sophie or Gavin went over Niagara Falls - surely that would mean certain death.
For now, Harper just tried to concentrate on this moment. Gavin spoke to her, and she smiled and wrapped her arms around his stomach and hugged him close. "Well, I don't plan on going anywhere. I'm right here," she murmured with a great yawn. For a moment, she released him with one of her arms and grasped the blanket she'd laid over their legs and pulled it up so she would be better covered. The sun was going down outside - it had to be eight or nine by now. Both of their godly parents would be going to rest now. She smiled to think that both of their parents had something to do with the sun. Briefly, she wondered if Eos and Apollo were friends. What they'd think of her and Gavin dating, and loving each other.
Harper wrapped her arm back around Gavin again and squirmed for a second until she was even more comfortable than she had been. "Are you comfortable like this? We can get under the covers if you want. I don't want you to get cold." She released another yawn and looked up at him worriedly. There was something bothering him - she could tell, but she wasn't going to pester him about it. That could wait until after this quest was over. "Gavin, whatever happens tomorrow, I want you to know that..." (she had to pause to let out another yawn) "I want you to know that you mean everything to me."

If Gavin had to think about losing Harper, or hearing her cry like he had in his dream it broke his heart. And while Gavin didn’t ever want to harm Harper in any way shape or form, there was a sneaking suspicion that he would inevitably lose her and he would be the only one to blame. The hypocrisy of it all swirled around in Gavin’s head making him sick to his stomach. It would be a lie if Gavin said he didn’t want that power he felt in the dream. With that power he felt that he could take on Zeus himself and even win. That, of course, was a bold idea and very presumptuous of him.
Gavin knew the Gods didn’t care about them. His mother was the only one Gavin had respect for and as of recent he even began doubting her. Then again he couldn’t blame her for her actions, Zeus was selfish and so were the rest of them. They only wanted demigods to do their dirty work, because they were cowards and could not fight a battle for themselves. For a slit second Gavin thought about the things he had heard about the Titan War and the Battle of Manhattan, and he entertained the idea that maybe Kronos had it right. The idea didn’t stay long the feeling of Harper’s lips pressed against his made everything float away.
He kissed his girlfriend back passionately forgetting everything negative that had been running through his head. It was in that moment that Gavin realized as long as he had Harper he would be all right. Her love would save him from any temptation. She was so purely good that Gavin wasn’t so sure he deserved her. Gavin gave her his crooked slightly smug grin and rested his head on top of hers. Hearing her say that she loved him made Gavin feel like he could rule the world if he wanted, without that power. He still yearned for that unnamed power though. In the back of his mind he worried but at that moment Gavin was convinced that Harper would be the key to his survival. He wouldn’t live without her.
“I’m perfectly fine.” He said not wanting to move or let go of her for fear that she would disappear in a wisp of smoke. Gavin needed her to save him from the dangerous thoughts that plagued his mind; trouble was Gavin was too damn proud to tell her the truth. He chuckled a little but there was a note of sadness to it. He frowned hoping Harper wouldn’t sense the worry or the doubt in him.
“Whatever happens tomorrow” He mimicked her. She was basically giving him the end of the world speech, like she was saying goodbye. He couldn’t handle that; to make things even he was going to do the same. He worked at keeping his response light and cheerful but then again Gavin had difficulty making anything sound cheerful, it just wasn’t in his nature. “I want you to know that no matter what I’ll always love you, and nothing can change that. I’m pretty damn sure you’re the best thing to ever come into my life.” His arms pulled her closer and held her tighter like two boa constrictors trapping her in his grasp forever.
Gavin heard an echoing whisper in his mind after his little speech and even though he couldn’t make out the exact words he felt a shiver of fear go down his spine. He could tell she was tired and in truth so was he. Gavin was hesitant to fall asleep not wanting to have those nightmares revisit him. He took one of his hands and ran it gently through Harper’s hair. After a minute he whispered softly in her ear, “You’ll always be my Sunshine Girl.” WORD COUNT”641 NOTES”oh some epic foreshadowing! --------------------------------------------------------------------- Harper wasn't entirely sure how much more right this moment could feel. With her boyfriend's arms around her, and her arms around her boyfriend, on a reasonably comfortable bed, with her special blanket tucked around her, and quiet. She could hear the gentle breathing of her sister on the bed over, and Harp smiled to herself. She was so glad that Sophie was alright, and that she'd actually been able to do something. Because the gods knew she could hardly do anything else. She wasn't meant for adventure, or fighting, or violence. Anyone that knew her could testify to this fact. She wasn't even sure why she'd been given a quest.
But right now, Gavin was with her, and that was all that mattered. For this one moment, everything was perfect. She felt warm and safe and protected here, and it was all thanks to Gavin. Gavin. Her boyfriend. Harper was still trying to wrap her mind around the concept. He had such good in him, but she knew he couldn't see it. She also wasn't stupid - she knew that he was only like this around her, to her. She wasn't about to try and change him, because then he wouldn't be the Gavin that she loved. Loved. Another word she was trying to get used to. She definitely heard it enough around camp from the Aphrodite cabin, but had never suspected she'd feel this emotion for the grumpy, gloomy son of Eos that made life hell and heaven at the same time. But as her mother had told her one, love never made sense. It just... sort of existed.
When Gavin told her that he was perfectly fine, she smiled and snuggled closer to him, if that was even possible. He was such a comfortable pillow, and hearing his heartbeat so close to her was a relaxing therapy that soothed even the deepest fears in her heart. He was so warm and alive and here. Nobody would take that away from her, she was convinced of it. Even though there appeared to be something wrong, she wasn't about to force whatever it was out of him. Harper trusted him to tell her whenever he was ready, and she prayed to the gods they'd have time to talk about it after this quest.
"What? It's a legitimate concern," she protested in response of his mimicking her. She pouted, sticking her tongue up at him in the most mature reply she could think of. "Don't make fun of me. It isn't nice. I'm half tempted to not kiss you ever again just for that." Of course she was kidding, and it showed in her voice and in the mischievousness of he chocolate brown eyes. But the words he said next made her visibly soften, and even though she was contradicting what she'd just said, Harper kissed him on her jaw gingerly. "And you're the best thing that's ever happened to me, Gavin. I love you."
Just saying it made her realize just how real her feelings were for him. Her heart pounded, her stomach felt like it had a million butterflies in it. He was making her feel utterly alive. However, now was when the sleep was really beginning to catch up with her. It felt like a weight she'd been holding off, but Harper wasn't strong enough to keep it away any longer. Relaxing against the one boy she'd ever loved, Harper kissed his cheek one more time before settling down with her head on his chest and her arms around his waist. His arms, for a second, were extremely tight around her, and she almost tiredly warned him that she couldn't breath, but couldn't find the energy to do so. Her eyes flickered closed as she gave one last long yawn and smiled at the words Gavin whispered in her ear. "And I'll... always... love you... no matter what anyone else says."
And just like that, Harper Marowski fell asleep in the arms of the young man that she loved.
