Annabeth was tired of this. She needed to talk to Percy. Now. It had been nearly a week since they got back from the quest and Percy’s stupid little vanishing act was getting really old. He was hardly ever anywhere to be found, and didn’t even show up for meals anymore. Part of her wanted to be furious with him for being a coward, and part of her just wanted to cry. The fact was, she needed him to talk to her again. She needed to see him. She didn’t want to believe that that wasn’t going to happen in the near future. So she had set out to search the entire camp. Even the most unlikely places, she would go there. Unfortunately, it had been a good two hours and there was still no sign of him.
She’d gone to his empty cabin, to the dining hall, the armory, the arena, even Zeus’ Fist - though it technically was a really bad idea to go into the woods alone after that Blake kid had been found dead a while back. She just had to find Percy though. She could hold her own, after all, right? Everywhere she looked, though, there was no sign of him. She was running out of options. Unless he had some new method of knowing exactly where she was so he knew where not to be, which was sort of unlikely. Come to think of it, she wondered if Daedalus had anything interesting that might help with that effort on that laptop he gave her. But she didn’t have time to look into it. She was going to find him the old fashioned way.
Trouble was, he was really good at hiding the old fashioned way. She was starting to lose hope she would find him. It was like he wasn’t at Camp at all. She headed for the lake, the only place she hadn’t checked yet, it seemed. And of course he wasn’t in sight. Not that it meant anything. He was Percy Jackson. He could be at the bottom of the lake if he wanted to be. She walked to the end of the dock and kicked a rock in, which earned her a very nasty look from a nyad, but she really didn’t care right now. She just sat down on the end of the dock, tempted to hang her feet in the water if she weren’t wearing tennis shoes, and stared down at the water. It brought back memories of their first day dating, two years ago from tomorrow, Percy’s birthday. She wondered if she’d be able to celebrate that with him. If he would get up the guts to face her by twenty-four hours from now. Word Count: 456

Percy rubbed his jaw. It didn’t hurt as much as it would have had Percy not be invincible. The punch from Luke felt more like a strong bit of pressure making it slightly uncomfortable. And although Percy could not see it there was a tiny faded red spot the size of Luke’s fist. It was fading fast though hardly noticeable any more. He sighed wishing he hadn’t said that thing about Annabeth. Percy knew it was one hundred percent untrue. But he had to make it convincing to Luke. Thank Gods he was invincible. The guy would have sent a few teeth flying.
He had to break up with Annabeth though as much as it killed him. Percy’s dream or vision or whatever about Annabeth really shook him and he was too afraid to tell anyone about it. Everyone would make such a huge deal over it and in truth there wasn’t really anyone he could tell. He just had to separate from Annabeth stay as far from her as possible. That was the only way to prevent her death at his hand. He’d leave camp but they still needed him. Besides, school was coming up soon which meant that they would be apart anyway.
Walking past the lake Percy saw her, and she was beautiful as she ever was. There wasn’t a day where Annabeth didn’t look like a Goddess to him. He was either about to do the dumbest thing in his entire life or the smartest. Percy watched her for a moment a few yards away. Taking a deep breath and letting it out Percy said a silent prayer to his dad and headed over. “Poseidon forgive me.” he muttered.
Though in reality he should have been praying to Aphrodite for what he was about to do. She was the one who was going to roast him. Then again, she did say tragic love story. Maybe this was the tragedy she was talking about. Who was Percy kidding; Aphrodite was going to love this. It was Athena Percy should be worried about. For breaking her daughter’s heart the Goddess of Wisdom was going to use him as the rag to polish her shield. Percy made a face at the idea but quickly shook it from his head. He was now standing behind Annabeth.
He swallowed hard. “Hey, wise girl.” Percy said in a shaky voice. He eased himself down on the dock next to Annabeth. Percy starred at the water terrified to even glance in Annabeth’s direction. “I’m sorry for the whole, avoiding thing. I had, uhh, things to think over. I kind of didn’t want to see anyone.” Percy sniffed and kicked at the water his shoes brushing the surface of the water of course they did not get wet. He sighed, expecting Annabeth to hit him or even push him into the lake. He did deserve it for avoiding her. Annabeth stared at the water. It looked so nice and glittery and happy, like it was mocking her. Oh course the water would be mocking her. Like it was telling her over and over that the son of the sea god wasn’t there with her. He hadn’t been for a few days. She’d never been away from this long while at camp. And considering the last time she saw him he’d basically told her to shove off. She found herself not even looking at the waves anymore, instead clinging to the last happy memory she had with him. On her quest in the middle of the night, he’d woken up and sat with her while she was on watch. It had been so nice to just sit there with him, even if the topic of conversation hadn’t been wonderful and happy. She’d taken his presence as granted then. Now she would do anything to go back to that and just have him here again.
As if answering her silent wishes, a familiar voice came from just behind her and she snapped out of her daze, twisting to look at the new arrival. For a moment, it seemed odd to have him there, like a dream rather than reality, then it finally sank in that it was actually real right about as he was sitting down next to her. It was what she was hoping for: him here with her again. But her initial reaction didn’t show it. She reached out and smacked him on the shoulder, fully aware that it wouldn’t hurt him, but also aware that it would make a point. “It’s about time, Seaweed Brain! Where in earth have you been hiding? Gods!”
She paused as the details started to set in. He had a nice red spot on his chin for one. She raised an eyebrow at him. “What happened to your chin? You forget to actually open the door again?” Truth was, he’d never done that to her knowledge - though she wouldn’t be surprised sometimes - but poking a little fun at him just seemed natural. She frowned. He wasn’t even looking at her, not smiling, nothing. And his voice and just everything about him seemed nervous as though he was about to give a speech to a crowd of a thousand or something. There was something genuinely wrong. He only acted like this when the world was coming to an end or the time she’d bugged him into actually dancing at the camp dance. “Percy?” She asked, leaning in a little closer, all traces of joking and cheeriness gone from her voice. “So are you going to tell me what’s going on or am I going to have to play 20 Questions?” She fixed him with one of her usual calculating stares. Though this time it was trying to figure out what on earth was going on in that head of his, which was no small task. Word Count: 493 Song: STAY WITH MENote: *super cries* Percy, don't do it!

Percy rubbed his shoulder on impulse. It didn’t really hurt but it was one of those forces of habit. Someone hits you; automatically you tend to the spot that was hit. He pursed his lips and didn’t respond directly to her anger. Things were going to be much worse after what he was about to do. Percy shrugged his shoulders sheepishly. He told her basically where he had been but not the extent or details. Percy kicked at the water again.
“What? Oh, right.” He touched his chin and glanced over to her. Again he shrugged as though he didn’t care. His cheeks flushed with embarrassment. That was one time, [/i] Percy thought. He shook his head and narrowed his eyes on Annabeth a little less friendly than usual. “Luke returned the favor. I hit him. He hit me. We’re even it was nothing. Except, I think he might have broken all the bone sin his hand. But that’s what he gets for hitting someone he knows is invincible.” Okay, so Percy felt guilty for the breaking of Luke’s hand. Why? Because he had basically called Annabeth easy when Percy knew damn well that was a lie. It was a betrayal to Annabeth just like the deed at hand. He sighed and stared out at the lake. He cleared his throat not sure how to do it that would ensure the least painful reaction from Annabeth. The answer was there was no way. Percy was still very much in love with Annabeth and it was going to kill him to turn and look her in the eyes and say that he didn’t love her anymore. It was a down right lie that would kill him as much as her. She was perfect for him and truth was there was no other girl for him. Would he be lying if he said he never once pictured an extended future with her? Yes. Percy once found himself imagining what she would look like in a wedding dress. He knew they were only teenagers but it just happened to cross his mind one day randomly. Now he was about to put an end to the one person who got him through the most. Percy was preparing to break the heart of his best friend. But it was to ensure that she would live and not die by his hand. Breaking her heart to save her. When did his life become like a bad teen romance novel? Annabeth’s voice brought Percy out of his thoughts. “Huh?” he looked to her. Annabeth was closer to him now. Percy felt his pulse start to race. Couldn’t he just lean in and kiss her and forget everything that had happened? “Annabeth,” he started slowly his eyes moving away from hers. “The last couple days I’ve been thinking yeah? And well, I had a lot to think about with Luke being back from the grave and all that. And I realized that even if you don’t love him back the way you used to, I don’t know if I can ever trust you won’t feel those feelings for him again. You know what I mean?”Percy took a deep breath ready to plunge into the biggest mistake of his life. “Annabeth, I think it would be best if we….didn’t date anymore.”[/size][/blockquote]

Annabeth stared at him for a minute as he rubbed his shoulder and acted actually… timid? Okay, so there was seriously something wrong. He usually had no problem saying whatever, but here he was shrugging and playing with the water like a shy little elementary school kid. It made her briefly wonder if he’d been like that when he was little. His mom had shown her a picture of him from elementary school sitting on the beach and attempting a sand ‘castle’; whether or not Percy knew she had seen that picture she didn’t know. He’s seemed very happy and cheerful in that picture, but then again, it wasn’t in school and he was near the water, despite not even knowing his connection to it at the time.
She was pulled back to the present by his own verbal realization that he shouldn’t be in la-la-land either apparently. She almost smiled when he blushed, until he all but scowled at her. Without meaning to, she leaned away a little. It wasn’t that she didn’t think she was a match for him - invulnerability aside, of course - but emotionally he could easily beat her to a pulp. She listened to his explanation, almost not wanting to know the details given his tone. As much as she hated to say it, he had a point. First off, she was sort of glad Luke had hit him. He had been sort of asking for it, after all. Though breaking the bones in Luke’s hand? That was a bit harsh. There were times she sort of wished Percy wasn’t invulnerable.
Leaving it at a wince, she watched the water move and glisten, silent for a moment. What was she supposed to say to a comment like that? Admitting he deserved it probably wouldn’t help things, showing sympathy for Luke probably wouldn’t help things, and she had no desire to show sympathy for Percy after everything that had been going on. So she took the next best route: change the subject, find out what was wrong with him that was causing him to act like this. He was getting too quiet and it was starting to almost scare her taking into account how unnatural he was acting.
Her suspicions were confirmed when he wouldn’t even meet her eyes, and yet it raised so many more questions. What was he hiding? She nodded absently. Going into solitude and thinking wasn’t that surprising really. And when he mentioned Luke being one of the main causes of that, she couldn’t say she was surprised either. So much was changing, it was hard to keep up. And then he continued and she felt her heart stop short.
“…I don’t know if I can ever trust you won’t feel those feelings for him again.”
That wasn’t possible, was it, what she was hearing? Her mind translated it immediately to what she saw as the logical deduction:
“…I don’t know if I can ever trust you… again.”
She opened her mouth to say something, but she had no idea what to say. She just knew she had to stop this nightmare. This was a nightmare, right? He sounded deadly serious though, that was the worst of it. And he had the nerve to ask if she knew what he meant. No! She heard his words, but they didn’t make sense. They weren’t right. Why-… how could he? He ended up speaking before the painful words swirling in her head could form a sentence to get out her mouth.
It took a moment of staring disbelieving at him for it to sink in, but when it did, she would have gladly taken a dozen - no, ten dozen - poisoned daggers straight to the heart. He… was breaking up with her? A single tear preceded the rain as it ran down her cheek, but she was too numb to notice it. All because he didn’t trust her anymore. Because one thing that she couldn’t even control, he didn’t want her anymore.
Her grief turned abruptly to utter disbelieving rage and she stood in one swift motion, standing as close to him as she could without actually touching him for the sheer desire to tower over him. “That’s all it takes, huh? You feel insecure, mr. hero, and pin it on me, make it like suddenly I’m not good enough for you anymore. Do you even realize how many times-… how much I’ve done for you!? What’s Luke to Rachel, or Calypso, huh? Oh, and don’t even pretend that that wasn’t a nice reminding stab when you made a specific point to free your little island crush two years ago! If I let insecurities get in my way, we never even would have started dating to begin with, Jackson! My mom was right about you! You useless, idiotic, troublesome piece of pond scum!!!” By this time, tears were streaming down her face. How could he do this? How could he? Her hands were balled in fists, ready to give him another nice red mark on the face, but the idea of breaking all the bones in her hand. So she went with the next best thing to get the point across. “Good riddance then!!” That said, she gave him a hard shove in the hopes of forcing him off the dock and into the lake. It wouldn’t hurt him, wouldn’t even get him wet - which was rather a shame in this case - but it at least made her feel microscopically better.
Not bothering to see if he went into the drink or not, she turned on the spot and ran for it back up the dock toward the cabins. She didn’t want to be near him, she didn’t want to hear any more. It was enough to know that he didn’t trust her, that his insecurities were enough to shadow the idea that - at least as he had told her before - he loved her. Or if something so simple was enough to change his mind so drastically, maybe he had never really loved her to start with and his trust was conditional. No, it was too painful to think about. Everything was painful right now. At least several of the cabins were very distinctively-colored so she could find her own even through the near-blinding tears. She just wished she could wake up already.

Percy instantly regretted everything he said to Annabeth and he honestly didn’t mean a single word of it. However, with Phobos and this terribly real dream looming over him he felt it in Annabeth’s best interest and safety to keep her away from him. It was a dumb idea and the biggest mistake Percy had made in his entire life. It was too late though the damage was done, and Annabeth looked like she was going to kill him. Not too far off from his dream.
He listened to her chew him out bringing Rachel and Calypso, which stung, cause it was always Annabeth and it would only ever be Annabeth. Sure Calypso would be his biggest what if, but she was no Annabeth. Percy was silent avoiding eye contact with her while she yelled at him. He already had guilt surging through him he didn’t want to look in her eyes and see the amount of pain and anger that her voice now held. He was doing this to save her, he was doing this to save her life.
Percy kept trying to justify his actions in his head and didn’t expect Annabeth to give him a firm shove from behind. He blinked and fell forward face first into the lake. Being a son of Poseidon the water did not soak him. Percy allowed himself to sink to the bottom like dead weight and there he sat on the floor of the lake for a minute a few water nymphs swimming around him giggling. They had apparently overheard what had happened and found it funny. Percy glared at them and when he couldn’t take it any longer he resurfaced but only up to his nose. Annabeth had already left. He was doing this to save her. He broke her heart, and his own to save her life. Those were the thoughts that kept replaying in his head. His conscious tried to convince his heart that what he did was right. But if it was right, why did he feel like such a jackass?
“Fantastic.” Percy mumbled glumly underwater. The nymphs continued to giggle at him and his misfortune. In his frustration and depression Percy sent a blast of water at them. They screeched and went away not bothering to retaliate, not like they could drown Percy anyway. This was the crappiest day in the life of Percy Jackson.
