It had been about a week since Luke had that fight with Percy on the beach, and his hand still felt a little weird. He was still believing that Percy had gone off his rocker, feeling that he needed to just break up with Annabeth because he was back. Just then again who was more off his rocker? Because Luke was the one who flat out admitted it to Percy that he was in love with his girlfriend when he hadn’t even told Annabeth such. Why hadn’t he told her again? Oh yeah because he too was off his rocker. Annabeth sure knew how to pick them.
Just then again she had kissed him in her cabin, and hasn’t spoken to him since so they may of cause him to hesitate a bit. Not that he could blame her, who would want to be in love with an ex rouge-recently dead-extremely broody-with father issues-demigod? He shook his head a bit; he was starting to think like Jackson. He had probably just been training to hard and it was going to his head. He had been training non-stop all week, something he found was that when he was training, his mind had less of a chance of running away with him. He had even began teaching sword fighting to the younger campers like he had used too.
However now Chiron had told him to take the afternoon and just relax, that he was going to work himself into an early grave…again. So now he was left alone with his own thoughts walking in the strawberry fields with his hands buried in the pockets of his cargo pants. He had actually began to look like his old self again, golden blonde hair and muscles hidden behind tan skin. Hell he was even wearing a orange camp t-shirt again, with the sleeves cut off of course. They only things now that showed a change in him was the grey streak in his hair and the look in his eyes that made him almost seem allot older then he was.
He ignored the few looks he got from some of the kids who were picking strawberries, whether it was because they recognized him or just thought he was weird for walking around aimlessly he didn’t know, nor did he care. He knew he had an awful past, had made allot of mistakes but this was his time to make up for them.
Once he found a break in the straw berries he lay down next to a bush and placed his hands behind his head and stared at the clouds. He just looked up for a moment, playing with the beads that where now resting against his neck again. This was his time to make up for past mistakes; he had tried his best to talk some sense into Jackson. He still had the throbbing fist to prove it. Just he knew now If he got the chance, one thing he would make up for was letting Annabeth go. Now that he knew how she felt, if Percy was a big enough idiot to really let her slip through his fingers, Luke wouldn’t make the same mistake.
He loved Annabeth, and he wasn’t about to let that go again…

Annabeth was on break and decided lay down in her cabin with a book, though the words were jumbling even more than usual. Sleep, at least at night, had not been her friend lately, so her body told her it was in need of this often overlooked necessity by, quite simply, knocking her out mid-paragraph. That was when the dream came. Or rather, the nightmare.
It was the same as she’d had dozens of times, at least at first. She was back in the Battle of Manhattan, in the throne room. Normally her dream started so much later in it than this though, all the way when Luke was dying. But this time Luke was up and living, and so was Kronos. It was like she was both watching herself and being herself, replaying the actions over, at the same time. She was by her mother’s throne and the whole thing looked like a nightmare in itself. She shouted for Kronos to stop. It worked. Sort of. He turned and slashed at her. If Luke hadn’t been holding the Titan back, she’d have been killed easily, but she managed to hold him off long enough to try and talk to him, which didn’t work so well. She did, however, earn herself a good strike right in the face, which hurt just as much in the dream as it had two years ago.
She focused on Luke, trying the last thing she could think of to wake him out of his bonds. This time though, it wasn’t enough. Luke’s eyes remained golden, filled with fury and hatred. He raised backbiter, and seemed to freeze. She looked at Percy pleadingly, but he was just standing there, watching like this was just a boring lecture, apparently not under Kronos’ spell anymore. He got the message though. And he glared. ‘No. This is all on you. I should have known you’d take his side. Should have known I couldn’t trust you.’
She stared at him in horror. Of all the times to lose his mind. ‘Percy! Help me!’ But it was obvious from his expression that he was not moving a muscle. Meanwhile it seemed Kronos had unfrozen, like he’d paused just long enough for Percy to deal that emotional blow. And now his skin was glowing faintly, like it had been in the real battle right before Luke had killed himself. It meant Luke was going to die, but this time just as a pawn of the Titan’s power, not as the hero who stopped him. The war was lost. He brought his sword down, point aimed at her heart.
Annabeth woke with a start, throwing her book to the floor as she sat up suddenly. Okay, just a dream. A scary as Hades dream, but just a dream. She needed fresh air, and by fresh air, she meant some place far from the majority of people here. The woods would work well, but she was still a little shaky from the dream and thought it best not to try and set herself up against a potential monster like that. Her next thought was the strawberry fields. They were hardly populated, and sparsely when they were. And she was right. There were all of about half a dozen people in the fields picking strawberries. So all she had to do was stay away from those-… She paused and looked back. Yes, there were six people, but they weren’t all picking strawberries. Well, all but one were. The last one was just wandering. And the last one… was Luke.
Without really bothering to think about it, she headed towards him. At least here he was neither golden-eyed nor glowing, which was a major relief. She came up from behind, noticing how deep in thought he looked, which now that she thought about it, was kind of normal for him. Falling into step beside him, she leaned forward slightly so she could better see his face and he could better see her in case he was in one of those walking zombie moods he got in occasionally. She remembered when they were younger, she’d caught him brooding over something once or twice and once it had even taken her poking him on the forehead to snap him out of it. “Hey, Luke. Mind if I join you?” Word Count: 722 Tag: Luke

Luke was still playing with the beads the rested on his collar bone, walking along the strawberries when he heard someone come up behind him but didn’t really pay them much attention. They probably weren’t looking for him anyways, the only person he expected would was Avery and she was out training and probably wondering where he was. Just Chiron had told him to ‘take it easy’ so that’s what he was going to try to do. He wasn’t really sure he knew the meaning of the word, or had lost track of what it truly meant sometime between Percy’s arrive at camp and plunging that dagger under his arm.
As he walked he placed his hands back in his pocket and in the right one, he messed with a small metal trinket that had been burning a hole in said pocket for over a week. It had actually been something that he had started before all of the stuff with the war of Kronos had happened; it was a charm bracelet he had meant to give to Annabeth for her birthday then. Just he never had gotten the chance. Lucky for him, when he got back to camp it was still hidden in his hide away that he had left it in all those years ago and for the past couple weeks since he had gotten back he had been adding a little more too it. A swing set for their special place, the same place where he had first seen her after his death. A dagger for the one he had given her when they first met, the one that stood for their promise. A bear that he gave her for her eighth birthday, which last he heard she still had and a lightning bolt for when it had all gone wrong. Then finally the one that he had spent three days wondering if he should risk putting it on. A heart, because he knew that she defiantly had his.
Almost like she had guessed his train of thought, Annabeth appeared beside him and he jumped a bit.” Oh hey, no of course not…”Part of him felt like he should ask her why she had been avoiding him, but he thought it was kind of a moot point. Whatever it had been she was here now, that counted for something right? He kept walking for a few moments, staring down at his black converse.” Ive missed you, haven’t really gotten to see you much since I got back.” And you kissed me in your cabin. He finished in his head, but he didn’t really want to push anything by bringing that part up. He found a spot at the end of a row of strawberry bushes and took a seat, patting the spot beside him.” Come on, I think we have deserved some time to ourselves right? Just like we used too.” He said with a bit of a glint in his eyes, knowing that usually when they had time to themselves it could range from sitting and talking to setting the Aphrodite cabin on fire. He was always a bad influence on her.” So what is new in the world of Ms Chase?” He asked doing his best to hide the worry in his eyes, how successful had his talk with Percy been? He doubted it had gone over well, but there was always hope. Just truthfully, what was he really hoping for? After a few moments he cleared his throat.” Um I know it’s a week early, but this has been burning a hole in my pocket for gods knows how long.” He looked at her with a charming smile.” Close your eyes and put your arm out…” He waited until she had done what he asked before he placed the charm bracelet on her wrist and took a deep breath, so many things could go wrong now….but he had promised himself he wouldn’t let her go without a fight.” Open..”

Annabeth smiled slightly as she fell into step next to him. “Great. Thanks.” Because honestly, she’d probably just go back to her cabin and work on building designs of something equally exciting if he had said no. It was comforting, walking with him like this. Like old times. Walking like this, it was as if the whole Titan War thing had never happened. And the craziness with Percy, and the break-up (minus the fact that she didn’t feel so tied to Percy now) too. It was… reviving. Except that he was staring at his feet, which wasn’t encouraging. Maybe it wasn’t just like it was before the war. Or, come to think of it, he’d had his broody moments then too.
Then he opened his mouth and her good mood dropped a few notches. Oh. That. She felt horrible. She had been avoiding him, if not always on purpose. After all, two days had been spent locked up un her cabin not wanting to talk to anyone at all. It was her turn to watch the ground. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to be ignoring you. Well, I mean… it’s complicated.” That was an understatement. Everything concerning Luke Castellan was complicated. She looked up from examining the grass before each step when Luke stopped. They had come to the end of the row of strawberries and she hadn’t even noticed until he was sitting down and beckoning her to do the same. She smiled slightly. That phrase – time to themselves – was something she’d learned from roughly the age of eight to associate with fun stuff. Usually in the form of talking for ages about whatever she came up with – he was usually so understanding about her youthful babbles – or him leading the way and teaching her some fun new trick.
So naturally, she sat down next to him. “I think it’s definitely high time we got some time to ourselves.” Her smile faded a little when he asked what was going on though. No, she couldn’t tell him the whole of what was going on. It just seemed wrong… Anything but the mess with Percy. “Oh, um. You know, just like I always did. Finished another design. Working on reading a couple books. Training has been going well. What about you?” It was all true. Just not the whole truth. She hoped he hadn’t noticed her missing at meals and training for a few days, or the news and rumors spreading like wildfire. Annabeth looked over at him curiously when he cleared his throat. It took her a second to realize what he was talking about. A week early? For what? But in all the confusion of what all was going on lately, she’d completely forgotten her 18th birthday.
She had to smile back when he threw that charming smile at her. “You didn’t have to get me anything, you know.” How he managed to get her something in the short time he’d been alive, she wasn’t sure, but somehow, as he usually did, he managed it. Despite her insistence that he didn’t need to do this, she obediently closed her eyes and held out her arm. It felt like he was wrapping something around her wrist. She held back her curiosity though and waited for him to tell her she could open her eyes before finally doing so. She immediately gasped at the gold bracelet catching the sunlight and lifted her wrist closer to her face to examine it. Little silver charms dangled here and there: a bear, a lightning bolt, a swing, a glistening red heart… and a dagger. It was when she saw the dagger charm that she true meaning of it sunk in. Just like in her dream, except that the promise had kept them together in the end, had worked. And the bear… his first gift to her, for her eighth birthday. She still slept with it when she was going through rough times. The lightning bolt, she could only guess was for Zeus’ bolt. When Luke originally was tricked by Kronos. The swing, of course, had to be her favorite playground that she coerced Luke and Thalia into taking her to so many times when she was little. And where she had met Luke again just before he’d come back to life. And a heart… she thought back to the last time she’d talked with Luke, in her cabin, when he’d found the letters that had informed him that she had and did, in fact, love him. And when she’d kissed him for the first time. And it was sitting right next to the dagger. His promise that she was safe with him…
Annabeth turned and wrapped her arms around him and, not really caring who was there to see, stole a kiss before hugging him close. “Luke, it’s beautiful. Thank you. I’ll wear it always.” Word Count: 812 Tag: Luke!

Luke looked down at her and just gave her his usual soft smile.” Really Annabeth, don’t apologize…If anyone knows the sudden urge to get away its me.” He had this bad habit that whenever things got hairy he would either pull away from people, or just disappear altogether. That was one thing he was definitely going to change, there was actually some people who still counted on him here so he wasn’t about to go anywhere, at least without a really good reason. He looked at Annabeth out of the corner of his eye for a moment and had a feeling if he ever did leave again, he would ask her to come with him.
He chuckled a little as he laid down and she said that six years seemed like a long time, but not.” Yeah, still seems like yesterday we were a couple of kids who were all each other had..” He said softly, almost like he was getting lost in the memories. They had been hard times too, but at the moment they seemed so easy by comparison. Though the upside was this time around he didn’t have an evil titan playing around in his head, the only one in Lukes mind right now was Luke. That was the way it was supposed to be, at least in his opinion. He nodded when she commented on him teaching swordsmanship again, truthfully he had always had a passion for it so being able to help teach younger kids how to defend themselves was actually really fulfilling.
Luke rose an eyebrow and turned when she said that the quality of the training had gone down since he left.” You pulling my leg Chase?” He asked as he leaned up on his elbows to look at her.” But yea it is really good to be back, more then I originally expected it to be. I missed the camp more than I thought I ever would…” And the people in it… He added in his head before turning to look at her again. When he asked her about her birthday he chuckled and shook his head.” Nah its Annabelle.” He said before telling her to close her eyes.” Yes I made it, and yes I had to go through the trouble.” He said with a mock serious tone, a ghost of a smile on his lips.” Your my best friend Annabeth, where then too and I wanted to show you what you meant to me..” Wow wasn’t he sounding corny? But it was actually how he felt, something he learned over the years was that lies never really got you that far.” I had a compartment in my cabin that no one knew about, put it in there before I left and when I came back it was still there. I just had to add a few more since then, but it is still basically the same…” He said before he watched her close her eyes, taking a deep breath it was now or never. He placed the bracelet on her wrist and told her that she could open her eyes, when she did all he could do was wait…
He was about to ask if she liked it, when he obviously got his answer. Her lips where suddenly on his and he kissed her back without even thinking about it, who could blame him? He had loved her for years after all. However his brain finally seemed to catch up with the rest of him and he pulled away, she had a boyfriend! Or….didn’t. When she said Percy had broken up with her he just looked at her for a moment before cursing in Greek.” That idiot! I told him…I’m going to beat his face in...” Even if the last time he had done so he had broken his hand, damn thing was still in a wrap because he was to stubborn to go to the big house again.” I talked to the idiot about a week ago, he was talking crazy about you…It ended with me breaking my hand on his face when he ran his mouth.” He looked at her with regret in his eyes.” I’m sorry I didn’t do more, or tell you about it sooner. But anytime I tried to find you, you were kind of ignoring me. So I held onto this hope that he would of come to his senses by now” He said before running his fingers through his hair, what the heck was with Jackson anyways? He had really gone from hero to zero in four seconds flat it seemed.” I’m sorry…” He just prayed that she wasn’t pissed at him, because he wasn’t sure he would be able to handle being on the same list as Jackson right now.
When she made the joke about not kissing any else sense then he cracked a small smile.” Yeah, I never really pegged you as that type anyways. You have a big heart but you rarely give it out…” He said before looking down at the bracelet on her wrist that he had spent so long on.” Your welcome Anna.” He said as he took her hand gently.” Im guessing you have allot of things to work out, but I just want you to know…What you said in your last letter? It wasn’t unrequited, and still isn’t.” She had told him she still loved him, and he was just sick of her not knowing that he loved her too. He didn’t want to go to the underworld again without Annabeth Chase knowing that Luke Castellan loved her.

Annabeth smiled to herself. Yes, talking about complicated with Luke Castellan… well, she was pretty much preaching to the choir now wasn’t she? She smiled up at him when he half-hugged her and kissed her forehead just like he used to all the time when they were younger. “Yeah, I know. If anyone understands complicated, I imagine it’s you,” she said with a laugh. Though the reminder that she’d been so reclusive lately. “Yeah, I guess so. Still sorry though.” She watched him out of the corner of her eye, a little sad he’d returned his hands to his pockets. It had been a nice change back to how things once were, having his arm around her. Sure, Will and Cam would put their arms around her every once in a while when she was hanging out with them, but they didn’t have the same history as she and Luke did. Or the same meaning.
She walked in silence beside him, letting him think. That was another thing she’d learned growing up with him: there were times it was best just to let him be. “Six years,” she said quietly, thoughtfully. “Feels both longer and shorter. But yeah, I’d say it’s safe to say it’s overdue.” She tried to keep the conversation casual and nice, which was no easy feat with everything that had been happening lately, as she explained what was going on in her life lately, or rather part of it. She could tell he didn’t fully believe her though. Then again, this was Luke, the guy who could read her easier than a book. It was so much easier to just turn the question back to him rather than face that look of ‘I know you’re hiding something’ on his face. Annabeth listened silently and smiled. “Teaching swordmanship again? That’s great. You always were gifted at that. Guess I shouldn’t be surprised Chiron put you back at it. Quality of training went down a lot while you weren’t teaching. But yeah, returning to the early grave is probably not such a great idea. Glad you’re here and not six feet under.”
Annabeth took the teasing with a laugh. “Things have been… busy, okay? It happens. I guess,” she added with a chuckle. “Yeah, seems I am lucky to have you hear to make sure I don’t forget things like that. Gods know I’d be forgetting my own name next. Amanda, right?” She grinned to show she was joking. Joking. It was something she was really starting to learn the importance of lately. Since Percy had gone off to the jerk side and she’d relied more and more on people like Will and Cam, joking had become a necessary coping mechanism. “Wait, wait, wait. You made it? Luuuuke. You didn’t have to go to so much trouble. That’s really sweet of you, though. You started it before you left? Like, six years ago? How on earth did you keep track of it?” If he’d been carrying it around that whole time… no, that was impossible. She smiled at him, now very curious about something that had taken him so long to make, so she did as he asked and closed her eyes.
When she finally opened her eyes, it taking so long made a little more sense. The detail was amazing. And every piece fit something important. After a moment of looking it over, she did possibly one of the more spontaneous things in her life, which was really saying something, and threw her arms around him and kissed him. Though he surprised her right back by kissing her in return until his brain seemed to catch up with him. So he didn’t know? She was even more surprised by that than she was by him kissing her. It seemed like everyone around here knew. “No, I don’t have a boyfriend. The dufus you mentioned? He randomly decided he was done with me and broke up with me about a week ago.” She swallowed to make sure her tone didn’t slip. Yeah, she was just about over it, but it still hurt a bit to say out loud. She’d all but given up on Percy, considering how hard he’d let her down, but the fact of what he’d down, of how badly he’d hurt her, still remained. “So yeah. And if it makes you feel any better, you’re the first guy I’ve kissed since that,” she added with a hint of joking. She returned his smile warmly as though she’d just told him of nothing more than there being a chance of some clouds rolling through a little later. “And I love the bracelet. Thank you, Luke.” Word Count: 779 Tag: Luke!

Annabeth had to smile. Of course he understood. Over the years – or at least the years that he’d been around – he’d proved himself to be someone she could really talk to about anything. And someone who would listen without judging and would try to understand. Especially when it came to needing to get away from things, of course he understood. She smiled to herself as they walked. Things were changing, yes, some bad, but some good. And she had a feeling the person walking beside her could be counted on the good list. She gladly took a seat next to him. Oh, the times they used to spend here, talking, plotting, anything. His words brought back even more memories. She looked off over the field. “Yeah. That was fun.” The monsters, no. Learning later that Luke had been secretly planning what would later result in his death since before they even got to camp, not at all. But there were times she would never forget. The first time she took down a monster with Luke and Thalia and they had spared little when it came to encouraging her and telling her she’d done a good job. And Luke, to the side with his arms crossed and a look of pride she’d never seen anyone give her before glowing on his face. ‘I knew you were pretty clever, Annabeth.’ Though she doubted anyone but her and Luke and Thalia knew about it, that had meant the world to her. The first time someone was proud of her. She wondered idly if Luke even remembered it. Maybe she’d ask him sometime.
She laughed when he didn’t believe her take on the swordsmanship training. “Luke, you’re not the greatest swordsman around for nothing. So naturally losing your expertise caused a bit of an issue there. But if you don’t want to believe me.” She smiled. There was just something about hearing him say he’d missed the camp more than he thought he ever would that was… happy. After him leaving Camp Half-Blood and talking down of it every time she saw him for so long, to hear that where they grew up actually did matter to him was nice. Annabeth smiled. “Welcome home, Luke. It’s good to have you back.” She laughed when he offered her a different name, “Oh, gods, no! My algebra teacher last year spent the entire year calling me Annabelle. Never once got the fact that it wasn’t my name. Ugh, I wanted to smack him. So I ended up writing on the class evaluation form about it instead.” Mr. Cottrell, definitely twenty years too old to be teaching, hard of hearing, and convinced her name was Annabelle no matter what the roster said. That had been an interesting class. Annabeth gave Luke a hard look for insisting all his work had been perfectly necessary, though she ended up breaking into a smile. Staying mad at Luke Castellan, after all, was not an easy task. “Why am I not surprised there are secret compartments in your cabin?” she asked with a hint of joking before closing her eyes.
When she opened her eyes, the amount of work was evident. She took a few minutes to admire the bracelet before promptly kissing him by way of a thank you. And all Hades broke lose. Unfortunately, he took the news of Percy’s actions about as well as she had a week ago, just with a little less locking oneself up and sobbing and a little more colorful language. “Luke…” She closed her eyes, the emotional battle starting back up in her head. But there was one thing she was sure of: Luke attempting to beat Percy’s face in was not going to help anything. Not that she could stop Luke now that he was angry. She stopped and opened her eyes when he said that he’d talked to Percy a week ago though. When had that been? Before what happened? After? And what sort of crazy stuff was Percy saying that ended in Luke breaking his hand on the invulnerable demigod’s face? Gingerly she took his hand, which was wrapped in cloth strips, knowing now why it was so. “Luke, don’t be sorry. It wasn’t your fault. That must have been around the same time that he-… that it happened.” She still didn’t like saying that Percy dumped her. “Frankly, I was avoiding everyone for a few days after that, so… it’s my fault if anyone’s. Don’t you be sorry. Do you need some ambrosia for this, by the way?”
She smiled up at him. “Thanks, I appreciate you not thinking I’m easy or something. Or I’d probably break your nose, which I don’t think would go well with the injured hand,” she teased. She smiled on habit when he took her hand, though as his words sunk in, her smile faded slightly, but not from the words being bad or anything. In fact, they were possibly the greatest thing she’d heard in a long, long time. After a second, the smile came back quicker than it had originally and she let go of his injured hand, immediately wrapping her arms around him in a close hug. “Luke… thank you.” And here she’d thought that he was understanding before. But now he was even understanding when she didn’t have to tell him at all about the hesitation and internal battle going on in her mind. He certainly knew her better than anyone. A week ago, her world had been shattered into pieces. She’d started picking them up painstakingly, but now… now she had a means of keeping them together again.
