((a new fanfiction i am working on. not sure what direction it is going in yet, kind of making it up as I go along and the title is more than likely to change.))
Evan Noble ((for now, still searching for the best vision of evan))
I didn’t think I would be able to make it through an entire semester without encountering a monster or even getting in trouble. It came as a surprise to my girlfriend Annabeth, too. She came to visit for spring break and together we spent a week hanging out and surviving on nothing but pizza and diet soda. My Mom insisted I come home but I wanted to spend time with Annabeth, alone. I was already accustomed to living away from home because of those boarding schools mom shipped me off to when I was younger.
College was still way different than anything I had ever experienced. The course work was made to make even the smartest teacher’s pet want to drop out and work at McDonalds for the rest of their life. With my ADHD and dyslexia I thought I was doomed from the very beginning. Fortunately here they take into consideration if you have a learning disability. I wanted to tell them I wasn’t disabled I was just hardwired for ancient Greek and for fighting evil titans trying to take over the world. I didn’t think that would fly too well with my academic adviser. It was great to be able to pick what classes I could take though.
The first semester I had an encounter with a nasty hellhound on my way back from my night class. Annabeth was so worried she threatened to come pack me and my things and ship me Hermes express back to Camp Half-Blood. She often forgot that I was all invincible and stuff. Twice more I had a few run ins with other monsters but I still carried Anaklusmos around with me. I came close to handing him over to a classmate one day. That would have been awkward.
Living in the dormitories wasn’t too bad; a floor filled with freshmen college guys smelled a lot like Gabe. After a while no amount of showering or cologne would get rid of the second hand smell entirely. I was kind of thankful because I think it was the smell that kept away the monsters.
Annabeth went to Columbia and got a scholarship for a great architect program. I’m here at Adelphi University in Long Island. I wanted to be as close to Camp Half-Blood as possible. On weekends when I had no or was avoiding homework I would stop by to see how things were. Now I could go back for the summer the way I had been the past eight years.
“I don’t know about you,” Annabeth said leaning against the wall of my room “but if I never smell dirty sweat sock, molded pizza crust, and burnt popcorn again it will be too soon.”
I smirked at her and taped up my final box. I labeled it “Random Crap” and looked around the barren room.
“Hey, that combination saved my butt from getting eaten this year.”
“Being invincible doesn’t hurt either.” Annabeth said.
I walked over to her and placed my hands on the wall locking her in. She unfolded her arms and wrapped them around my torso. I pulled her close and buried my face in her blond locks. I inhaled—her hair smelled of strawberries. It reminded of camp.
“Year one down, three more to go.” I said.
“You know Percy, I didn’t have many encounters this year at school. Isn’t that odd?”
I furrowed my brow at the sound of uncertainty in her voice. It was strange. I remained silent holding her to me for a minute.
“Yeesh, get a room you two.” Evan, my R.A. and one of the only decent guys on the floor entered through the open door. I should have remembered to close it.
Annabeth’s arm dropped and she pushed away. I glanced at her and saw the faint shade of pink in her cheeks. I rolled my eyes to Evan. He was two years older than me with dark short-cropped hair and a boyish glint to his equally dark eyes. He was normally joking around but people took him seriously somehow. There were hardly any problems on our floor with fights, and if there was a fight Evan was able to break it up and make things right. The guy wasn’t athletic looking. He was thin with few muscles.
“We were kind of in one already.” I replied.
Evan smiled and walked further in. He slapped me on the shoulder and smiled at Annabeth. The two of them had met a few times before.
“Helping your boyfriend move out?”
I saw Annabeth force a smile, “What kind of girlfriend would I be if I didn’t?”
I caught the sarcasm in her voice. Annabeth formed a negative opinion of him early on. She wouldn’t tell me why she didn’t like him no matter how many times I pressure her. Evan was oblivious to her distain. Either that or he didn’t care. He looked back at me.
“Percy, I just came by to say goodbye. I hope your experience this year was good, and I hope your summer is full of adventures.” He winked.
It was awkward.
I glanced at Annabeth, she rolled her eyes and turned away.
“Thanks.” I said.
Evan nodded and looked around the room. He smiled and left. Annabeth smacked her lips and grabbed a hold of my hand.
“That wasn’t weird at all.”
“He’s different, but—“
I didn’t get to finish defending my friend as screams erupted from the hallway. I moved in front of Annabeth and raced out into the hall.
I stopped dead in my tracks as I saw a fury attacking one of my neighbors. Without hesitation I took out Riptide and charged into battle. Several people stood by gawking others ran screaming down the hall. The victim was my neighbor from two doors down; his name was Hank and he was a jock on the football team but with acne issues. He was kind of a pompous jerk but I didn’t think he deserved the death.
“Back off!” I screamed at the Fury. I didn’t stop to think I just saw blood, and lots of it.
“Percy Jackson!” The Fury turned on me leaving Hank cowering on the floor. His hands were covered in blood and there was a gashing wound on his shoulder. “How interesting to find you here.”
“Leave him alone, Alecto”
The Fury laughed, “Silly boy I am not Alecto. I am Tisiphone, don’t you remember me from all those years ago on that bus?”
My brow furrowed. “I don’t care who you are leave him alone or I will—“
“You’ll do what? Kill me?” Tisiphone laughed again echoing through the hallway it sent a shiver down my spine. “I’d like to see you try son of Poseidon. The rules have changed; I am not here for you boy. I am here for this one.”
She barred her fangs and turned back to Hank. I ran at her with Riptide raised, I made a slash for her leg but she was fast. Tisiphone turned and flicked me aside as if I was nothing. I crashing into the opposite wall and slid down. It hurt but no damage was done.
“Percy.” Annabeth ran down the hallway, with her dagger drawn. I raised my hand to her.
“Annabeth no!”
I got to my feet ready to try again.
Tisiphone smiled, “Two demigods in once place, perhaps I will kill you once I have finished with him.”
“You won’t touch him.”
Evan stood calmly feet away from Tisiphone. He was able to see the Fury for what she truly was. I didn’t understand how it was possible and quickly I went through my list of options. He was either a satyr, God, demigod or just one of those special mortals who could see straight through.
Tisiphone whipped her head in Evan’s direction and snarled. “Half-blood, I have come to the right place.”
That answered my question. Evan was a demigod. How did I not notice it before?
“I said you will not touch him.” Evan sounded a heck of a lot braver than most demigods in this situation. His eyes locked with Tisiphone and slowly the evil scowl on her face dropped into a blank expression.
“You will not hurt him again, leave here in peace.”
Evan’s words were soothing and powerful at the same time. I watched at Tisiphone straightened up and nodded. She vanished down the hallway. Even I was left to wonder what had just happened. I scratched my head and stared at Evan. His eyes focused on me. They were stern and almost cold. He walked toward me and gestured for me to follow. With a growing crowd of students I had no choice but to turn and follow. Annabeth gave me a look that said she wanted me to explain everything but I didn’t have any answers for her. We simply followed Evan down the stairs and out of the residence hall.
We climbed into Evan’s silver 2005 mustang and sped off. I didn’t know what to say at first so I didn’t say anything.
“Who are you?” Annabeth asked as soon as we were a few miles from campus.
“Evan Noble, resident adviser of Chapman Hall floor three and demigod. But I think you two knew all of that.”
“Not the demigod part,” I said finally coming out of my daze. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
Evan glanced at me over his shoulder and raised an eyebrow. “I suppose I should have mentioned it at our first floor meeting of the year. Hey guys, my name is Evan! I’ll be your R.A. I am a junior and my major is Graphic Design. Oh, did I forget to say that I am half God?”
I pursed my lips and sat back in my seat.
“I meant me specifically.”
“I wasn’t sure if you were a half blood or not. Can you imagine how awkward that conversation would have been?”
Annabeth scoffed, “As opposed to the other none awkward conversations.”
I reached over and squeezed Annabeth’s hand giving her a warning look.
Evan just laughed, “I have to admit once I found out you were a half blood Percy I was kind of excited but I wasn’t sure how to talk to you after that. I’m assuming Anna is one as well?”
“It’s Annabeth, and yes I am. Daughter of Athena.”
Evan drummed his fingers on the steering wheel and gave a nod. “Goddess of wisdom, very cool. Percy I heard that Fury say something about you being a kid of Poseidon?”
“Yup, that’s me.”
“Wow, a kid of the Big Three. I heard they are like uber powerful.”
“What about you? Who is your Godly parent?” I noticed Annabeth’s tone had changed even her demeanor toward Evan since he complimented her on being a child of Athena. She seemed proud that Evan was seemingly impressed. Evan’s fingers gripped the wheel harder so that his knuckles began to turn white.
“Themis.” He replied in a reserved tone.
I tried to remember who Themis was but before I could even finish a single thought Annabeth beat me to it per usual. I loved it when she was being all smart.
“The titan of law?”
Evan took a sharp right causing me to slide into Annabeth. I didn’t like the term titan being used in any sentence. After I had pushed myself away from Annabeth I interjected before Evan could say anything.
“Titan? Your mother is a titan?” My voice was filled with obvious anger.
“Titan goddess of justice, order, culture etc.” He watched us for a second in the rearview mirror. “Not all of the Titans were complete jerks. She wasn’t damned to Tartarus by Zeus like the others.”
Annabeth and I shared a look of understanding. My brain processed what happened with the Fury. “Titan of order? So back there in the hallway—“
“I didn’t need some ruddy old fury messing with the peace and order on my floor. A nice inherited trait from mom, I can have the ability to keep order. Like I’m the voice of reason or something like that. I’m not sure how to explain it, but when chaos happens I can normally talk people out of it.”
I said, “Where were you three years ago when Kronos was trying to topple Olympus?”
Evan just chuckled.
“Why haven’t we seen you at Camp Half-Blood, assuming you know what it is.” Annabeth said.
“I know of Camp Half-Blood. I chose not to go, because with my little gift I could get out of any fight. I didn’t want to be treated differently because I was a half-blood. A satyr came for me when I was thirteen but I refused to go. I attended a private school in Pennsylvania, graduated came to Adelphi. I wanted a normal life.” Evan sighed heavily. I couldn’t see his face from the back seat but I could guess his expression. “And I was doing so good until now.”
“I’m sorry.” Annabeth muttered, “We all wish for normal lives and you’re probably the first half-blood I have met to have gone for so long with one.”
“Not your fault the Fury attacked.” He said.
That raised an interesting point. I sat forward in the seat trying to stick my head up to the front. “Why did that Fury attack Hank? I mean he was mortal wasn’t he? And Tisiphone said something about the rules have changed.”
Annabeth shrugged.
“Hank murdered someone.” Evan replied.
I thought I was hearing things. It sounded like Evan accused Hank the jock of murder.
“Excuse me?”
“Not like serial killer murder or stalker murder. He was driving home from a party last semester and hit a girl and drove off. She died in the hospital.”
“How do you know this?”
“I can read people. Like, major things they have done wrong so justice can be served, all of that garbage. I hate it because sometimes justice can get out of control. That Fury would she have killed Hank would have gotten justice for that girl’s family but I couldn’t let him die. I may all be for doing the right thing and just deserts but Hank didn’t deserve that.”
“It doesn’t answer the question as to what Tisiphone meant by ‘the rules have changed.’”
Annabeth placed her hand on leg and I had to resist the urge to reach over and kiss her. I hadn’t done so in about two hours. Not to mention all of my worries fluttered away when I kissed her. She was the ultimate cure. Her brow creased and she pulled at her blond hair.
“We’ll have to speak to Chiron about it all. Evan can you take us to Camp Half-Blood, its here in Long Island.”
Evan threw his head back and laughed. The sudden mood change surprised me. “Where do you think I’m heading right now Bird Brain?”
I snorted at the nickname. Annabeth didn’t like that. She scowled at Evan piercing daggers through the back of his head and then she rounded on me. I was quick to drop the smirk. She eyed me carefully and then moved closer to lean her head on my shoulder. I took a deep breath and readjusted myself in the seat. Evan glanced at us through the mirror again and rolled his eyes. His hands reached over to the stereo. Loud rock music blared through the speakers causing Annabeth to jump almost hitting her head on the roof of the car. I had to bite down my tongue to not laugh. Evan’s shoulder shook slightly as he chuckled; apparently he had got the reaction he was hopping for.
