enlighten me reveal my F A T E just cut these strings that hold me S A F E It was an odd place to find an art easel and a lonely guy with the tortured artist look down. One would think the heat or maybe the occasional spurt from the lava wall would risk damage to the painting. But Gavin didn’t want to be around the other saps over by the Arts & Craft area. He made sure to the keep the easel behind the wall and out of site of people. He didn’t like being around people in the first place and the last he wanted or needed were the other campers judging his art.
Besides there was no one at the climbing wall right now, everyone else was off getting lunch or doing other activities. Gavin didn’t show his work to anyone, and while it was tempting to just sit inside his small lone cabin the sun was shining. As of recent he had a fondness for the sun and it wasn’t just because his mom was the Goddess of the Dawn.
Gavin sat staring at the blank canvas for what seemed like hours before he picked up the brush and actually began painting. He didn’t put much thought into the piece, he was just going off of what was running through his head at the time. About an hour after working on turning the white canvas into an actual picture Gavin froze realizing what or actually who he was painting. A pair of chocolate brown eyes stared out at him from a familiar face with the smile that seemed to glow. Gavin had been insanely preoccupied by thoughts of Harper, daughter of Apollo since their first and last meeting.
He frowned slightly thinking of a few things that happened during that meeting. He hated how he made her breakdown like that; he said a few things that Gavin thought was going to far. Even for him. Gavin also hated how she made him feel, not just then but now. He still felt vulnerable and confused about everything. AT the same though, Gavin was glad that they met and that he stole a kiss from her. Of course, he would never openly admit this to anyone.
Gavin lifted his paintbrush again and went back to work. He worked on the hair of Harper’s doppelganger. He wanted to get it just right especially the way it looked when the sun hit it. Absently Gavin began to hum which slowly evolved into muttering before he began to full on sing. It wasn’t something Gavin normally did, in fact he had never sang outside the confines of his cabin, or his head.
“And even as I wander, I ‘m keeping you in sight. You’re a candle in the window on a cold, dark, winter’s night. And I’m getting closer than I ever thought I might.” Gavin took the brush away from the canvas and spun it around in his hands, paint flying off to right and splattering on his jeans and shirt. He brought the brush up to his mouth like a microphone and belted out into it. “I can’t this feeling anymore. I’ve forgotten what I started fighting for!” He proceeded to play the air guitar forgetting that he was out in public.

and everything that you see here is for you from mei give it away so easily----------------------------------------------------------- As a general statement, Harper just wasn't all that hungry, even though usually when lunch time came around she was clamoring to get some food from the dining area before going back to archery practice or writing a poem by the lake or making something beautiful in the arts and crafts building. The sun was out, and at this point in the day the daughter of Apollo just couldn't resist wandering around. It seemed as though the sun gave her an extra boost of energy, which was perfectly understandable considering her father. Her chocolate brown eyes seemed to have an extra gleam in them today as she skipped out on lunch, and the way she moved made her look as though she was about to start dancing despite the time of day.
She honestly had no idea where she was going, mainly because she wasn't watching. Harper just let her feet lead her where they wanted, as she bent down every once in a while to pick up a flower or two - because some flowers grew in abundance here (she was sure that kids from the Demeter cabin or somebody cared for them) and all of them were beautiful. She was humming a tune herself, not really sure what song it was exactly. It was just a blend of notes that was transforming itself into something pretty - because Harper'd always had a gift with her voice.
That was when she heard it. A voice, faintly familiar and decidedly male, was singing. Harper tilted her head curiously - because it was coming from the direction of the ever dangerous climbing wall. That particular area of camp was a fearsome one for her, because Harper had been an unlucky camper on that thing and had broken her leg and also almost her arm burned off. Yeah, she was pretty sure she'd never had more ambrosia and nectar in one sitting before than she'd had right after that incident. So typically, she gave the climbing wall a wide berth but right now her curiosity had the best of her.
So Harper set off to find the mysterious voice, feeling very much like she was from the movie Little Mermaid. Surely none of her siblings had that voice - she would have recognized it and she was fairly sure that none of them were insane enough to skip out on lunch. This was enough to puzzle her for a few moments as she neared the voice. Of course, she hadn't been that far in the first place so it didn't take her too long to find out who it was that...
Harper froze in her tracks the instant she saw that it was Gavin Sawyer singing.
He was standing there, playing a mock air guitar with a paintbrush in his hand and an easel in front of him. She couldn't see what he was painting, because the easel was turned away from her, but the image was ingrained into her mind for probably the rest of eternity. Probably, even when her soul was wasting away in the Underworld (Harper was pretty sure she wouldn't be given the chance to die like a hero, and even then she wasn't sure she would if given the chance), this picture would be there to entertain her. She'd had absolutely no idea that Gavin was so artistically inclined, even though she'd seen him with a journal the last time they'd seen each other. Her chocolate brown eyes lit up with a mixture of excitement and amusement.
Harper stifled her small giggle with a hand pressed to her face as she tried not to make herself known. But in the end, the temptation was too great. The sunlight seemed to hit her just right as if her father was encouraging her to speak with him as she said, "I had no idea you could sing and play air guitar." She pulled her hand away from her face just to grin at him.

enlighten me reveal my F A T E just cut these strings that hold me S A F E Gavin spun the brush in his hand again and proceeded to use it as a mic once more. “My life has been such a whirlwind since I saw you!” Gavin turned around and opened his eyes to see the last person he ever thought he would see standing only feet away. Harper.
Gavin jumped about a foot in the air and fumbled with the brush. He tried to catch it but it fell to the soft grass as Gavin tried to play off his fright. He cleared his throat and folded his arms across his chest. He sniffed the air and glanced over to the painting. For a second Gavin felt his heart stop, his eyes darted back and forth from the Harper on canvas to the Harper standing before him. Quickly Gavin took a dirty towel full of paint smudges and covered the painting the best he could.
His expression hardened. He had been caught doing just about the dumbest thing he could think of, and by Harper of all people. Karma had a way of slapping him in the face. He didn’t want anyone seeing him acting the way he had. Harper was the last person he wanted to see right now. His face flushed a deep shade of red but the cruel look on his face would contradict the embarrassment. She had laughed at his actions; with that stupid cute grin she stood staring at him probably silently judging him.
“I had no idea you could reach a new level of annoying and yet, here you are.” He grumbled making sure to stand in front of the art easel. Gavin had already made a fool of himself in front of Harper and he wasn’t going to let it happen again. He had no idea what she would do if she saw the painting but Gavin didn’t want to think about it. He swallowed and examined Harper up and down.
He said, “Was there anything I could help you with Sunshine Girl? Don’t you have anyone else to pester, why do you have to keep coming back? You’re like a cockroach I swear. The end of the world could come but you’d still be around.”
Gavin prayed she would just forget about the little musical show he had unintentionally given. He bit his lower lip and did his best to keep his poker face on. While he hated that Harper saw him sing and rock the air guitar, there was a piece of him that felt a live when he saw her. They hadn’t spoken since their first meeting, which seriously had its ups and downs. Up being the kiss (at least it was an up for him) and the major down included the insults being tossed back and forth. Gavin tried not to smirk as he looked at her, she caused him such sweet misery. He was a fool for keeping his thoughts on her. Why he couldn’t just ignore her existence was beyond him, and this sudden appearance here and now wasn’t going to help matters.

and everything that you see here is for you from mei give it away so easily----------------------------------------------------------- When Gavin jumped and fumbled with his paintbrush, Harper simply couldn't hold in her amused laughter. She clapped her hands over her mouth as soon as she realized that she was laughing, because she really didn't want to embarrass him anymore than he already was... even though seeing this side of Gavin was much more enjoyable than she'd ever thought possible. Then again, she'd never thought Gavin had even had an artistic side. This was one of the most pleasant surprises she'd ever received in life. Even more so than the time her mother had taken a break off her work to take Harper down to Disney World when she was ten.
But then Gavin seemed to tense and harden, and Harper did her best to hide the disappointment on her face. She'd been hoping that maybe, just maybe, he'd be willing to be friendly with her. And yet, here he was, beginning to insult her again and just continue trying to get her to leave him alone. Harper wondered if he suffered from an anti-social personality disorder, or if it was just her that he was overly malicious with.
So she did the only thing she could really do. Play his game. Because to Harper, all they were really doing was playing an insult game. And this time, she was determined not to bare her weaker side to him again. She would make him bare his... and she knew he had one. She'd seen it, which was probably a reason why Gavin hated her so much. But other than that, before she responded, she briefly wondered why he did hate her so much. Because she, no matter how hard she tried, couldn't hate him. There was just something about him that prevented her from being completely and utterly bitter towards him. Whether it was his handsome physical look or the fact she knew he could be weak... she just didn't know. Or maybe it was something else all together. Either way, she just couldn't being herself to hate him, even though it looked like he hated her.
"And I thought that you couldn't be any more grumpy, and yet here you are," Harper pointed out, keeping her voice smooth and her expression as least amused as possible. She tried to hide her smirk when she then added, "I might have to start calling you Grumpy, like that dwarf from Snow White. You sure act like him." Then, she lost the battle with herself and giggled. Just a little. Harper really didn't want to seem rude, because that hadn't been the way her mother raised her.
She noticed how Gavin securely positioned himself in front of his art easel, like he was trying to hide it from her. This only amused Harper even more - what could he possibly have to hide on that canvas he'd obviously been painting a few minutes ago? He asked her what she was doing, and the warm smile came to her face when she found that he still called her Sunshine Girl. Harper didn't know why she loved that nickname so much, but it made her feel... happy. And she wasn't entirely sure that it would sound the same coming from someone else. In fact, she knew it wouldn't sound the same. It was only right when Gavin said it, but the reason for that escaped her too.
"I wasn't hungry, so I didn't go to lunch," Harper said, shrugging. She had long ago decided that lying to Gavin wasn't possible or reasonable. Might as well be honest with him. "And I was just wandering around when I heard someone singing. Turns out it was you." She grinned at him. "Maybe you should try keeping it down next time when you're... um... inspiring yourself for whatever you're painting." The grin just widened to the point where she felt like she was teasing him.
"And I don't like to think of myself as a cockroach. I'm at least a little more cute than that... like a caterpillar or a butterfly." Harper nodded resolutely as if that was a concrete answer that couldn't be argued. After all, cockroaches were gross and Harper'd had her fair share of experiences with them all over the world. Butterflies were much more beautiful, and she wasn't sure why she'd first thought of butterflies. Maybe because they flew around in her stomach every time she looked at Gavin.

enlighten me reveal my F A T E just cut these strings that hold me S A F E Her laughter only mocked him further and took a stab at his pride and dignity. At the same time it struck a cord in Gavin that made him feel pleased that he had made her laugh. Everything was so mixed up that nothing was making sense anymore. Here he was singing in public, painting a picture of the girl, and yet he was sure he hated her with every fiber of his being. Equal halves of Gavin were dueling now. He kept a scowl on his face as she continued to get amusement out of his embarrassment.
His eyes narrowed on her, “Whatever. If that’s the case then I should be able to call you Dopey. You sure remind me a hell of a lot of him.” Gavin tried to smirk smugly at her but he was afraid the smirk came off friendly rather than cruel. No matter. He refocused himself and pursed his lips slightly at stood his ground in front of the easel. He absolutely couldn’t, under any circumstance, let her see the painting.
He rolled his eyes, “So you caught me singing. It won’t happen again so you can just move along in your walk okay? Freak show is over, get out of here.” Gavin felt the anger boil in his blood again as Harper continued to talk. No single person had ever annoyed, no that word was too weak for what he was feeling, Gavin so much. Gavin’s lips tightened and thinned over his teeth until they pulled back slightly in a sneer.
“I wasn’t asking for your opinion was I?” Gavin wanted to turn his back on her but he had to make sure she didn’t get around to seeing the painting. Maybe he could convince her it was a mirror? No, that would stupid. Harper was too smart for that. He forced down a smile at her next comment. She was cuter than that. Wait, what was he thinking? Gavin cleared his throat hoping that his thoughts didn’t express themselves on his face and betray his whole façade.
He glanced down at his shirt and began to chip off some of the dried paint. Shaking his head a little to get his hair out of his eyes he looked back to Harper. He swallowed hard. Why was it so difficult being around her? She was doing this. It wasn’t Gavin at all, it had to be her fault. He wouldn’t be like this if she hadn’t entered his life.
“What now? Are you done having your fun yet? You have a way to make me look like a fool, congratulations. But honestly, I don’t care what you think or what the other in this camp have to say.” Gavin spun around and moved back to his painting. Maybe he could destroy it, paint right over the picture of Harper. He bent down and picked up the paintbrush and the palette. “You can leave now.” He muttered.

and everything that you see here is for you from mei give it away so easily----------------------------------------------------------- He was good, she had to give him that. Though, to him, all of this probably wasn't a game. It seemed like he really did hate her, and Harper desparately wanted to know why. Had she done something to truly offend him on their first meeting? Scratch that, there was probably plenty of things that she'd said that would have insulted him. What she really was wondering, was why did he always have to put up this bitter shell when she'd already seen that there was soemthing else underneath everything? Gavin was so confusing. And infuriating. And amazingly handsome. And cute in his irritability. And just... vulnerable.
Harper blinked. She had never realized just how tangled she'd let herself get over this boy. She needed to get untangled. Now. She was so used to being in control - being in charge of her own decisions and doing what she wanted when she felt like it. Anyone who knew Harper would probably call her a confident girl. Well, everything about Gavin was just throwing her off. He never did what she expected. She wondered if he would ever bare his vulnerable side to her again. She'd cherished every moment he did the last time that she'd seen it... would she ever see it again?
Then he did something that totally caught her off-guard again. Harper frowned in consideration. "I didn't think it was a freak show. It was... nice," she said. Then she added, under her breath, "For once you weren't being a complete jerk." Whether he heard what she'd said or not was his problem. She was just sick of him being nasty with her no matter what she did. Harper wanted to be his friend. Why wouldn't he let her? Was he so against having just one person be his friend?
And what the heck had he painted? Gavin sure seemed determined to protect whatever it was - or maybe it was because he didn't want her thinking of him as an actual artist, or a normal teenager, like rocking out on his supposed air guitar had. Harper paid no particular attention to it. She just wanted him to be nice... for once. "You might not have asked for it, but I gave it anyway. I didn't ask for your permission." She raised her chin, attempting to be defiant. Maybe playing hard-ball was the way to go with this kid.
But, as usual, he completely took her by surprise again with his words. Just like that, the so-called defiance left her body in an entire whoosh and she was just standing there staring at him with curious and slightly irritated chocolate brown eyes. Harper couldn't believe him. Everything in her mind was just getting mixed up because of this boy. This son of Eos. Shouldn't they be getting along at least? Their parents were both associated with the sun, so why wasn't he bright and cheerful like so many of her siblings? Why was he like this vortex of sadness and depression? She understood that he'd had a hard life. But surely it hadn't been so bad that he'd been completely broken and reassembled into this hardened man... right?
Maybe, if she was nice, he would return the favor. She doubted it, but wanted to give it a shot. "I didn't come here to make you look like a fool, Gavin," she murmured. "I was just taking a walk. I won't tell anyone about what I saw if you don't want me to - or did you think I was that shallow? That stupid?" Harper rolled her eyes - he really was overreacting about this whole thing. It was irritating. Really frustrating. But then again, wasn't everything with Gavin that way?
"And whether you like it or not, I'm staying here. You can't make me leave, and I don't want to go anywhere else." Which was somewhat of a lie - she glanced at the climbing wall as if it were about to crumble down and eat her alive. She wouldn't like spending the next few hours standing in its shadow, but she couldn't have Gavin knowing that, could she?

As much as Gavin wanted to paint over the picture of Harper he couldn’t bring himself to do so. His paintbrush was full and ready to erase what he had worked so hard on, and his first actual piece of artwork in a long time. He hardly ventured away from doodles and she was the inspiration that woke the creative side of him. His eyes stayed on the real Harper for a minute with his usual brooding expression that blocked his real emotions. Gavin let the brush hover for a minute over the painting before looking down and mixing more paint on his palette for no reason.
He froze for a second his body tensing slightly when Harper complimented his singing. A small smirk tried to betray his uncaring demeanor, but Gavin forced a scowl on his face again. He cleared his throat and glanced back up to her. He heard Harper mutter something under her breath but he didn’t fully catch it. He heard the word jerk but that was about it. For some reason he secretly found it funny. One of his eyebrows arched as she continued to be her usual stubborn self. Gavin inwardly smiled, he wouldn’t have her any other way.
“Aren’t you in a rather grumpy mood yourself today Little Miss Sunshine.” He said playfully. Gavin stopped mixing paint and walked around to the back of easel. Gavin cocked his head to the side. “You’ve had your fun, now just—“
Gavin dropped off his voice getting caught in his throat. He shook his head and waved Harper off going back to the painting. He had to stop thinking of her the way he did. He would never tell her so it was pointless to harbor these feelings for the girl. They were stupid feelings and pointless to have. Gavin never cared for anyone else but himself and he wasn’t going to let that change. He certainly wasn’t going to let a daughter of Apollo change that. This, of course, was what Gavin worked so hard on trying to convince himself.
He rolled his eyes making a face to Harper as she questioned him about her shallowness and stupidity. Gavin could have spoke up and made a jab at her about that one but he kept his mouth shut and went on stirring the paintbrush around on the palette. He shook his head his shoulders shaking for a second with a mock of laughter. His stirring slowed hearing that Harper didn’t want to go anywhere else. Gavin drew in a breath and played off the comment nonchalantly.
He stared at Harper for a moment as if considering what she had said, and he was. Gavin tried to figure out why she would want to stay around him. He had done everything in his power, beyond physical abuse, to get Harper to leave him alone. A strained smile erased the scowl. He slowly moved around to the front of the easel his eyes far away in thought. He dropped the paintbrush into a jar of dirty water and set the palette on the ground.
“Am I supposed to believe that you want to be around me? Did I miss something the last time we met?” He asked folding his arms across his chest. “I remember a few choice words from you that still don’t sit too well with me.”
Gavin stood his ground staring Harper down trying to force the other emotions down. He couldn’t let them show. He shook his head smiling slightly walking closer to Harper until he was only a foot from her. Gavin looked down at her and scoffed. “We’re playing the same game. I say stuff to hurt you, you come back at me to prove you can handle yourself and then we unload baggage on the other. Honestly Sunshine Girl, I’m getting tired of it. Like most things here, it gets old fast. So why don’t I save us the trouble and for a once in a life time opportunity you get to hear me say a group of words that don’t cross my tongue often.”
He swallowed and for a moment his eyes softened and the lines on his face gave way to a look of remorse. “I’m sorry, for kissing you and all of the things I said. And I know we’ve danced this dance before but I guess it’s worth repeating.”
He leaned back and took a few steps backward to greater the distance between the two of them. Gavin gave a crooked smile and rubbed the back of his neck. Harper was the only person to ever get in Gavin’s head like this. As much as he worked to fight it, it was difficult to do. The constant push and pull in his mind was going to drive him insane before he turned 18. He swallowed again his heart racing. Gavin watched Harper unsure of how she would react. If Gavin had known this how the day would turn out he would have stayed in bed this morning. After a minute of awkward silence Gavin gave a smug grin and shifted his weight.
“So you didn’t think my singing was that bad? I could probably kick your butt in a karaoke competition. You’re jealous.” Gavin joked with his usually cocky holier than thou attitude.
He didn’t want to make her cry again, and it was obvious that he could scold her verbally all he wanted but at the end of the day Harper would come back. While it should have been crystal clear to most what this meant, Gavin still hadn’t been able to add two and two together. Math was never his best subject in school. His hot and cold attitude was annoying even him but picking on Harper was fun. Nice picking, not cruel jabs about her father kind of picking, that didn’t turn out well last time.
The Sparknote version of Gavin’s thoughts and feelings toward Harper were this; he liked Harper being around and liked how he felt when Harper was around. Yep, insanity had taken a hold of Gavin and its name was Harper.

and everything that you see here is for you from mei give it away so easily----------------------------------------------------------- Was abolutely everything about this boy infuriating in every way, shape, and form? Harper felt as though she were on a roller coaster. Every word he said either sent butterflies through her stomach or a fiery something that frustrated her. There were highs and lows, twists and turns that she didn't expect, or couldn't see coming. Being around him was exhilirating and annoying at the same time. For a brief moment, Harper allowed herself to wonder whether Gavin felt the same way, or whether he was just annoyed to be around her. She scrutinized his face, but couldn't see anything hinting at the former. All she could see was that brooding shell he put on. His eyes were too far away for her to see much of them.
So Harper decided to fix that. She approached him, coming closer to both him and the easel with an appraising look in her eyes. He was so hard to figure out that she just wanted to get a good look at him. Her mother had once said that if she could get a good look into someone else's eyes, Harper could tell so much about a person. The last time they'd met, she knew she'd seen something in him that was different from this uncaring front he put on. There was a good man underneath all of this, and maybe that was why Harper was so addicted to his presence. She wanted to unlock his mysteries, because having lived in the Apollo cabin for so long, she was used to people being open. Gavin was a novelty. Something new. Almost refreshing.
Or maybe that was her head talking. The pounding in her heart was telling her something different. Harper still wasn't entirely sure what it was, because before she was sure it had been because she was dancing and walking around camp. But now, having stood reasonably still for the past few minutes, she didn't have that excuse. So why did her heart feel like it was about to explode into a thousand pieces in Gavin's presence? It felt like it was pumping ten times faster, and the emotions that were rushing around through her were addicting and new at the same time. Was this healthy? Harper wasn't entirely sure.
"If I told you why I wanted to be around you, you wouldn't believe me anyway. You're not very good at that," Harper pointed out, but then realized that being honest with him might get her into more trouble than she already was. She didn't want him to know that she saw something more in him than what was obvious on the surface. "And if I said something that really hurt your feelings, I'm sorry. I mean it too. I think we both said some things that hurt each other, and I know that I'm sorry for my part. I can't speak for you, because honestly I don't know if you're all that sorry or not..." Her voice trailed off as he continued talking, and did something else that blew her right off track.
Gavin Sawyer apologized to her. A full, blown-out apology. But as he spoke, it got Harper thinking. So she looked at him with a contemplative expression and felt that fluttering in her stomach again that was accompanied by that funny feeling in her chest area again. She was sure that she'd caught a glimpse of the man Gavin really was again. But when he said he was getting tired of the game they were playing, that got Harper thinking even more. What was he saying? That he didn't want to be around her anymore? Because she felt as though that when they were around each other, they ended up playing this game no matter what. Or was he saying that he might actually want to be friends?
Damn, every time he said something he confused Harper even further. She decided to clear some of the confusion before she went insane. "What are you saying?" she asked as he approached her. Harper tried to keep the anxiety from her voice. The thought of not being around Gavin was almost impossible to comprehend. Another one of the many infuriating things about him. "If you're tired of playing this game, then what will we do? Have rational conversations?" The sarcasm practically dripped from her voice - Harper honestly wasn't sure if Gavin was capable of having a rational conversation with anyone, let alone her. She never saw him at any of the social camp events, like the bonfires at night or any parties that anybody threw. In fact, the first time she'd met him had been the first time she'd ever even seen him.
But then when he spoke again, he was joking around. Harper's eyes lit up. She enjoyed this kind of teasing - it was the kind of joking around that she was used to. It wasn't the cruel, angry comments that he'd made back the last time they'd met, but rather something genuinely light. But whether or not it was meant to make her laugh, she laughed anyway. She was partially relieved that he was being so casual about the insult, considering as how mean he could be... and she wasn't even sure if he meant to insult her. If that was his intention, it hadn't worked. Harper's attitude was beginning to look up.
A cheerful grin appeared on her face as she regarded Gavin in a new light. She looked up at him, the grin turning into a teasing smirk as she shoved him gently in a playful manner. "Jealous, of you? Please. I could outsing you without even trying. All because I think your singing wasn't bad doesn't mean I think it's good. It's you who should be jealous of me." The playful wink she flashed up at him was enough proof that she was playing around.

enlighten me reveal my F A T E just cut these strings that hold me S A F E Gavin swallowed hard, his throat was suddenly dry and scratchy. It made him cough involuntarily. He cleared his throat and tried not to look to nervous by what Harper had just said. He wanted to know the reason she wanted to be around him more than anything. And the way she worded it, maybe just maybe…Gavin shook his head slightly. No, it couldn’t be. His palms began to feel sweaty as Harper apologized for the things she had said before. This constant feeling of anxiousness and the pangs in his chest were getting too much to handle.
He rolled his eyes at her but then his brow furrowed. What was he saying? Gavin folded his arms across his chest again. “We just keep playing the insult game and it obviously isn’t getting us anywhere. I’ve never met a girl so hard to get rid of. Insulting clearly doesn’t work and I doubt kindness would have the affect I desire. So I think we’re at an impasse for now.” He lowered his shoulders and smiled. “Rational conversations aren’t really my thing. Too boring.”
Gavin allowed a genuine smile stretch his lips as he saw something change in Harper’s eyes. He was letting his guard down around her yet again and showing a more vulnerable side of himself. There wasn’t anyone else around to witness the phenomenon so it would just be their little secret. Truth was, and he had thought this a number of times before, Gavin liked how he felt around Harper. He didn’t want this feeling to go away the more he felt it.
A touch was worth a thousand words. Okay, so that wasn’t the saying but at the moment Harper shoved Gavin lightly Gavin was able to think of a thousand words to describe the feeling. He smiled and raised an eyebrow at her. Gavin’s head tilted back and let out a happy laugh. Was he even capable of happy laughter?
“That’ll be the day. When I am jealous of Harper, Daughter of Apollo.” He joked.
The next few seconds Gavin didn’t even have to think about they just came naturally. He didn’t shove her back. Instead he reached around to the paint easel and ran his finger over one of the open tubes of paint. With a small dot of yellow paint on his fingertip he looked back to Harper mischievously. He approached her slowly and dragged his finger across her cheek leaving a yellow mark of paint. With what was left on his finger he dotted the tip of her nose.
“There. Now you really are Sunshine Girl.” Gavin’s eyes lit up playfully. He was standing only inches form her now. At that moment standing there looking into her eyes Gavin decided he wasn’t going to fight it any longer. He swallowed. After a moments hesitation he leaned in a little. This was it now or never. If he shut off the way he felt for Harper and tried to push her away again Gavin wasn’t sure if he could forgive himself. It was a win lose situation. He could tell Harper to bugger off, but knowing her she wouldn’t take the hint. And if she wasn’t going to take the hint then maybe there was a hint there that she liked him. Too many hints to think about. Gavin would just go on what his gut was telling him to do right now. Probably not the best decision.
“I’m going to kiss you now.” He must have sounded so stupid, but he was sure of himself. “I know you didn’t like the way I did it before, so I thought I would warn you this time. Feel free to back away.” Gavin would wait only a few seconds before leaning in fully and finishing what he said he was going to do.

and everything that you see here is for you from mei give it away so easily----------------------------------------------------------- While she waited for his response, Harper had come to a conclusion. She would not wish this insanity on anyone - female nor male nor demi-god nor mortal. Because even though it brought with it a pounding heartbeat and the feeling like she as flying with every step she took and every word she heard, it was addicting, frustrating, and was driving her completely nuts. It made her feel like nothing was sane anymore - she simply couldn't look at the world in the same way anymore. Gavin had changed absolutely everything, and the changes ranged from absolutely wonderful to completely horrible.
And he was only confusing her further and it was driving her insane. "Yeah. I've noticed," Harper muttered in response to his comment about rational conversations. Even though she'd really only spoken to him twice, for some reason she could already tell that just having a normal conversation was outside his limits. Well, maybe not outside his limits... it just seemed to Harper that it was probably because he hadn't had a rational conversation in so long that he'd become accustomed to the fighting and the insults. Actually, she really didn't know if this was the case, but Harper wasn't about to try and argue with him. Like he'd said, she had grown tired of that game too.
When Gavin laughed - really, really laughed - Harper decided that she really enjoyed the sound. She wanted to hear it more often, and more than anything she felt a little pride that it had been her to make him laugh. It was one of the first genuinely good things she had seen from him, and she was glad that she, and nobody else, was here to see it. Where those thoughts had come from, she honestly had no idea. But there was just something about his laugh that was contagious, and she couldn't help but laugh in return.
She was laughing so much she didn't notice what he was doing with his paint until she felt his fingers brush across her cheek and then her nose. Harper felt the coldness of paint touch her skin, but it was the feeling of his hands on her face that sent a pleasant shiver down her spine. The instant he finished she reached up to touch her cheek to try and wipe the paint off, but of course she only succeeded in smearing it further and getting the yellow paint all over her fingers. "Oh, you are so going to get it," she said with a playful grin. "You're lucky there's no color for grumpy, because I would splatter it all over you!"
She would have said more, but when she looked up, the words died on her tongue as she gazed up at him. He was so close... had they been that close a few seconds ago? Had his eyes always been so... deep? And had he always looked so kissable? Harper took a sharp intake of breath, her eyes wide as she looked up at him. Without realizing it, she took her bottom lip in between her teeth and bit down on it, desparately trying to keep herself from leaning in and kissing him right there. She honestly didn't know where all of this was coming from - just days ago she despised him for kissing her. But now, that's all she wanted to do.
Then he said he was going to kiss her. For a split second that felt like eons, Harper wondered if their minds were operating on the same wave at the moment. It didn't even cross her mind to back away. For those few seconds of pause, there was absolutely no hesitation in her eyes and all she could think about was if it was going to feel just as amazing as last time. The only response Harper could manage was, "Okay." But as soon as she let go of her bottom lip, she felt her control slipping.
Within a second, all of her control had shattered completely. Harper leaned into him, crushing her lips to his and winding her hands up into his hair. And her decision was yes, it was just as good as last time. In fact, it was even better.

Gavin swallowed he was fully prepared to receive a slap across the cheek. He readied himself for the blow but it never came. If she weren’t going to hit him then she would back away and think of him as a freak. Their first kiss didn’t go over too well there was no reason for this attempt to go smoothly. He waited wondering if he should be the one to back up. Maybe he could pretend that this never happened. Gavin could act like this entire mistake never transpired.
Harper’s ‘Okay’ shook Gavin back to reality. He had been about to step away when Harper did the least expected thing. She agreed to him kissing her. Gavin blinked and was unable to move from that point. Thankfully he didn’t have to do a thing. Harper moved in to close the distance and before Gavin could take a breath her lips was pressed hard against his. Gavin shut his eyes and gave into the moment. His hands reached up and cupped around her face slowly moving back through her long hair.
It was official. A kiss that was reciprocated was a while pants load better than a stolen one. The stolen kiss had the surprise and excitement, but this one where they both played a part was so much more enjoyable. Gavin forgot about hating Harper and about his self-promise never to let anyone close to him. He dropped everything he believed in and just allowed himself to be in the moment of the kiss. Nothing mattered in that minute. And it had been a minute of nonstop kissing. Gavin knew because he secretly counted.
Gavin pulled away and took a deep breath. He found it painfully hard to look Harper in the eye after the kiss. He swallowed hard missing her hands running through his hair. Gavin shut his eyes tight and in usual Gavin style forced the feelings he was having for Harper down beneath the surface again. He licked his lips and opened his eyes again glancing up slowly to Harper. Did he just cross a line he couldn’t go back from? People who hated or disliked each other didn’t kiss and they certainly didn’t kiss like that.
“This doesn’t change anything.” Gavin finally said. “I still find you annoying as ever.”
And it was the truth. Harper was still the most annoying girl he had ever met. But it was also the truth that he enjoyed her company and very much enjoyed the kiss. Gavin sighed; Harper was the most complicated thing in his life. He stared at her and the smudges of yellow paint on her face. Gavin was finding it harder to keep a straight uncaring face around her.
“You look ridiculous.” He muttered grabbing the paint covered washcloth. Gavin sauntered back over to Harper. He reached up as if he were going to wipe the paint away himself but he stopped. Instead he held the cloth out for Harper to take. “Here. By the way, the color for grumpy would be grey. At least, that’s my opinion.”
Gavin was doing his best not to talk about the kiss. He couldn’t act like it never happened because a kiss like that had to exist. He liked thinking that it had happened. The thing was, Gavin wasn’t going to describe in detail why he had done it or what he felt. Clearing his throat Gavin moved back to his painting. Dare he show her what he had been working so hard on?
Secretly feeling like he had never before Gavin picked up his paintbrush and dabbed it in the paint. He glanced over at Harper studying her for a moment before turning his attention to the painting. The eyes were off in color slightly. They were brighter right now. Gavin found himself humming again, he glanced at Harper periodically as he went to work.
“It’s time to bring this ship into the shore and throw away the oars forever. I can’t fight this feeling anymore.” Gavin sang softly smiling at Harper.

and everything that you see here is for you from mei give it away so easily----------------------------------------------------------- While Gavin was counting up the seconds they were kissing, Harper was simply wishing that it would never end. Everything about it was general bliss - never before had she seen this from Gavin. Their first kiss had been a surprise - a partially unwelcome one at that. But this one… while it wasn’t planned, it certainly wasn’t a bad one at that. As Gavin’s hands cupped her face and went through her hair, butterflies flittered throughout Harper’s stomach as she realized that she actually felt wanted. She felt… as though Gavin actually thought of her as something more than the annoying little Sunshine Girl. It made her feel warm and comforted.
And when he finally pulled away, and she pulled her hands from his hair, she kept her eyes closed to try and remember what it all felt like. She committed it to memory as best she could. But she was pretty sure that some of it was already unforgettable. Like the feeling of Gavin’s lips against hers, or the feeling of his hands on her face and in her hair. Everything just generally felt like heaven.
But when Harper opened her eyes to look up at him, she found that he was avoiding her gaze. Panic leapt to her throat. Had she done something wrong? Had her kiss been unsatisfactory? She couldn’t think of anything on her end that had made the kiss bad. While Harper hated these insecure thoughts, there was no questioning that they were now jumping around her mind like uncontrolled children. Her head was buzzing and her heart was thumping - that was pretty much all she knew. Despite the worrisome thoughts running amuck in her head, she found that this was probably one of the highs of the emotional roller coaster that Gavin had her on.
However, in typical Gavin nature, it took a twisting nosedive. Harper felt a bubble of anger form in the pit of her stomach as he spoke, telling her that she was still the most annoying girl in the world. Granted, her ego took a solid hit, but Harper certainly wasn’t going to let him see that. She’d let him take complete control of her for just a minute, and he threw it back in her face like she’d done nothing at all. She huffed and glared at him. ”Well, you’re still the most infuriating boy I’ve ever met,” she shot right back.
As she stood there and watched him fetch the washcloth for her face, she forced herself to calm down. She couldn’t let him make her angry again. Harper was determined to make herself his friend, and getting angry at him certainly wasn’t going to help the cuase. But as he handed her the washcloth, she couldn’t help but mutter, ”Well, it’s not my fault - you’re the one who made me look ridiculous in the first place.” Carefully, making sure that she didn’t smudge more paint on her face, she wiped away the yellow smudges on her nose and cheek and listened as Gavin began singing again.
She approached Gavin with the washcloth, a mischievous look in her chocolate brown eyes again as she got closer. ”You know, I meant it when I said you’re singing isn’t that bad,” she mused. Harper came around the easel under the “pretense” that she would hand Gavin back his washcloth. But instead, she reached even further and dabbed his cheek with a portion of the cloth that she thought had a smudge of dark gray paint on it. She grinned and plopped the rag back on the easel, still having not seen the picture. ”Now who looks ridiculous?” she asked, the same grin there.
That was when Harper spotted the picture. Her entire body froze for a split second - half leaned over Gavin and half towards the easel. Her eyes widened as she took in the painting. It was a life-like watercolor painting of… well, her. And it was damn good too. But this only added confusion to Harper’s already addled brain. ”That’s really nice, but, um… why… why is it of me?” she questioned. ”Are you like… a stalker or something?” Harper let out a laugh, but the laugh was a nervous, anxious one. And just about anyone who knew her well enough could tell that.

Gavin was still feeling the affects of his lips on Harpers. His mind was fighting a battle between giving into the feelings fully and shutting himself off to caring. How anyone person could feel that at the same time and not explode was lost on him. He tried not to think about it that way. He kept his focus on the picture and getting the smile just right. Gavin shook his head slightly at Harper even when she said he was infuriating. Those words didn’t bother him anymore. He loved the dislike between them. The friction was something Gavin kind of longed for. He wasn’t sure if he would have it any other way.
“Aw, I’m touched.” Gavin said with a little bit mock enthusiasm. He even placed his hand over his heart before returning to his painting. He was kind of touched by the compliment. Gavin had never sung in front of anyone willingly, or at all. Feedback was nice to hear especially from a daughter of Apollo. “Thank you Sunshine Girl.” he continued jokingly. His tone was more playful than cruel. It was a nice change up. “I’m gonna go write in my journal tonight, ‘Harper said I was a good singer. Best day ever.’” He chuckled darkly and dragged the brush across the canvas.
When Harper managed to smear some gray paint on his face Gavin had to work hard at keeping a scowl there. He scoffed and shoved her hand away holding the loaded paintbrush out in front of him as a weapon. Gavin leaned back, “For your information gray happens to be my color. Also, I’m painting which means if I don’t get paint on me at some point I’m not doing this thing correctly.” He gave a crooked smirk and lowered the brush.
He mixed a few colors on the palette and went to add the finishing touches on Harper’s smile. It was almost ruined as Harper leaned over in front of him. His stomach flipped over and his hands became clammy. For some unexplained reason Gavin had forgotten about Harper actually seeing the painting. He tensed up and backed away a few steps mindlessly mixing colors now. He swallowed hard to clear the lump from his throat. Gavin chewed his lower lip and kept a nonchalant expression on his face despite how nervous he was.
He couldn’t help but dramatically roll his eyes at the stalker comment. “No.” he exclaimed. “And if I were stalking someone it would be someone that didn’t get on my nerves so much.” Gavin looked up at Harper. He didn’t say anything else for a few seconds still trying to put together words in his head to explain the painting. He coughed, clearing his throat. “It’s only of you because, and don’t read too much into this, it was the only thing I could think off when I began painting.”
Gavin walked over and lifted the easel and turned it away from Harper. “If you’re gonna laugh at it I can always paint over it.” He muttered grumpily.
Words couldn’t explain how foolish Gavin felt right now. He had entertained the thought about telling Harper the truth about why he was painting and to further explain the reason for the kiss, but after the whole “stalker” thing Gavin dropped it. She would just laugh at him or think of him as a super mega demi-god creep. The scowl didn’t take long to find its way back to Gavin’s face. He wasn’t sure if he felt up to finishing the painting right now. If he continued on Gavin was afraid he would intentionally ruin it, and he didn’t want that.
But she didn’t refuse to kiss him this time and that had to mean something? Gavin couldn’t get that memory out of his mind. Like someone trying to hold onto a blissful dream after first waking up, Gavin tried to hold onto that feeling and that passion when the two of them kissed. When Gavin looked up again at Harper his expression did not soften but there was something in his eyes, a tortured glance. Harper was the exception to the rules and morals he made for himself. Rule number one was never let anybody in; you’ll only get hurt. They will only abandon you and you’ll be alone. Gavin licked his lips and set his paintbrush and palette down.
Gavin could either live with regret and shove Harper away now and tell her to get loss, only further damaging the self-esteem he was playing with. He could be that asshole and tell her that the kiss meant nothing and receive another well-deserved slap. He could live by his rule and never show anyone his feelings other than what he often showed on the outside. Stay alone forever only relaying on him never to let anybody close. Gavin already felt himself forgetting what it was like to kiss Harper to be that close to her. Pride was one thing, but it would be his downfall. Gavin’s brow furrowed as he contemplated everything all at once.
On the other hand, Gavin could give in and shove that voice away forever and confess everything to Harper. He would risk looking like a fool but there was the off chance that she felt the same way. Besides, was regret for something he never had a chance to do worse than knowing the truth? At least he would not remain wondering what could have been if he had told her. He would know. Gavin took a few ridged steps closer to Harper. There was pain in his eyes as he still worked everything out in his head.
He had no idea it was so hard to say three little words, I like you. How effin difficult was that to verbalize? Then again he had kissed Harper, twice now, and unless the guy was sick in the head no one would do that unless they liked that person. Gavin’s breath caught in his throat. He took another ridged step. How could he explain to her? He could kiss her again, but that didn’t really get them anywhere. It felt good, but little progress. Gavin scolded himself silently, Get a grip. She’s just a chick. Stop being such a puss. Say something, anything. You can’t keep staring at her like you’ve just been kicked in the jewels. She’ll walk away for sure!
Where had that voice been all this time? The voice that told him to stay silent was itself oddly quiet. He nodded sternly and reached out for Harper’s hand. Slowly he took her hands and stared down at her hands in his. His mouth was suddenly dry. His tongue felt heavy like dead weight in his mouth.
“Harper,” He began beyond the scratchy feeling in his mouth as his tongue moved across the roof of his mouth. He swallowed hoping saliva would result, but it only made things worse. “I’m not good at this kind of thing, at all. No experience what so ever, and I feel like a complete idiot for the record. And I’m probably rambling so feel free to tell me to shut up.” He paused. “Actually, no don’t tell me to shut up cause I really to get this out there.”
Gavin took a deep breath before taking the plunge. “There is a reason I’m painting a picture of you, why I was singing the song I was, and why I’ve kissed you…twice now…and I was hoping I wouldn’t have to come out and say it.” He exhaled through his nose and gradually Gavin’s eyes found their way up to Harper’s face. “I’ve thought about it. And I mean thought about it, tried not to think about it and looked at it all from every single fucking angle I could. And I came to one conclusion; you’re the one person I wouldn’t mind letting in. I’ve spent my entire life hiding behind a solid iron wall of spite and grumpiness.” He scoffed a little when he said that, thinking of Harper and how she liked to describe his personality as grumpy. “In one afternoon you managed to find the chink in that wall and tear it down. It was like the Berlin Wall part two. And while you annoy the Hades out of me I realized it was because you are the only girl I’ve ever let in, in anyway and the only girl to ever make me doubt myself.”
Gavin sighed. It felt sort of all right to get everything off his chest and out of his mind. But it was scary at the same time. There was so much floating around in there that he wasn’t quite done and Gavin wasn’t sure how to wrap everything up to a conclusion. A simple ‘I like you’ wouldn’t suffice. He hadn’t known Harper for an extended period of time but Gavin fell head over heels, and he fell hard.
He swallowed and continued. “I know I’m just unloading like a dump truck of information and I suppose it’s totally cool…okay that is a lie. It’s not totally cool if you don’t feel the same way back. I mean if you didn’t then you wouldn’t have kissed me like that and I wouldn’t bother you so much right? Or am I just completely delusional?” He stopped. Talking too much. Gavin wasn’t sure if he had ever said so much at one time ever in his life. “See what you do to me? I can’t shut my mouth for one second.” He had almost forgotten he was holding onto his hands. Gavin rubbed his thumb across the back of her hands. “So, I guess the point I’m trying to make is that in layman’s terms, I like you. And in seventh grade terms, I like you like you.“
Gavin sucked in a deep breath of air and held it for a moment. He watched Harper eagerly and nervously for her reaction for this weight he now rested on her shoulders and conscious. It was a lot to take in. Hell, Gavin was still getting use to all of this information. His brain was still working on coming to terms and processing all of it. He squeezed her hands a little. Forget every monster he had faced in his life, this was the scariest moment in the history of ever. Gavin had never felt so vulnerable in his life. Gavin could feel his heart pick up in anticipation. Tears of anger and pain pushed on the backs of his eyes ready to be released should Gavin hear something other than what his heart wanted.

and everything that you see here is for you from mei give it away so easily----------------------------------------------------------- In Harper’s mind, there was another type of war going on. Quite honestly, she wasn’t sure if she should run or stay and give Gavin a chance to explain. Never before had she seen a painting of her (such an accurate and well-drawn one, she silently added) done before. She didn’t know if it frightened her or flattered her. Either way, it made her nervous. But the source of the anxiety was unknown, and when it became known it would be the determining factor on whether she would stay or flee.
Because really, she didn’t want to leave Gavin. Even though she was pretty sure it wasn’t healthy, Harper felt addicted to their meetings and their constant bickering. As she’d thought a million times over, it was a refreshing douse from the world around her. The Apollo cabin was so bright and cheerful all the time. To find someone that she was friends with that didn’t see the world in positive terms was a rare occurrence indeed. Or to find anyone at camp, really, who hated the world as much as Gavin seemed to. It made him a novelty to her - a novelty she couldn’t seem to wrench herself away from.
It was these thoughts that kept her rooted to her spot, but when Gavin’s voice reached her ears again, Harper looked up at him nervously and gave him a shaky smile. ”You should. Don’t get used to the compliments, because I only reserve them for special days,” she managed to say in response, keeping a joking tone. But behind it was a sense of fear - she didn’t understand Gavin or why he’d painted a picture of her. That fear is probably what prevented her from making a witty comment in response to his remark about the paint or the color gray. Instead her eyes remained fixated on the painting, still not sure what to make of it. Was the work of a stalker or the work of… no. She couldn’t consider that, because it would only get her hopes up.
There was no stopping the breath of relief that escaped her when he exclaimed that it wasn’t because he was a stalker, and that it was only because she was the only thing he could think of for inspiration. Despite what he warned her, about not reading too much into it, Harper couldn’t help but wonder and hope (just a little bit) that maybe it was because of something more. But nothing she could see in Gavin’s face was giving her any hints… but then again, she knew just from their past meeting that it was practically impossible to read anything into Gavin’s expressions.
”No! No, don’t paint over it!” Harper exclaimed in surprise, but then clapped her hands over her mouth, realizing what she’d just said. ”I’m not laughing, I swear. I just… I was just surprised, that’s all. Don’t erase all that good work on my account. And I’m not just saying that because it’s a picture of me.” Because she’d seen her fellow Apollo campers get rid of such good work all because of something silly. She didn’t want that to happen to Gavin. Or the beautiful painting, regardless of whether it was of her or not.
Harper was so caught up in all of this that she hardly even noticed him approaching her. She honestly felt like pulling her hair out of its roots, she was so confused by all of this. Gavin was putting her on a new level of insane that hadn’t even been discovered yet, but at the same time it was all so addicting. Like the adrenaline she received on a roller coaster on that first hill. When you were taking the plunge straight down towards the ground. That was the way it felt every time she was near Gavin. Every time he managed to throw her for a loop, and right now she was on the biggest one he’d ever thrown her on. Of course, she had absolutely no idea how big that loop was going to get, because she hardly registered the fact that Gavin was suddenly coming towards her.
But suddenly, her hands were in his. Red blossomed like a rose across her cheeks, and Harper marveled just how right it felt. His hands were larger and rougher, yes, but she knew it was a sign of his hardened life before he’d come to Camp Half-Blood. For an instant, she felt so guilty that she’d had it easy. Her mother had moved her around and about the world before any monsters could make her life hell. And here was Gavin, the product of such the cruel world she’d been protected from for all these years. And then his hands just made him all the more alluring. How frustrating this was all turning out to be!
As soon as Gavin began speaking, Harper’s eyes snapped to his face. Her chocolate brown orbs searched his blue-gray ones, desperately trying to find something that would help her figure him out. But, as usual, she found nothing. How could he do it? Harper completely sucked at hiding her true emotions - she couldn’t lie worth a crap. But, doing as Gavin instructed, she kept quiet and let him get out what he needed to.
His words only drove Harper further insane, because there was no possible way they could be true. How was it possible that their minds were so in sync but so different at the same time? Because these thoughts were Harper’s thoughts. His feelings seemed to mirror hers in ways that she couldn’t even imagine before. Of course, she had no armor, no wall. She had nothing to hide, or nothing that she felt like she had to hide. Her vulnerability was always right out there for everyone to see. So were her feelings, her attitudes, her opinions. But this… this was just unbelievable. It made her feel special, almost, because that was the way Gavin was making it sound. And it was making her heart thump incessantly and she couldn’t take her eyes off him or bring herself to tell him to stop before he wound her in too tight.
It was too late. She was already wound in, enchanted by his spell. As Harper listened to him speak, it slowly cleared away all doubt from her mind. There was no way she could escape the entanglement he’d placed on her heart and on her mind… and her entire being, really. As his thumbs rubbed across her skin, Harper’s eyes flickered down to them for an instant. She let out a deep breath as she once again basked in the rightness of how it felt, how nice it felt to have her hands held in such a fashion. Never before had she ever been held so tenderly, and it was just her hands he was holding.
When he’d finished, Harper’s eyes flickered up back to his, and she bit her lip for a moment before coming up with an answer.
”Honestly? I’ve never met a guy more frustrating then you, Gavin Sawyer,” she began, swallowing. She found that her voice had practically disappeared too. ”But I’ve never been fascinated by anyone else as much as I’ve been fascinated by you. You’re so different from everyone I’ve met here, and I can’t help but wonder it… I don’t know. The thing is, I don’t know what you’re asking of me. If you’re asking me to be something more for you or not. Because… because to be honest? There’s nothing I would love more than to be something for you. To be the person to show there’s something in this world worth fighting for.”
Harper took a deep breath. How was she meant to continue? She squeezed Gavin’s hands in return and let out that same deep breath shakily. She felt like his hands were her only anchors to earth right now, so for the next portion of her speech she concentrated on their hands. ”I mean, this is all so sudden. I thought… I thought you hated me. With a passion. I thought that was why you were so bitter and angry towards me, but for some reason despite all the crap you say… I still want to come back for more. Like I want to set myself up for punishment and getting hurt. But there’s something about you that I can’t explain.”
This was when her eyes went back up to meet his. ”I like kissing you. It feels nice - better than nice, actually. It feels like there’s actually someone in that shell of yours that cares about me. And that’s that makes me come back for more, I think. Because, like you said, I think I like you, like you.” It was definitely official. Gavin Sawyer had driven Harper Marowski insane.

The anticipation was killing Gavin. It cut into his heart like a red-hot dagger. He only wanted to hear one answer from Harper and he was seriously starting to doubt whether or not he would hear it. He tried to prepare himself for the inevitable let down and denial. Gavin had been so cruel to Harper there was absolutely positively no way in Olympus she would ever return such feelings in a million years. Zeus had a better chance of saying, ‘Hey, brothers why don’t one of you two take the reins for a while. I’m going on vacation. Be back never!’
Gavin’s eyes searched Harper’s face for every tiny detail and hint of what she might be feeling. The dagger in his heart plunged deeper as she referred to him as frustrating. This was the lead up to the let down. Gavin should have known better than to open himself up and expose such vulnerability to her. It was the way to get hurt. Letting people in only set you up for heartbreak. He had told himself this day in and day out since he was little. Why would now be any different? He wouldn’t show the disappointment on his face though; Gavin would manage the perfect poker face. He swallowed and tried to relax as it was Harper’s turn to speak.
His expression was set hard and ready for a cold response he would follow up her denial with. Out of the blue though the lead up boiled down to a key phrase, “I would love nothing more than to be something for you.” Gavin’s brow scrunched slightly for a second before it relaxed and a complete and utter look of shock took over his face. The pain in his heart lifted and in its place there was helium giving him that lighter than air feeling. Gavin’s mouth hung open slightly. Well, it looked like Poseidon and Hades would get a chance to rock the crown of ruling Olympus. He prayed to the Gods that his mind wasn’t playing tricks on him; he prayed that he had heard Harper correctly. He hadn’t been aware that he was holding in a breath until his lungs felt white-hot. Gavin exhaled and took a few moments to process what had just occurred.
The pressure from Harper’s hands on his assured Gavin that he would not float away to the atmosphere, she was keeping him grounded. Guilt swam through his veins at the subject of Gavin hating Harper. At first he did, oh so very much he hated this daughter of Apollo. Up until a few minutes ago he still hated Harper. Hate and love must have shared the same company inside of him. It was hard to tell the difference between the two. But as Harper confessed she liked kissing him Gavin couldn’t help but smile broadly. There was a distinction between love and hate, and what he felt for Harper at that very moment she said, “I think I like you, like you.” wasn’t anything negative. Gavin drew the line and believed to forever step on the side that wasn’t filled with insults, scowls, and ill will toward Harper.
Gavin exhaled sharply and closed his eyes for a second trying to collect his thoughts together as a whole. His mind was soaring in every direction and on every topic relating to Harper Marowski. His hands began to sweat and he became increasingly embarrassed by this fact. Gavin’s voice caught in his throat at first.
“Well.” He began, “I’m glad we’re on the same page at least.”
Gavin let out a distained laugh, “And I’m not sure if I should be offended or not about the shell comment or not but I’ll let it slide because I obviously have a soft spot for you.”
For a minute Gavin didn’t say or do anything except pull Harper closer to him and gaze down at her. He wanted to soak in everything about this moment. It was strange there was something inside of Gavin he hadn’t felt before this moment. At first it was uncomfortable but as he gave into the feeling and emotion it became quite welcome. A knowing smile thinned Gavin’s lips and he chuckled a little. The sound was light and almost carefree as if there was no burden on Gavin’s shoulder. Normally there was heaviness behind his words and even in the air he breathed, but this chuckle was not like the rest.
“Is this what it’s like?” Gavin asked in all seriousness. “Caring for someone else?” In excitement of this new lightness Gavin backed off from Harper beaming ear to ear. He laughed another unburdened laugh. “It’s like I’m free falling from thousands of miles in the sky.” Gavin talked with his hands making gestures and bouncing almost like a little kid. “And it’s like, I don’t have to worry about crashing because I know that when I do there’s gonna be someone there to catch me. It’s exhilarating!” The sound that came out of his mouth next was a mixture between a chuckle and a squeak. His eyes grew wide and Gavin quickly covered his mouth. What the hell was that? He cleared his throat and put on his best serious expression trying to go back to brooding.
“I mean. I’m glad you like me. Who wouldn’t, I’m a likeable guy.” His smile quivered as Gavin attempted to salvage some of his pride and dignity. Gavin folded his arms across his chest and tried to keep a grin from his face. It was getting painful to do so. Whenever he looked at Harper he couldn’t help but want to smile. She made him feel like a whole new person and while it was strange and foreign at first, Gavin was growing to like it. So long as he wasn’t seen acting like this around other people.
